    Thank you for exemplifying the KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) Principle. We too often tend to overburden ourselves with "stuff" we probably won't need, but constantly worry that we might. (We, meaning me).

    Great tips. The simple essentials. My best essential to share are zip ties. They are light, don't get tangled up, take up no space in your pack, and as far as throwing up a quick shelter to get out of the rain, nothing works faster. They don't snag, they hold lots of weight and clean up is a snap.

    I've enjoyed taking a pair of wading shoes (or whatever they are called) to Dartmoor in the summer but you still need your stick or equivalent. A bit of a luxury, you can wade in the rivers without shoes but they do help with the blue green slime on the stones in the rivers.

    100% on survival, I did a whole series on practical survival and the basic gist is, learn navigation because we are never further than 3 miles from a road in England and First aid, because the most likely thing stopping you getting to that road is an injury. Yes, I cover basic shelters too but again, if you have hours to build a MTV Cribs shelter, and you are fit and able to do that, you are better off using it to get to the road and flag down help!

    You are so right, you can't beat a good stick. My dad took a stick much like yours when he walked from Ipswich to London to start his degree, and Colin Fletcher used his when he walked the length of the the Grand Canyon. I often walk solo, and it gives me someone/thing to talk to. Yes, every walker needs a stick.

    • @thedartmoorpodcast
      @thedartmoorpodcast  5 месяцев назад +1

      Ha! Haven't started talking to mine yet, but it's only a matter of time. I was wondering recently if the walking stick could even be linked to the reason we've evolved to walk upright compared to the other apes. It would have been a very advantageous simplistic tool to our ancestors - I'll need to see if anyone clever than me has already pursued this line of thought.

    What a refreshing point of view and well narrated channel! There's so many clichés in Bushcraft that I'm a bit ashamed to call myself a bushcrafter. I guess I fit the description myself all too well. I like a bowdrill challenge every now and then and I got a thing with knives, saws and axes in combination with tarp camping. Perhaps I should be brave enough next time to just wear that flashy colourful T-shirt next time I attend a bushcraft gathering. Something I've fantasized about but have not yet mustered up the guts to do so! 😂

    • @thedartmoorpodcast
      @thedartmoorpodcast  5 месяцев назад +2

      Ah - very kind! I don't mean to 'throw any shade' (as the kids say) at the bushcraft community, it's just that I'm too busy birding, exploring, or filming to complicate my camping. That said, I'd like to try a bowdrill myself at some point - I bet it's a real sense of achievement - maybe I'll set myself a challenge if it ever stops raining later this year!

    A Shemag is also a towel if you need one in summer, or a picnic blanket or seat cushioning or a makeshift packing bundle when something happened to your backpack. It's got so many uses.
    Unfortunately you got to pay attention to the choice of colour and pattern with these things nowadays to not provoke assumed political associations which really aren't there for me in the first place. But in the woods you'll be fine, I guess. :-)

    I was thinking, say stick first George go on and you did 😁🤣😂. I'm so with you on the stick, I have my Father's thumb stick that has been all over Dartmoor (and beyond with me), it has been my saviour many times (very handy for checking depths of potential swim spots as well as everything else), but now I find it heavy to carry and I can't stash it if i don't want it and I am afraid that it is now semi retired in favour of two nasty (they aren't nasty at all) hiking poles (better for my shoulders I'm afraid) although I might bring it out again in the summer when we will be swimming again. I love it. I also love my arse bag (what great names) for camping, we pitched up and wanted to go swimming and rather than leave phone etc with our tent I just took my fanny pack (another great name 🤣), also useful in the summer when shorts don't have enough pockets 😁

    • @ChrisSmith-vc7xs
      @ChrisSmith-vc7xs 5 месяцев назад

      To answer only the tad bit of serious I detected: is the stick surviving what you are putting it through, and can it hold your weight? I think I have had only 4 "real" walking sticks through my life besides the impromptu pick-up of a given day because they lasted up until their demise, and two of them are still in the house with me.
      1- dogwood, died at a scout camp being mistaken for firewood.
      2- cedar sapling, still in use, but became so adorned with medals I loathe to lose it in the woods
      3- saguaro cactus spine, rugged, slender, and strong; served me well in the desert through a multitude of terrain, but I couldn't legally bring it home (a stick so good I still remember it from 2011)
      3- crape myrtle branch, still in use and one heck of a strong wood used for all sorts of trails and smacking things.

    • @thedartmoorpodcast
      @thedartmoorpodcast  5 месяцев назад

      Ha! I have gone through quite a lot of sticks as I tend to lose them, but this trusty companion has lasted a good while.
      I *think* this one's just a birch sapling I found which filled the criteria of being fairly straight and didn't look too healthy (so I didn't feel bad about cutting it down). It would have been a nice summer afternoon sitting by the river stripping the bark off and sanding it down, but nothing more than that.

    • @thedartmoorpodcast
      @thedartmoorpodcast  5 месяцев назад

      Sound like good sticks! I'm so bad at looking after stuff that I tend to focus on them just being the right size and relatively straight rather than the wood type, as I accept they probably won't last that long anyway. That said, this one has survived a good long while - at least three years - and is made of birch, which isn't considered a particularly good wood for the job.

    Hi, watched a few of your videos and liked , nearly didn't bother watching this one as it was a review video but glad I did , I burst out laughing at that tarp, I thought you were going to say it was your first ever tarp, I wasn't expecting the piece of shit comment, at this point my 15 year old son came to see what was so funny , we then laughed at you chucking your saw, fire stick and axe away and laughed again when you said that you don't drink your own piss. At this point I said to my son that I think you are an English teacher from previous videos and said that I would have loved to have someone like you teaching at my school and although you probably don't speak like that in class, kids would find it hilarious if you did, my son also said he'd like you as his English teacher , that coming from someone who doesn't like school !
    I am also now aware that I am typing to an English teacher and have probably put commas, exclamation marks and various other things in the wrong place, twinned with no doubt some ridiculous predicted texts I haven't noticed , oh well !!!;;/:"' ,

    Your pack is too low on your back eliminating your basic pace speed. Adjust it above your hips to regain your basic pace speed. Your pack is too deep causing excess side to side thrusting generating wasted energy and increased fatigue. If you need to carry that much gear then perhaps you could add shoulder strap compartments which aid in altering your center of gravity forward to increase your stride, conserving energy, increasing endurance and reduce fatigue. Reducing the depth of your pack if you have or add pack depth restraint rope. The backpack has 5 to 8 bio-mechanical inefficiencies which reduces speed, endurance & safety and increases waste energy and fatigue for about a 20% loss of potential efficiency.

    • @thedartmoorpodcast
