Hello and welcome, I’m Carl the landscape guy and today I’m building a natural looking garden stream for a customer and I will show you every step in detail. I am really looking forward to this project and I think that it is very possible to replicate it with the help of this video. Thank you to all my viewers for the many likes, comments and subscriptions lately, that helps a lot and enables me to produce new videos for you. Today we are in a fairly small yard and therefore I have planned a 3 meter long stream. The size of the stream can be easily changed depending on how much space you have for the construction. First I cut a square that’s about 70 by 70 centimeters and then remove the turf. Then I dig the square out to about 70 centimeters deep. I am reusing the soil to make a small hill for our stream, because we’ll need a slope for proper water flow. It is important to well-compact the soil layer by layer from the beginning by treading on it, so the stream won’t sag later. By the way, you can find my tools and equipment in the description section, so please use the links to order what you need. I'm creating a slight slope around the edges here now. I form the hill a little elongated, which will fit the stream better. Now the ground is getting sandier, but that's good because sand can be compacted better. Right away I remove things like garbage, stones or even broken glass like this here; because we do not want to risk damaging the pond liner later on. Now I add a few wheelbarrows of soil, which is available to me on this construction site. This makes our hill a bit larger, but it is not entirely necessary. Maybe you have some soil or sand lying around that you can use. Or you might already have a natural slope in the garden, where the stream can be built in nicely. You can see here that I have already decreased the slope going towards the hole. And I use this tamper to compact the soil one more time. Now you’ve probably already asked yourself, what goes into the hole. And I’m going to get that ready right now. It is a percolation cube or also called a aqua block, which needs to be assembled. But assembling it is very fast and easy with these little pins. One side will remain open for now and you’ll find out why a little later. The percolation cube should be installed level, so I use a spirit level to pull the soil flat. The cube size is 60 by 60 by 60 centimeters and the hole is about 70 centimeters deep, so that the cube will sit a little lower in the hole. This way the water will run in better and it is easier to cover with rocks later. Next I lay out a thick protective fabric, that weighs 300 grams per square meter. After that comes the pond liner. Both the fabric and the liner are 2 meters wide by 5 meters long. And it just fits with the 60 centimeter cube. I also wrapped the cube in fabric, so it can't damage the liner. Now we move on to the streambed. I form the lowest dam with the help of a garden curbstone.

I'm jealous of your dirt. That first square hole would take 10 hours here.
if your soil is dead (like rock hard clay, or sand) you should add organic materials like compost and mix it in. Water it often. you can buy and add earthworms when the soil is ready for aeration and to improve its fertility as well.
I was thinking the same thing! Where I live in NC, we have that red clay and there can be some rocks mixed in, too. It’s a pain in the butt, so I always try to water it down before digging. However, if my dirt were like that in the video, I’d never complain. 😂
@@vossejongk why would you want to improve the soil when you want to dig it out
My dirt is clay and rocks so it is such a pain to dig especially when your digging a koi pond
@@lumpkanella69 Same here, and on top of that the previous owners of my house decided to put rubble into the ground when they broke down a small garden house right where my pond sits 🤦🏻
Camera angle and movement was making me nauseous
It’s a bad idea to put camera on your head, it made me feel very dizzy
I love your videos! You have to be the most patient man on the planet! All that work you do by hand and by yourself... Rare quality these days!!!
your hired, so you travel?lol
good listening... don"T forget me to goes duit and goes natural support good luck always thank you very much
I’m very selective to who I subscribe, you sir were the easiest choice:
Great craftsmanship
Calmed voice
Detailed work
Great creativity
Hard working
Hats off to you
Are you seriously thinking this looks good
it amazes me seeing the soil in other places. I live in Phoenix AZ and when you dig in my backyard its nothing but desert dirt and round rocks. then you get to a certain depth and its all clay. we don't have rich soil out here, its all dead, brown and dry.
interesting thanks 👍
HA yeah was thinking the same thing. Here in Missouri we get maybe two inches of top soil then it's all clay. I can't even imagine digging so easily like this.
The process of this backyard transformation is beautiful to watch. I love your work.
thanks alot 🤗👋
What a great video, it is really helpful as I am just about to build a waterfall and pond in my back garden and needed a little bit of insight.
Great idea with the landscape foam!! 👍😊
I want to have a height of 4ft for the spillway plus the 2ft depth of the pond and the length of the water feature will be 15ft.
Do you have a formula for working out the pump /filter capacity that would give me about the same flow rate as the one in the video that would be good for the height I'm aiming for?
Many thanks for the video 🙏
I'm glad it helped, thank you for your comment
I would love to have a water feature. I find listening to them is so relaxing
When nature takes over. It should start to soften the stones and looks more natural. By moss growing on the stones or the stones turning green. Also the plants starts to fill out 👍👍
Wearing the GoPro camera on your head made me too dizzy, I couldn't finish watching this video.
Very nice job on the stream and especially the plantings. I like the idea of using the extra underliner on top of the liner to protect the top liner from the rocks...
seems like you'd be able to get the same effect with a lot less foam?
Great ideas! I am glad I watched this, as the techniques you used, I have never thought of!
thank you I'm glad if it helps
After watching dozens of these water feature videos, this is by far the most detailed. There are steps shown that are not even touched on in other videos. So smart to place more fabric on the liner and under the stones to prevent any damage to the liner. Thank you so very much for sharing such a helpful video!
Just watch aquascape videos....
Go watch Atlantis Water Gardens. He tells you that do step by step but they dont show you long ass clips of it. This water feature is a joke

@@joerybicki1679 very mean with their information..as you are taking it aay from them👌
@@joerybicki1679 This is another option, many can't afford Aquascapes or their products.
Good too see great veterans in the industry still properly building projects the correct way!
That’s a good idea, adding salt to the water. I always wondered what you would use to stop algae 👍👍
yes it works great just don't overdo it
@@CarlTheLandscapeGuy Is that table salt or Epson salts? I can't read the packaging.
I’ve wanted to build a stream like this for my dogs who love water and love to walk through water but not necessarily swim in it. That and it seems to be better lasting than the old school ponds that always fail
Absolutely I’m agree with you
Thumb nail look beautiful, so does the initial footage in the beginning and the finished project is lovely😍... But once you switched too The head camera footage gives a feeling of MOTION SICKNESS JUST WATCHING VERY HARD TO WATCH... Couldn't finish watching movement off the camera was making me dizzy..
That's amazing! I am just putting in a pond with a waterfall. I got some great ideals now Thank you!
Besides the sound of running water, wants you to use the toilet 😂 it’s so relaxing 👍
lol true
that is some really nice work I like how you take pride & care in your work & do it right looks fenomimal
thank you appreciate the nice feedback
This is super..unlike those who want to make it look a heist to do this by your own.✔✔✔👌
King, may God bless the work of your hands. Im now doing one here in KENYA by the help of your tutorials👍👏👏👏👏
sounds good 👍 please send me a picture to info@carlthelandscapeguy.com
Amazing work! thank you so much for sharing your art and know how! In case it rains really heavily do you ever apply a little tube for the excess water to run out?
a drain near the lowest point of the water stream probably makes sense if you have a lot of rain, thank you for the feedback
wow, where are you located? I would love to have you come to my home and give me an estimate on putting this in my back yard!
thanks.. where are you from

Hi Carl! LOVED every minute of this video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge..
May we have the link to the LED lighting kit? 👍👍👍
hey thank you you for watching and commenting I will go through the links again
Looking at doing exactly what you’ve just shown. This is a massive help, subscribed and great video
thank you and good luck on your project
Camera work makes me dizzy. Can't keep watching.
I was mesmerized watching this! Wonderful job. Can someone tell me is it safe for dogs to drink from and how I can assure the water stays clean
thanks 👍
Such satisfaction when you start the pump. I'm putting a water feature into my own backyard this summer. Every single piece of this video was so so helpful. Thank you.
It's like a giant stone puzzle. Great work! Looks amazing!
Everything looks beautiful but the hard work behind it is always respected...cheers !
It's a really nice stream, I would like mines to be larger with a more natural water connection if I'm next to a natural stream or such. Also flows nicely with the pond.
It looks completely man-made very amateur. If you ask me in my honest opinion it looks like it's not supposed to be there
Must be nice I need a jack hammer to get through my dirt. Heavy clay in summer turns rock hard.
In a river the bigger the pressure the bigger the stone it will move, so the big stones settle first the smaller ones will go further. The rule is big to small my friend not as you do a man made jigsaw . Sorry it’s the rules. Craig Sheffield, England.
Beautiful! You made this look so effortless. What a dream garden.
Thanks for posting 👍💯
Great job bud, looks amazing 👌
I have subscribed 👊😎
thank you
How much detailing he has given to this artificial stream ... Amazing
You are a Total Pro! Thank you for the measurements and for showing leveling, concrete, and fabric underlayment!
Love it... I think some larger stones down the edges would have really elevated it vs the many piles of small stones.. great work!! Keep it up!
It’s beautiful.. are you in Houston because I have a small backyard and this is what I need a small natural looking stream
you should use more different size of rocks, that alone will make a very big difference
I can see why Aquascape say to use large stones and not a lot of smaller ones, this looks artificial
I agree. yikes. So much effort to produce a cheap looking result. I would instantly remove this "Viking grave" from my garden, if I bought this house.
@@regmoto let’s see your video…
Can you do better? Show us.
The aquascape guys are a bunch of dude-bros but they definitely do waaaay better work with far less foam, lol.
I wish someone had thought to lay weed fabric under my walk way, it’s huge, goes around the house, garage, and makes the drive way plus two patios, all weedy!
That’s crazy! I found your channel a while ago looking at how to build a rock wall. Now this! It’s like Christmas came early 😂
😂😂 glad if it helps, take care!
Could you add a uv filter for algae? This way animals can still drink the water?
that might work
i don't like it .... you used too many small rocks .... next time used bigger rocks ..... if you don't have it .... buy it
great thanks 👍😌
Awesome. Loved how you broke everything down. Subscribed! Just bought my first house, and going to watch your videos to get some ideas for my horrible yard.
Good info for diy'ers thankyou. Tho head cam footage is a little nauseating. Too shaky. Other than that beautiful stream def taking some tips from here
yeah i know, thanks
A great job. I notice that you dialled the pump flow back from 10,000 L /hr. What flow rate did you end up using?
i think the customer wanted it at 75%
Ow that would be much better with pond
it's easy to add the stream to a pond but in this case the customer wanted no pond for safety reasons
Javanese culture in Indonesia understands that if we are friends with water then water will provide many benefits for us, success for "Carl..........." ....Java Central, Indonesia, watch this video
im glad to hear it and best wishes to you
Thank you very much. Your video is a resource for me to learn how to build a stream in my backyard.
Wonderful. And here I can't even stack two rocks together, let alone dig a hole! What am I doing wrong?
Beautiful 😻 I must try this thanks for sharing this wonderful video with me
you are welcome
Nice job 👌. Boy I bet you slept well after all that work ! 😴 Lol
thanks, i sure did
Such a precise job. You really know your stuff. It’s great to see the little details
Thank you very much!
The foam does not keep rocks from moving, the foam is to keep the water moving forward to create waterfalls and so you dont lose water under the rocks.
*I'm making a stream using you plans. Thank you stunning work.*
thank you for your feedback and I hope your stream comes out nice
Very beautiful and a detailed video , Love it
This is beautiful and so comprehensive. Thank you for sharing all of the detail. Excellent job!
you can actually get better water quality with water plants as they help keep the water balanced. for example algae wont grow if you balance the water. sun exposure/nitrogen levels/fish/plants.
Excellent tutorial and step-by-step instructions. Ten thumbs up to you.
this is amazing but the head cam video didnt do much for my head, it just made me dizzy and i had to keep shutting off
Love and enjoy the video. Thank you.
Is the salt really enough to keep the water clear. I know with having a lot of aquatic plants they will process the nitrogen and starve single cell algae . I’ve done a lot of research and have done many things to maintain crystal clear water in my Koi pond. I realize having fish makes the need for a whole new eco system. Mechanical as well as biological filtration . I’m just curious that this can be maintained without a filter of some sort. Very nice Video though and it looks beautiful. With all the evaporation from the falls how much water will this require weekly? Have you considered adding an auto fill valve to it? I have a sprinkler system in my yard and ran a line to the pond. My system is Wi-Fi so I can just add water using my phone app. With fish you have to be careful not to add too much at a time due to chlorine with city water. I always put in a little detoxifier just to be on the safe side. Obviously having fish is much more involved than simply a pond less fall. However Koi are really enjoyable (especially at feeding time) and well worth all the effort. If any of your readers would like any information on a Koi pond I’d be more than happy to share what I know. Thank you for the video and it was very well done.
thank you very much very good ideas especially the Wi-Fi system, yes the salt works very well, the good thing is you can start off with a little bit and then add until the water is algae free, some algae on the rocks are ok
@@CarlTheLandscapeGuy since writing that I added a charcoal filter to the water line to remove chlorine. Thx
While the channel Atlantis water gardens are more natural in their streams, they dont go into this much detail at all.
Not a fan of this technique...I never used bricks or pavers underneath to form pools & falls but used the contours of the rocks I would select. 2) I never used the spray foam... thought it looked phony...I used small river rock and gravel just as it is in a creek or brook. lastly I used larger boulders in the natural dams & falls. I like mine waterfall projects to look natural no matter the setting...his looks manufactured.
Why don’t you make your own video then Chestwick
Great work and thanks for sharing
Very informative .
Sir , thank you so much for sharing your knowledge .
Watching from Sri Lanka .
You are an artist in your trade. Stunning.
its a very nice design. well-done. I personally would have open the last reservoir as a dam to host more fish and plants to limit the amount of rock, but only my opinion. but thanx for the great work
Splenndid work im following

it doesn't matter they are all the same just pick the right size for your project
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks 🙏🏽 for showing how it is done.
Hey that foam looks good, I wonder about the foam you're using, hey is that foam you are using sticking the rocks together?, Just realized that you're using foam, interesting use of foam here I must say

It's a very nice well-made video, however; the product's websiteFor the pumps and filters , you will not find a price or any mention of cost unless you contact someone and email your request. Now in my experience that is ALWAYS an indication that what you are looking at is going to be WAY MORE EXPENSIVE than you're probably willing to pay unless you are extremely wealthy and if you were extremely wealthy you wouldn't be looking at that website in the first place, your personal Gardener would be looking at that website.

That's really lovely we have a stream but at the moment needs some attention
I'm at 9 mins into the video and have been made watch 6 or more adds...... Great video but i don't think I will watch it all if there are many more. More adds than video.
very cool design. you are very creative! love it!!

the plants will grow
What and who makes the shovel you use to shovel and spread the rocks. You use it a lot in the video (when building the dams).
its a holstein style shovel, i love it
Overkill. Put your energies into something useful. like Pyramids, or Hanging Gardens of Babylon, or the War Machine.
what brand or type of protective fabric you use?
i don't know and I don't think it matters, if its too thin take double, it should be around 300 to 500 g/m2
