I was rooting hard for Plup so this was a heartbreaker, but dang this was an amazing grands. My heart was pounding at so many tense situations. I hope this is the start of an awesome year for Plup, and we get to see him break back into the very top echelon of Melee
I'm an Hbox fan but massive props to Plup, he had hbox on the ropes multiple times in the winners bracket games. I would have been cheering for him if he took the win, made for some awesome games

I think it mostly stems from Sakurai's very anti-competitive spirit he's had since melee. With each addition being more and more casual and user friendly

Absolutely fantastic set and tournament in general. Hype for Plup and Hbox went super clutch at the end. I love how games like Melee, Marvel 2 and 3rd Strike (which I was also watching while summit was going on btw) can still thrive.

Has Hbox done shitty things in the past? Yes. Can we give people second chances or forgive them? Yes. I was rooting for Plup this entire grand finals and wanted Zain to win the tourney, I'm not some sort of Hbox fanbody. As well as that, Puff loses to Fox, Marth and possibly Falco, the most common characters. As well as that, Puff goes evenish with Falcon and has close matches with low tiers like Doc, Yink and GnW. All was saying was good job to Hbox for not just letting go to game 5 when there was a big deficit, winning neutral and choosing the win it or lose it move.
Gilgamesh so you’re mad about puff grab to rest but not about fox up throw up air that starts killing at 40 and is a much better option than puffs grab due to it being easier to mix up and chase where else puffs grab is mediocre at best because it’s hard to chase with due to puffs slow speed. You’re just a toxic cry baby get the hell out no one wants a bitch crying about a character being unbalanced when that very same game has characters like fox, falco, sheik, Marth, falcon, peach and icies, who all have equally as strong setups, tech chases, chain grabs, confirms etc.

I know many people don't like Hungrybox, but at the same time I don't think of anyone that would say what Hungrybox said at the end.
The reason Hungrybox is the number one player is because he is the biggest fan of the game. He loves seeing everything about the game, anything unique, even if it makes him lose. Everyone has had some complaints with Smash, wobbling, Marth, rest, dumb brackets, or even other Smash games but it's only Hungrybox that just loves seeing anything Smash related and you have to respect that.
I think many many people are just as big of fans of the game

It's crazy how a 20 year old "party" game, that was rushed through development, and has since had a multitude of unintended mechanics that are so uncompetitive, that they are banned in any serious setting, has spawned and maintained such a thriving community of people for all this time. It's truly a spectacle.
At this point, melee has just become like any other real sport, its timless, and I dont see it dying any time soon

It's so interesting that the commentators (specifically Armada) talk about the differences between "H-box's" Puff vs the other top Puffs in the competitive game. It astounds me that one person is so ahead of the field.
i had like goosebumps for so long after that speech. Actually gained so much respect for Hbox and the whole community. So sick that Armada was there and they shouted eachother out. Thats what life is about, lifting each other up and being supportive, building each other up through competition and staying respectful.

Almost everyone plays fox competitive, only one dude plays puff, and actually wins with it at the level of countering the best character in the game. Dont get why so much people hate on him wtf. He is the real underdog but i feel most of melee fans just await for his defeat. Crazy world. This guy is a master.
They don't hate him (except maybe Leffen) they hate that he plays puff because puff goes against why many find the game enjoyable.
Equinox Yeah I was going to say the same. I always root for Hbox cause he gives diversity to this Fox-Falco game, and it’s the best nowadays in melee. But yeah, Puff is a slow character, a defensive character, and it’s not going to be as popular as a crazy-speed-waveshinig Fox could be. And yeah, Hbox is the GOAT.

i wouldnt say playing puff makes u an underdog when she invalidates more characters than fox, Peach shiek samus and icies are good examples. The only character that she rly loses to albeit slightly, is fox. Every other character probably solidly favorable minus marth being close to even and she still does better than fox in that mu regardless

I dont see anyone playing jigglypuff at the level hbox does. So no, puff isnt the champion of melee, hbox is. Of course a player that wins a tournament is not an underdog, but he was, for years, the underdog, against a metagame of space animal mains that counter puff. he is that good, wins against a counter just by mastering his (yes, easier to master) character. And also, after years of losing that matchup of course
Plup fought valiently in this duel, but at the end of the day fate has decided that clutchgod will rein supreme. No being in this universe can avoid getting clutched on, it is an inevitability, a universal fact; fighting against it is futile since Hgod has already decided that it shall happen, and it shall be done. It is not wise to stand in the way of fate Plup, just accept the path that Hgod has decided for you, and live the rest of your life knowing full well that you can never escape the power of clutch.

@@kyukon2276 it's because it's really really fast. The upthrow timings from hbox are incredibly hard to react to. Put on top of that it's a fast 50 50 while he gets like 2-3 grabs a stock
Hibyguy it’s fast but also pretty predictable because puff only has a couple grab setups so honestly I think it might’ve been inexperience because people like armada with much more experience fighting hbox usually get the di and platform mixups like 75% of the time

Initially we wanted to turn video ratings off for grand finals, but we were afraid people would complain even more because "it was obvious ratings were disabled because Hbox won". Not sure if it's possible to "win" here. :(
