Quick question, why is ツ added at the end of almost every onomatopoeia and why isn't it pronounced?

So the little ッ at the end of some sounds are there (usually) because it implies it's a sound that last a very small amount of time
Yknow how a half note is a regular note with a flag? Well imagine that little ッ is the flag on the note (ザワ)

Ever since I've learned hiragana and katakana I've found that reading and dissecting onomatopoeia is actually a lot of fun.
