Lootboxes ARE gambling, despite how many lawmakers in EAs pokets says they arent

It doesn't matter what it actually is. What matters is what it legally is. As long as it's technically legal it will continue to be a problem.

Balatro, a game where you pay once for the base game and can buy the soundtrack if you want, has no other purchases. You don't gain or lose money by playing the game beyond that initial purchase. Lootboxes, though, are additional transactions with a randomized element. You can only lose money when buying lootboxes.
These laws are so stupid, man.

there are minecraft servers with Slot machines, and mojang allows this. it should be rated 18 and up.

3:41 not just that villagers should count as gambling because their trades are randomized and you use the in game currency of emeralds to trade

@Blue_Guy_The lol that's a good point, but i meant the servers that are making kids spend real money on slot machines. those shady scam severs are everywhere and mojang allows them to exist for some reason.

Honestly, I think Habbo Hotel was the start of the boom of all of these kind of gambling rooms.
Similar to the issue I mentioned in the vid, since you technically can't withdraw the in-game currency, it's legally not considered to be gambling so Mojang doesn't see a need to shut it down. Probably to make it easier for themselves so they don't have to actively monitor or police the content of every Minecraft server.

So apparently Poker, a Cardgame that can be teached by anyone, is connected to gambling. Just for that fact that Poker, a Cardgame, is connected to real money, Ballatro got an 18+.
Why does UNO not have an 18+ rating?
It is also a Cardgame, that can be teached by anyone, that could be used for gambling with real money. ANY cardgame could be used for gambling.

Not to mention that sports gambling, at least in the US (not sure about Europe) is a MUCH bigger market than card gambling, which would mean all sports games teach gambling with or without lootboxes.

In my country, we play Big Two (Dai Di). It's a popular 4-player card game where each person is dealt 13 cards, and the goal is to clear your hand using poker hands-no gambling involved...
PEGI's gambling rule seems like a blanket approach to the issue. Automatically categorizing anything that seems to "teach" gambling or include gambling-like elements as PEGI 18 feels like a simple way to appear proactive, but it comes across as lazy especially when unique situations like this pop up.

If this is 18+ for "teaching gambling", then why isn't Mario 18+? After all, you kill a LOT of enemies in those games. By their logic, that's teaching murder.

i mean, mario doesnt wanna make me step on turtles, but i have a higher desire to play poker, now that i know it's basic principles (intuitively know hand types and deck). nevertheless, yeah, Balatro will maybe make you like poker, but it wont get you addicted ti wasting all of your belongings on it, as would any p2w mc server from their slot machine lootboxes

I don't want to sound like that guy but hypothetically if a game explains what a roulette table does, and images show a roulette board with colors but you don't actually play it is it considered 18+ by pegi standards

Haven't played it myself and I don't plan to. Balatro strikes me as that of gambling your time away instead of gambling your money and time away. Is the incentive to be addicted worse? I think Balatro isn't nearly as bad as gambling, however compared to other forms of entertainment there's really no way I would sell my time away to pure RNG rather than something with infinitely more depth. If I want to play a roguelike I would play n-gon, tboi, or basically any other game with the RNG half, and then a half to test your skills in (ie: upgrades, then combat).
It does seem interesting though that a lot of people have said Balatro is incredibly addicting, Source? All over the internet honestly, I couldn't tell you where specifically. But until people actually start experiencing the same drawbacks a gambling addiction yields, the game is more of a "oh yeah that exists" in the roguelike genre.

This logic is absurd. Teaching and incentivizing gambling are 2 different things
One allow you to potentially enjoy it later, while getting less ripped off because you know the rules (or maybe not, if the game is close enough to pker, why waste real money that you know you will lose?), the other is just straight extorsion
It's like banning tv spot about the risk of drugs, while proposing cigarets as an alternative.
But let's be honest here, this situation just prove what we now know for years: pegi rating are heavely biased, and just shouldn't be relied upon.Even 1-2 decades ago they were already becoming useless, with parents still buying call of duty to children that aren't even past 10. Nowadays even the "no screen before 3 years old" is non-existent. They are putting very high standard, so parents start thinking "oh well, my child is 6 yo, but this 10yo rated game isn't that bad, i can give it to him", and then it escalate to them giving gta V one year later.
But putting 18+ on game with lootboxes would be really, really beneficial for the came industry. Because while parents don't care about ratings, editors sure do. So they will resort to another techniques. Will it be better? Probably. Will they find even worse? That's a possibility. But making lootboxes 18+ would probably works like a soft ban of lootboxes, something people have been awaiting for years now.

overwatch doesnt actually have loot boxes at all btw, overwatch 1 did, however they were easily obtainable for free and basically nobody bought them, they were more of just play the game and get a random reward
