You guys need to keep something in mind. I think this was David Finchers first major Hollywood feature. He didn’t write it and the studio was up his ass the entire time. Once they were done filming major tampering to David’s cut was done after he had left the project. I believe he still disavows his involvement with this movie.
On. The bright side, you do start to see some of the camera work that David is known for even this early. Super subtle, which his major camera work often is, but there is an intimacy and closeness he’s able to achieve that makes you feel like you’re there in a way.
Also, Elliot Goldenthal wrote the score. Elliot doesn’t really work in film anymore. He writes concert music I think. However, he used to work constantly. This score is one of the most borrowed from action horror scores ever written. And given how disjointed the e movie feels at times, again dude to studio tampering, the score does a pretty good job here of smoothing out some of the rough edges.
You guys should look up the behind-the-scenes for this. There’s a lot of juicy stuff that happened behind the scenes.

The problem with Newt being in this movie is that Carrie Henn the actress who played her was 17 years old when Alien3 came out. She would have been aged up so the relationship woud have been different. Or she would have been recasted and then people would have said that it isn’t the same or the chemistry wouldn’t have been there…

A genetic clone grown from a woman who offed herself in order to follow through on her hatred of a thing, is made to be half THAT creature. She's more intelligent and aware than she lets her creators know and is forced to empathize with the thing she was previously willing to die with. It's the one chance we get to see Xenomirphs as more than a cruel force of nature, but just an animal trying to survive and thrive with it's own kind. The mother and child dynamic was one of Ripley's core values, and where we've seen her mother a human, we get to see her mother an alien. She always thinks ahead to the bigger picture, but she's forever cursed to lose her children thanks to the greed of her fellow humans.

Trying to top Alien or aliens was always gunna be difficult but imo the prison setting was fantastic, we still had the gore and tone. It just lacked the punch of aliens and the tension of Alien. Also thought Brian glover and Charles S Dutton were terrific in this

Practical effects in this era are only practical for stationary or slow movement. We never saw the aliens actually run before this. It was either moving very slowly, or only made a swift movement for a jumpscare. Getting a costume that moves quickly on all fours that doesn't look absolutely ridiculous would be really hard.
And yeah, they totally made Alien 3 feel like a full close out. So imagine our surprise when Alien Resurrection was announced. Yes, I think you should see it, but I honestly can't take AR as canon. Letting it be canon just hurts.

Fun fact: All that bad "CGI" is not actually CGI... it's bluescreened animatronics and puppets. The reason it stands out so bad is because in the hurried/bad production they did not get any of the lighting or animation correct on the models. They had no idea what a lot of scenes were even for as the story was constantly being re-written even after filming.
Also as a massive fan of the Franchise... despite it's many flaws... i still find this film better than resurrection, AVP, AVP:R, Prometheus and Covenant... all of which refused to stick to the lore... and don't care how great production, directing or acting is... if the core of the movie is ruined... so is the entire film.

If you watch any making of behind the scenes stuff, they used a rod puppet for a lot of the full body alien shots. The puppeting movement is actually really effective. What lets it down is tbe compositing. There are green lines everywhere and hand painted shadows that look terrible. This was one of the last movies of that era (1992) that used old school optical film compositing, much like Star Wars blue screen ships etc. Jurassic Park was made in 1993 and used digital compositing a year later, and the color grading and post production was so much better. So they were at the limit of the technology at the time. The only CGI alien in this movie is the cracking head from the heat.

First: I'm glad you guys are watching this series but I really wish someone had hooked you up with the extended versions. The extra scenes don't really improve much on the original film, but the next two are SO much better with the extra scenes restored.
In Aliens, we get more of the Hadley's Hope background, and see that Ripley had a daughter who died while she was gone.
In Alien 3, there's more characterization and some of the odd timing choices make more sense.
Second: I've LOVED this movie, since it released, and it's literally the last Alien film as far as I'm concerned.
I don't understand anyone who says that this movie undermined the last film, by killing Newt and Hicks. Ripley had a happy ending when she entered the cryopod at the end of the first film...then, the universe smacked her awake and told her she wasn't finished. In Aliens, THEY HAD THEIR HAPPY END, and this is the universe smacking Ripley awake again.
I can't understand anyone watching the tone of the first film and thinking to themselves, "Y'know...I bet this becomes a franchise about the strength of the family dynamic." 🤔

It's like with any animal that has the focus put onto it, during this kind of situation, it becomes more personalised. Or films that feature effects for deaths that are meant to look more realistic, that's just as upsetting to see. FYI it wasn't a complaint, I love alien 3, but that scene although you don't see everything, is unpleasant because of the context given.

I think my question is, how is the bison less sad than the dog? Both animals were, in theory, torn apart by the alien. I mean, people love kids, and Newt is still gone, and her body is even cracked and examined on screen. Just because something is uncomfy doesn't always diminish it to shock value.

i personally saw alien 3 first, so i am probably bias, but i personally really like alien 3. i kinda has 90’s dystopian future vibe… anyway since i seen all now i kinda understand why ppl are upset.

This movie gets a lot of 💩, but I still like it, especially the “assembly cut .” I wish we could have seen David Fincher’s actual version.

@@Paul_1971 Agreed, it's a much much better film, even though I did enjoy the chestburster ending from the theatrical cut.

@@TheBraunMachine2K24 Yes - I do like the chestburster but think she goes into the lava better in the assembly cut though. I would've liked the chestburster back in the assembly cut and also the dog instead of ox, as the dog is more agile. However having the chestburster come out there and then means she had no chance anyway and makes Bishop ll's offer pointless, so I'm a bit conflicted on that one. Great for the visual, not so great for the story.

A lot of people would not recommend watching this after watching the 2nd Alien movie. But I think that having the real Bishop showing up at the end, makes this movie worth watching despite the poor effects used on the xenomorph.

Ikr? It's sadly overhated but it had so many great performances in it. Weaver, Dutton, Dance, Henriksen, Glover etc. The fourth film, I had fun with, Christie was my favorite character next to #8 but it's not as serious as the first three. It added so much to the lore, the first Alien film to show what happens when a non-human gets facehugged, they bring this aspect back in the Prometheus & the AvP films.
Unpopular opinion but I think the third film had the best tone in the franchise, the action was cool in Aliens but I love that they brought back the serious & unpredictable horror tone for this film. It was more like Alien than Aliens was & had much more brutal deaths. And as much as I loved Hicks (he was awesome), I felt I learned more about Dr. Clemens in this film than I did Hicks. In that confession scene, I felt really bad for the character. It's one of the best scenes in the franchise IMHO, along with the speech scene with Ripley & Dillon near the end. I do wished that Tara & Aaron watched the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 though, it's a much much better watch.

I told you on your _Aliens_ reaction that you needed to watch the special edition of _Alien 3_ when you were gonna react to it.
The special edition is closer to what David Fincher *_wanted_* to give us but the studio basically bullied and forced him to trim it down. And the fact that you watched the theatrical cut infuriates me.

This is true. I'm disappointed that they didn't watch the Fincher cut because it actually makes a bit more sense and focuses on characters a lot more. One glaring difference is the Alien doesn't come from a dog in the proper cut.

I couldn't agree with you more! I too was disappointed they chose the theatrical version. 20 years ago the only way to watch the workprint version of A3 was on the 9 disc Alien Quadrilogy dvd set. It was patched together and the audio of the added scenes was unintelligible at times, but today the special edition is easily available and completely remastered. It is the better film and miles above the disjointed theatrical release.

Yeah, a lot of films the version watched often is a matter of "interesting" or "extra", depending.... others.... others it's just an entirely different film. I don't bother with anything other than the Extended/Special version of 3. So very different.... not extra or longer.... flat out different scenes and story build.
