It's really incredible to look back at the original Alien and realize they managed to collect seven truly excellent character actors in one moderately budgeted sci-fi horror flick. Peter Doyle doesn't get nearly enough credit for assembling that cast.

Andrew, over here in the UK we had an attraction called Alien War, you got to go on a tour of a wayland facility when there's an alien escape. The group is escorted through corridors exactly like the movies by colonial marines with real props from the films. At key points aliens come out of the shadows and chase you to the next part including a lift where a planted actor is dragged out of the closing doors. It all ends as you make it to a drop ship and go through a simulated re-entry. Was truly epic
@@DappaPool me and my friends practically lived there and became good friends with the staff, even got special runs at the end of the day where all the staff would join in. Best one had all the marines killed off and an alien in the escape pod with us and the last marine died fist fighting it so we could escape
Something i noticed in the theater is at some point they show a countdown clock with like 15 minutes or something. I started a timer and the movie stuck to the real time collision with the ring. Very cool. (Edit: I was the only one in the theater so my phone light didn't bug anyone)
Fede Alvarez said in an interview that he's been given the go ahead to wrap up the story of David from Prometheus & Covenant by Ridley Scott in a future sequel to Romulus. So, that should be fun to see Rain & Andy run across David.
Listened to an interview Fed did for AVP Galaxy and mentioned what the company knew of the pathogen was due to information that Janek or Vickers sent back to the company including the mural they found in LV-223 which surprised me since I was expecting him to say David’s messages with his experiment on Shaw and the engineers in Planet 4. Plus in the film only mentioning events and lore from Prometheus not Covenant I’m suspecting that Fede might retcon Covenant with this upcoming sequel and we might see Shaw and the engineers back. If that’s the case I’m game since it will redeem Noomi’s Dr Shaw Character.
@@0311uli I wouldn't really be on board with any retcons. Maybe Fede can address the big controversy of Covenant by clarifying that David only believes he created the Xenomorph. But I wouldn't want to just ignore that film entirely, especially since Fede seems to legitimately like something from every entry.
@@trevthomscultclassiccorner2037 many on other forums were pushing this theory of the messages being canon but Romulus and Fede clearly state nah whatever was sent from the Prometheus is canon and whatever happened in Covenant yea will deal with that later on lol 😆
@@0311uli Yeah, I hope he does. Because out of the last three films, Fede's characters are probably the ones we're attached to the most, so I hope they give David his comeuppance. Plus it'd just be nice to see Fassbender in full villain mode again. 😁
@jeremycovelli right...prolly cause u werent even paying attention like the previous comment. I see how a film may be boring when u miss 90% of the info
Fede Álvarez has confirmed who is the father of Kay’s baby. It’s Bjorn, which is gross because they’re cousins…it also is interesting, because of how messed up the Engineer/Human/Xenomoprph hybrid looks, makes a tiny bit of sense…
Fun Fact: It was confirmed by director Fede Alvarez on a Reddit thread theorizing that the father of Kay's unborn child is their cousin Bjorn. As he responded to the OP of the thread: "Good catch!"
At first I very much didn’t like that that they used the late great Ian Holm’s likeness for “Rook”, but later I found out that not only did his family approve, they said also Ian would’ve loved to have been part of this movie because he loved working on the first one so much. And I agree he would’ve loved to have been a part of this, just watch old interviews of him talking about Alien. Also, I thought it was very clever for the company to name their androids after chess pieces, like Bishop and Rook. It shows what the company thinks not only of its androids, but of all of its employees, as nothing more than disposable pieces on a game board that can easily be replaced.
@@spextrekid9410well would probably have made it a bit obvious if they had given Ash the name of a chess piece if that's what the company does. Since nobody should have known he was an Android
Well thank God they got permission so we didn't get another lawsuit from a movie using CGI to bring back a dead actor for a character in a prequel movie
Exactly. People really think their opinions mean more than Ian Holmes family's and Ian Holmes himself. This is a great example of how Ai can be harmless and a really cool way to (consentually) recreate someone who's passed likeness.
When I watched this in a theater, the CGI for "Rook" looked abysmal. But rewatching it on a smaller screen doesn't look quite as bad. But it's insane that even with all the technological advances we have in 2024, the "puppet" Ash still looks and works better from the OG movie back in 1979.
Depends on how you look at it I guess, sure ash looked better in terms of looking like a realistic human in facial movements. but considering rook was so heavily damaged and god knows how long it's been since he got damaged, the uncanny valley really works in their favor in this instance in my opinion. Like there would be no way every single facial "muscles" would be working,
💯 agree those graphics for his face looked like something we’d see out of a 2008 regular budget movie. I assume it partially had to with the fact that the bilbo/ash actor died already so they can’t have used his face to recreate his younger self, looked like they just did a lame copy. And the call back to his stupid line “ you have my sympathies” was weak writing and would’ve been better without.
I'm willing to forgive some uncanny-valley breaching given the context, rook is already buggered up, and he has no reason to spend much effort on pretending to be human given the damage so he's probably not going to try that hard beyond the bare minimum, he doesn't care if he creeps people out when he just needs Andy to work for him. I'm sad that Ian couldn't reprise the role in person but it has been pointed out that he would have happily started in an alien film again given the chance, even if just one last time, I would be a bit more worried if this becomes a regular habit however, maybe next time they could bring back the Bishop series Androids, oh who knows, maybe David will show up one last time... crazy as he is
I like that Aaron mentioned Lev! There are so many Last of Us Part II connections in this movie (almost distractingly so). The place they leave is Jackson. Isabela Merced is playing Dina in the HBO show, where she plays a pregnant character in a world of monsters. Oh, and the main girl looks EXACTLY like Part II Ellie, even down to the hair style.
This! Throughout the film, I was thinking that so many of the cast could play characters like Dina, Lev, Jordan and ofc Ellie. And I’m glad that Isabela got cast as Dina!
Lmfao the studio wanted this movie to go direct to streaming and I’m SO GLAD IT DIDN’T! Really great film, the best in the franchise since Aliens. Glad you three loved it!
Fun fact - Fede Álvarez said he was directly inspired by the Last of Us II when writing this script. The colony the characters are heading to is called Jackson, which is Tommy's town in the game. Navarro's appearance is inspired by both Lev and Yara Raine's appearance is reminiscent of Ellie's look once she arrives in Seattle Isabella Merced was cast in this film as Kae prior to her casting as Dina in the show, both serving almost as a companion character to our main protagonists 😁
I think it's really cool that even newer games such as TLOU II can be used as inspiration. Another example is Prey. The director took nods from God of War (2018) with Naru's throwing axe and the Predator's shield.
Aron - I want them both to survive. Please don't break my heart movie Me - this is the franchise that murdered Hicks n Newt off-screen. Don't hold your breath for mercy and prep your heart for breaking...
@@shikitohno47 Let me make it clear. I don't like the movies that came after Aliens. So far, Alien Romulus is the only exception. As for other media, Alien Isolation was a damn good game.
This in IMAX was, like, pretty good. The sets are B E A U T I F U L. The cinematography was A S T O U N D I N G. Thought David Jonsson, Cailee Spaeny, and co was all great as well. Really hope we see more of this cast, but I do like seeing new crews in each Alien film.
The modern look and cinematography blended with the old-school Alien space/tech vibe was absolutely phenomenal, the breathtaking beauty of outer space with the terror of Xenomorphs in a dark, claustrophobic ship about to crash (and A LOT of Face-Huggers). They really got the most out of their $80 million dollar budget because this movie was awesome. A great combination of Alien terror with some Aliens action.
To address Andrew's comment about hoping Rainn was Ripley's daughter: Ripley's daughter is the main character in the video game Alien: Isolation (which was also adapted into a web series). Unless they retcon it in the films, I do believe it's considered canon.
Yes, I did know that, as I played the game many years ago I just did not realize the video game was canon. I almost thought they were adapting this from the video game.
Pretty sure Amanda Ripley was confirmed in the additional scene in Aliens as well, though I could be wrong, good excuse to watch it again, that said, given how much Romulus directly references Alien Isolation I'm pretty certain Rainn is an entirely new character
I’m a big horror fan and I don’t usually feel scared when I watch scary movies. But for the first time in a long time I felt genuinely creeped out when they revealed the offspring. I really loved this movie. Love the reactions!
I love this film. Saw it 4 times in cinemas and 2 times already since it came to digital. Fede Alvarez is a genius, and I especially loved that he paid homage to Alien Isolation, and lifted key design and tech from the first few movies and Isolation. I just love now that we're getting an Alien Isolation sequel - and I'd like to think that this movie was the final word that got it to finally happen after 10 years.
Romulus was an incredible movie the acting was great and the practical effects were all amazing definitely one of my favorites horror movies of this year
It's the Jurassic World of the Alien Franchise (and that isn't a compliment as I loathe ALL JWorld movies). Bunch of 'member berries and a mashup of the best & worst moments of the entire Franchise. A nice effort but makes totally ZERO sense when watching this Member Berryfest AFTER ALIEN & BEFORE ALIENS. It's no better than Alien 4 IMO, which is funny as it apes Alien 4 ALOT.
Definitely the best movie. I'll rank it on the top. Fun Fact. The aliens are not CGI but animatronics and the offspring hybrid is not CGI but very tall 7 Feet,7inches dude who wears the costume.
As Greg and John said in their review, this movie really steps on the gas pedal and just keeps ramping up. In my opinion, these 3 specific scenes signify the increase of stakes: when Kay screams as the chest burster emerges and their ship crashes into Romulus, when Tyler is dragged up into the ceiling and you see all the drones racing towards the camera (coolest death in the movie imo), and when the offspring is revealed, crouching in air duct.
Everyone missed the small, brief Easter egg while the station was crashing: the Narcissus shuttle carrying Ripley and Jonesy can be seen after it was ejected.
which is getting a sequel, at long last, I kinda love that Alien Isolation inspired Romulus, and now the Success of Romulus is helping us get a new Alien Isolation sequal
1:06:50 im commented about this because one of them talking about rain to be reveal as ripley doughter. So judging by that, they seem not know about alien isolation game is about story of ripley's daughter.
@@LoyaltotheNightsky yes, lots of visual references to it in Alien Romulus too. Aliens Fireteam Elite also includes Seagson and their Working Joe androids, which are very cathartic to... enact revenge, against after playing Alien Isolation
(fun movie facts) (1) the rook android was a tribute to the person who played Ash in the original movie (2) the offspring was played by an actual person in make up on costume not CGI
I genuinely loved it. It gave me the vibes of the original Alien. Back to basics! The ending battle however, with that…whatever the hell it was…let’s never do that again lol
Saw this in 4DX in a packed theater and it was incredible. The chair pounding on ur back during the chest buster scene was so freaky, and the ankle ticklers on the footrest of the seat during the facehugger swarms made me jump out of my seat haha
Really don’t know where they will go for a sequel but I hope and pray Fede comes back. I would’ve hoped for a prequel showing Chap come back to life, the enduring chaos on the station and ending with its death where it was found. Best we got with that though is just a comic on it
Andy's actor did such a great job. He managed to take on being a an android perfectly while also having the compassionate parts of humans. Always wanting to protect Rain. Andy is most likely the best character in this movie
"The Company" is such an interesting dystopian entity if you think about it. In our lifetime, we see companies come and go, even massive ones perish eventually. But Weyland-Yutani here owns entire planets, they literally normalized cryosleep based space travel, where the travel time alone is often longer than some of our companies total lifetime. They're literally so big, that their companies history spans not just decades, but even centuries, constantly getting bigger, stronger, and more influential. They're the actual monster of the franchise. 9:47 Afaik, the individual rocks are usually kilometers apart from each other. So it would likely not be that cool sci-fi trope of flying through asteroid fields. 14:36 That was my thought too. Also, Isabella Merced playing a pregnant girl here is also highly relevant in that context... x) 31:44 Cursed squirting. :D 45:38 Oh come on, we literally saw the reason in the beginning of the movie. 1:06:45 This is way too late in the timeline for that. Also, you play her daughter in Alien Isolation. To me the movie felt mostly inspired by Alien & Alien Isolation, with a bit of Aliens, Alien 3, Resurrection, Prometheus & Covenant sprinkled in. Unfortunately, as much as I love the cassette futurism, the visuals, the audio, the world building, and the acting... The movie itself is really badly written. It also tried WAY too hard to play with the nostalgia triggers for the original movie. But like... A station SOMEHOW and from SOMEWHERE managed to get flung out of orbit, which is already extremely implausible, but then it happens to get caught within the orbit of their planet? Like come on... But that's unfortunately just the beginning of a lot of absolutely bonkers happenstances throughout the movie, like the sliding of the ship along the hull, just to be caught & land in the conveniently open hangar which they somehow completely ignored, while squeezing through the tiny maintenance shaft, which I still don't know how they planned to get the cryo pods through there (luckily the station had some convenient extraction mechanisms for them). The way they displayed zero gravity was also completely nonsensical. When she blasted the xenomorphs, the acid would've continued to float in all directions, ultimately killing the hull, not swirl around in a weird tubular pattern.
No joke when I saw this in the theaters with a packed house, and the offspring was revealed, 3 people around me shouted, "WTF?!" at almost the exact same time
Saw this one twice in theaters, it’s one of those movies thats such a genuine spectacle to see on the big screen. And the first time was even in IMAX too, I absolutely loved it
@53:48 I want to know more about the xeno I assume that Bjorn tried to kill with the taser that's seen face to face with Rain. It had electricity like running through it's head.
It's called "Scorch", Neca is making an action figure for it. Fede said he wanted to have one main Xeno that was recognizable throughout the movie, like the Grid alien from AVP. Yes you are correct, those are sparks in the head from being shocked with the electrical prod. The prod is also used in Alien Isolation
I've been a fan of this franchise since 1979 -- Alien is my all-time favorite movie -- and I thoroughly enjoyed this installment. Can't wait for it to come out on Blu Ray so I can get my own physical copy. Thank you for reacting to it!
The way Rain uses the pulse rifle to propel herself in zero G was also seen in Ready Player One, Artemis does the same thing with a pulse rifle in the Distracted globe nightclub
If you recall...then first Alien catch phase....was..."in space no one can hear you scream"....and in this presentation...we hear the pregnant girl...Scream! I love this movie....so original!!

@@_MARC0_40well Romulus takes place after Alien and Prometheus and Covenant take place before Alien. Fede Alvarez and his crew did a fantastic job for this film esp. the set and practical effects. Not to mentioned Fede is a huge fan of the game "Alien: Isolation" which is the inspiration for this film.
I know I’m being picky, but the engineer in me wonders how that laser cut the rock in half but didn’t cut the xenomorph that was inside it in half… somehow it made a perfect shell lol
If we ever get a live-action Dead Space movie, I really hope Fede Alvarez directs it. I’ve never played Alien: Isolation, but it’s probably very similar to Dead Space in tone, and this movie definitely gave off Dead Space vibes with the dark, eerie abandoned station in the desolate vacuum of space with monsters loose on the station. And I absolutely loved it🙌🏼. You can see and feel the influence from the Alien: Isolation game in this😱
This is my movie of the year and yes over Deadpool & Wolverine. There was no doubt in my mind that DP3 was gonna be bad. This movie basically had the future of the IP on its hands and it saved it. I think this movie is the reason they finally confirmed we’re getting a sequel to Alien: Isolation after 10 years.

@@nathancullinan5195 I didn’t mind the fan service in Deadpool & Wolverine because outside of Multiverse of Madness the characters actually have a purpose and aren’t just “hey remember us!” and we don’t do anything. At least with the other heroes.
I was very lucky enough to see alien on opening night in a 4DX cinema. The chestburster scene, had the seats push into your back, in sync with the scene. It felt like we were all getting chestbursted. It was amazing. Also, don't get me started on the spaceship crash scene, the chair was flying everywhere. And any acid scene had water, which was really fun. I am so happy I was able to experience this. Me and my friend were loving it. Then we went back home to play alien: isolation, and we quit after 20 mins. Way too scary.
I’m actually really glad they added Andrew to the group for this reaction. Don’t get me wrong I love Tara and Aaron but the AvP:Requiem reaction was rough. Feel like someone with Andrews background knowledge kept this one grounded.

So many people making drama out of all the callbacks, here you have two new fans of the franchise having the hell out of fun of each callback, this is a fun movie to rewatch, as it should be.
A lot of die hard Alien fans can never be happy. It's either too many callbacks or not enough.
I however am a die hard fan and I LOVED it.

It's really incredible to look back at the original Alien and realize they managed to collect seven truly excellent character actors in one moderately budgeted sci-fi horror flick. Peter Doyle doesn't get nearly enough credit for assembling that cast.
It’s pretty dope and ballsy at the time for them to let Sigourney Weaver who was the less known actor at the time to be the final girl
Thank you Alien Romulus and Prey for saving your respective franchises.

Something i noticed in the theater is at some point they show a countdown clock with like 15 minutes or something. I started a timer and the movie stuck to the real time collision with the ring. Very cool. (Edit: I was the only one in the theater so my phone light didn't bug anyone)
I've heard James Cameron does always keep to a timer that's shown, so maybe that's an homage to him! Although I may be mixing up directors and timers
When they said they had 45 minutes left it was actually 45 minutes once the ship hit the ring. That’s attention to detail.
My theater was dead quiet the moment the Offspring showed up. You could hear a pin drop! It was amazing and this movie is too
That was freaking creepy just standing there
Fede Alvarez said in an interview that he's been given the go ahead to wrap up the story of David from Prometheus & Covenant by Ridley Scott in a future sequel to Romulus.
@@0311uli Also they're likely not considering David's messages canon since they were part of an extra & not actually part of the film.
@@trevthomscultclassiccorner2037 many on other forums were pushing this theory of the messages being canon but Romulus and Fede clearly state nah whatever was sent from the Prometheus is canon and whatever happened in Covenant yea will deal with that later on lol 😆

It shows what the company thinks not only of its androids, but of all of its employees, as nothing more than disposable pieces on a game board that can easily be replaced.
unfortunately that doesn't track with the first android: "Ash", or Alien Resurrections: "Call".
@dannore8077 you losers are never happy. Ai is the future, cry about it.
Really did a good job with this. The lad who played Andy was fantastic.
David Jonson played Andy
I love him! Didn't know him but man did he blew me away. Top tier performance with his "two" characters.
It’s actually not 100% cgi they used some cgi to enhance the face but it was animatronic
I'm sad that Ian couldn't reprise the role in person but it has been pointed out that he would have happily started in an alien film again given the chance, even if just one last time, I would be a bit more worried if this becomes a regular habit however, maybe next time they could bring back the Bishop series Androids, oh who knows, maybe David will show up one last time... crazy as he is
@@ryans413Is there any CGI? It looked like a deepfake to me. I don't think any movie of this budget could afford an actual CGI face

I haven't been jumpscared in a long time until seeing this in theaters the final scare got me

Definitely was worth the trip to the theater, wish I'd had a chance to go twice like with Dune 1 & 2
Fun fact - Fede Álvarez said he was directly inspired by the Last of Us II when writing this script.
The colony the characters are heading to is called Jackson, which is Tommy's town in the game.
Navarro's appearance is inspired by both Lev and Yara
Raine's appearance is reminiscent of Ellie's look once she arrives in Seattle
Isabella Merced was cast in this film as Kae prior to her casting as Dina in the show, both serving almost as a companion character to our main protagonists 😁
I think it's really cool that even newer games such as TLOU II can be used as inspiration.
Another example is Prey. The director took nods from God of War (2018) with Naru's throwing axe and the Predator's shield.

David Jonsson as Andy is an absolute revelation. It's seriously like seeing Daniel Kaluuya or Barry Keoghan for the first time.

Andrew - "Throw her back in there and close the damn thing!" Erm... how would that work exactly? LMFAO

They're the actual monster of the franchise.

45:38 Oh come on, we literally saw the reason in the beginning of the movie.
No joke when I saw this in the theaters with a packed house, and the offspring was revealed, 3 people around me shouted, "WTF?!" at almost the exact same time
my theater was weirdly empty with only maybe 3 people, but it had the bonus of making it very easy to focus on the movie
