Computers think of shapes in terms of vertices, so no matter how smooth something looks, in reality it's a series of points that can be connected to make a shape. Most points are most easily connected with triangles, single their only shape constraint is "connects three coplanar points" and since three is the fewest points from which you can make a plane, any three points in existence will always be coplanar. Think of a perfect sphere, were it rendered vertex-by-vertex, instead of with an algorithm that simplifies the shape into a series of triangles and/or rhombuses as a 3d modeler would use. There aren't any vertices in a real sphere, so there's no real number of points which could ever make a perfect render of one. You'd need infinite points, which would would literally take infinite processing power and never load in. So that's why older characters from games made for less powerful machines look blockier; the processing power left over for calculating all the points within your character after they'd used the rest making the game work was limited to maybe a few dozen data points instead of the thousands or millions that today's GPUs can run.

"One of my favorite things about shapes... is the shapes they come in."
Oh, I see... this is one of those LSD videos...

The only thing to fear is sphere itself.

“You can’t make a gyroelongated square bipyramid without dropping a few tiles”
One of my favorite sayings. I remember my father saying it to me when I was but 12 years old. Changed my life.
he is getting more insane with every video

Okami85 nope
I'm getting gyroelongated just watching this.
And what does that mean @Ben Thayer ?
Ah yes, a nice gyro elongated DONG.

A 22 min Michael's toys video? What a treat!

*"ooOOWHH"*
WillBe I swear if he's not C. Falcon's voice actor for Smash 5 Nintendo would do the world a great injustice (prism).
Those shapes are actually really fundamental for explaning the basics of chemistry. This video really helps me studying for my inorganic chemistry class. I wish I had known that when I was still in school.

Really?
@@want-diversecontent3887 yeah
This is the most honest, and most Micheal thumbnail I've ever seen
I can see so many out of context vsauce videos coming out from this video
I have learned more geometry in the first 5 minutes of this video than an entire year of a geometry class

I can make a prisim out of the justice for that rhombohedron you murdered in cold blood!
please.... Seek vengeance!
THE RHOMBOHEDRON OF JUSTICE!
The rhombohedron was an invader of the peaceful strictly convex nation. It’s death was justified.
@@insurgentspi0, so you are implying they were right to be so strict about their convexity? rhombohedron didn't chose to have coplanar trangles! that's bigotry.
I really feel like Michael has just embraced the fact he is a meme sometimes
I was thinking the same thing, i actually think he purposely sets himself up to be used as a meme.
19:37 "Can you spare a square?" That was an informative video, thank you!
you have so many toys
15:53 Michael said "the one that disappears on the table" instead of calling it black.
Michael is not racist
Be like Michael
I remembered when he said:
"When you look into the mirror,
It gets.. you-coloured"
Yeah. Just like not being racist.

This video made me want to get a bunch of those magnetic shapes and just build stuff lol. Only Michael can make geometry genuinely entertaining
Michael likes strictly-convex toys :)

The snub cube can also be created by alternating a great rhombicuboctahedron (aka truncated cuboctahedron).
Good to know?
"Hey what's a rhombicubotahedron"
"Oh it's a truncated cuboctahedron"
"Cool thanks for specifying"
none of those things are real words
@@freds_chess No the rhombicuboctahedron and great rhombicuboctahedron are two different things
