Just happened on your videos today. This will be the third video of yours I watched. I usually don’t write comments after two or three videos because I think it’s important to have a little bit of a baseline for the person who’s creating their content. However, this one has struck me very very hard. I lost my wife in a car accident in 2011. The first time we went camping together, we’d known each other for about a month and a half. So when we were getting ready to lay down for the night, I told her I would go outside the tent and brush my teeth and make sure everything was put away, and the fire was out. She smiled and I crawled out. Gave her about 10 minutes to herself, and when she had stopped rustling round, I asked if she was ok with me coming back in or if she needed some more time. Told me to come back in, and I was greeted by her beaming smile, and beautiful face that was looking back at me from inside a onesie pajama suit very similar to what you’re wearing. She’s been gone so long, but I’m crying now, and remembering how much I miss her. But as sad as I am, you made me remember something that at the time I thought was adorable, but it turned into one of the most lasting memories I have. Thank you for this, and I’m sorry about the novel. Just couldn’t see this and not say it.
Nice video. I am sure I am repeating what others have said about the fuel not catching light, but I believe the issue is that with very cold temperatures the fuel is not creating much vapour to catch alight with the sparks from your flint. The warmer it is, the more vapours to catch light. As you said in the video, a match of gas lighter would have probably worked to warm the fuel and creat the vapours to light.
You are right about the cold fuel not being able to vaporize. Take a small piece of carbon felt with you that circles the perimeter of the inside of the Trangia then put your fuel in. Then take a mini lighter and light the carbon felt after the fuel has moved up into the felt via capillary action.
A tip I learned: Those single use handwarmers are a great way to dry out damp boots/socks overnight while one sleeps. Place one warmer per boot, add a damp sock on top of it inside the boot, and then plug the open boot with another dry sock or hat, etc... by the morning you should not only have dry boots and socks, but they'll be toasty warm as well. Those single use warmers last approximately 8 hrs if you keep them air-restricted.
The one use hand warmers I left in my gloves which I store in thermal bag, keeps bits n bobs when I hike. The single use hand warmers stayed hot 3 days. Winter was only cold enough once to use and I use them with ski mittens that are leather. Claire I've not yet had courage to winter camp yet. After I got disabled. Can't wait for spring Temps! What do you use to keep your teeth so brilliant white? Thank you so much for you Claire! The amazing gift of your videos. You do time lapse star photography/ too much light pollution where I live. Have to go back to planetarium again. Love stars, constellations! Never knew see Milky-way will naked eye. Wow!
I did my camping in the 70s, Canvas tents that weighed a ton or nylon that leaked, I was never warm, I love his channel , it must be nice to be toasty in a tent.
first impulse was to say "girl, you have balls." But...we are awesome woman, we dont need balls. we have freacking courage. I am a motocycle camper, and i loooove you confidence and your content, awesome taht you do all of this alone. love that.
GOOD EVENING CLAIRE AND CONGRADULATIONS. I love watching your adventures camping. Yes spirit stove or alcohol stoves much harder to light when near freezing or colder. I always just light a scrape of paper, or a dry leaves or grass. Then put them in the centre with the fuel. It soon sorted it self out to the flames . Take care
I went hiking in the mountains in northern Sweden in autumn, first time I had a lighter sleeping bag but it was a bit cold in it, the temp was about 2-4°C, even with a bivvy bag, next time I had a proper winter down sleeping bag, but then it was too warm so I woke up sweaty in the middle of the night. We had lightweight solo tents. Always have matches with you! Light it then put it in the middle of the burner. You could take some birch bark and put in the middle when lighting up the stove.
Loved your use pot a onesie for warmth. Trangias are known for lighting issues when in cold temps so you did the right thing. Have a wonderful festive season. Atvb Malcolm 🏴
Love the onesie bear suit, i havent grinned for 15min straight in a long time. You have an amazing energy and positivity about you and i hope all your dreams come true. Cheers from Canada
Whe using my trangia in the cold, I do a couple of things that seem to help. Firstly, spill a little meths on the lip around the outside and light it first, this helps to heat the stove up. Secondly, I swirl the meths around inside to coat the walls as much as possible, this seems to light a lot better. I also use a lighterand just hold the flame in the stove until it catches. I used to have problems using my trangia in the cold but never have issues now following these steps.
I just loved your Baloo joke, I had just said to my carer, "Imagine if you saw her, dressed like that in the woods", and then you go and do the "Bare Necessities" song, then get doiwn on all four paws and exit stage left! Brilliant. Christmas one next. 🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸
Claire, you are crazy... 😊😊please don't ever change. You're a beautiful soul just as you are. If any one tries to change you then walk on by and just be you xx
You have inspired me sure. I’ve never backed and going on my trip in a week. Thank You for making interesting and look so fun. You’re an Angel that has the gift to uplift individuals to believe in themselves. God Bless
Hi, just wanted to say how much peace and tranquillity I get from watching your videos,I spent most of my time up to 15 years ago in forests and woodlands, building shelters and spending nights in them, they really are my happy place,I've never spent time anyway else that gave me as much of a claim and blissful feeling, unfortunately I haven't been able to for a long time now coz I have a disability that causes bad mobility issues and pain, but it's ok life can change and we adapt, but watching your videos give me a part of the calmness I used to feel being close to nature, so thanks for that, spread the love
I am so happy I found your channel, your voice is so so smoothing when you explain what you're doing lol, you are a very lucky young lady to be doing what you are doing, I wish you and your partner all the best
50K! Your adventures got me and my daughter through lockdown. We’d be so low and then watch you living life and just being the complete vibe we needed to get out of our own heads. Congratulations and thank you, again.
I know one thing for sure. I will be adding my bear onzie to my winter camping kit. ....... It had never crossed my mind until now. Genius idea 👍 ......Oh and Congratulations on the Fiddy thousand 🍾🌹X
You are an amazing woman. Always happy, full of energy and enthusiasm. Claire sweetheart, you are an inspiration to so many and definitely an inspiration to myself. Many thanks Claire.
Another little trick is to heat up the meths by popping a twig into the meths stove for a few seconds, lighting the stick and popping it back into the stove at an angle. It will heat up the meths and rhe brass and then catch the fuel alight, then just remove the stick. You can do the same with a dead leaf too if long enough. Love the clean fresh air
Get a jet lighter. Nothing lights stoves better. The problem with cigarette lighters is that they are designed to light a cigarette above them, not a stove below them so you are right it’s a funny angle. Ferro rods have hot sparks but they don’t last long and won’t heat the vapour enough before ignition. Soto Micro torch with the angled head is ideal. Don’t mess about with sticks, bits of paper etc. You can also use the jet to heat the burner which in turn heats the alcohol. Very easy to light alcohol stoves even in extreme low temps and high wind. You might also notice there is well on the top of the Trangia. Dribble a few drops of alcohol over the top and into the well. Lighting then becomes very easy. Remember the Swedish military use them so they are fine in really low temps. Much better than gas below zero. I have lit them at -20 in Sweden no issues.
If you go down in the woods today. You will find a very happy girl with 50k subscribers. Congratulations Claire 👏 Never stop what your doing. Always been fabulous following your adventures, take care and enjoy everything
You said 50k but it has shot up to 51.8k, not long until you get your 100,000k Plaque. The way you are going you will be there by Summer if not before. Congratulations!!! Here's to the next 50k. I'm so glad I found your channel as I'm one of the people you have inspired to get out there!!!❤😎
thank you wonderful girl myself and my late wife used to go camping and all year round all over uk and France but the last 5 years after a stroke not able to walk more than a 100 yards with out stopping you always make me smile on your outing mmm thank you very much bobby xx
You are so natural Claire, a breath of fresh air with your excitement of life, together with some humour you nail it every time. I'm not surprised you have so many subscribers. Looking forward to the next video 🙂
Well prepared Claire again with eleventy-two layers of toasty! The hand-warmers are a good addition, I used to use Jon-E hand warmers, one each, to keep my Bean Boots warm enough to put on again in the AM. I keep waiting for The Lady of the Lake to rise out of that pond....
Congratulations Claire on 50k & here I am watching a month later and you’re almost at 55k!! So pleased I found your channel this year, it’s really cheered me & Ive enjoyed the escape its given me to the outdoors whilst I’m not able to do so
Thank you Claire for putting a smile on my face. It's such a delight watching the amazing vids you do. Congratulations on all the people watching and following you.
Wow, 51.2k subs as I write this, that deserves a massive congrats and well done to you Claire. You've come such a long way right from when you first started. You always show that beautiful zest for life which I love about you, always great content aswell. Keep going Claire you're an inspiration to others.already looking forward to your next vid x
Lovely video again Claire. I've woken up on a camp to frost and there's something magical about it when everywhere is glittery. Congratulations on 50k subs, it's totally deserved. Your videos are always a joy to watch. x
Hi Alex, thank you so much 🥰 ahh yeh I absolutely love the cold, so fresh and pretty. I do struggle with my fingers & toes but the handwarmers are amazing for that. Happy new year to you, hope its a great one for you 💚🌿
Your flash point is lowered in cold temps. You need to used a combustible or find some thing to warm the liquid to raise the temperature of the liquid. Can I say I’m a man who suffers from sever depression and spend 90% of my life very low. I find you enthusiasm and energy both amazing and lifting. Thank you for the gift you are sharing. Love and peace to you.
Great to see you out & about this time of year especially when everything is so fresh & crispy. Lets hope many more nights out over the next few months, winter is a great time. Keep snug, have fun 🙂
Hi Claire, don't know if it's already been suggested but with the Trangia you could roll up a bit of tissue tightly and use it like a wick. Once it's soaked up some fuel it'll light easily with a lighter.
Well done Claire, a massive congratulations on your achievements and thanks for taking us on your journey, keep up the good work and loving what you do, all hail to queen of the wild ones 👑👸🐻
Lesson learned, eh? Alcohol stoves are not cold weather stoves. It's the fuel vapor that burns, not the liquid fuel. The problem comes when the ambient temperature drops below the alcohol vaporization level. Trangia sells a stove priming tray that clips on the bottom of the stove. Pour a little fuel in the tray and light it in order to warm up the stove and attempt to light the stove, again. Additionally, alcohol produces substantially less heat than other fuels, so gas pressure stoves are (generally) a better choice for cold weather. That all said, I love my Trangia for its quiet operation and ease of use, so I'm loathe to put it away come winter.
And other possible explanation is that when it’s cold, the alcohol vapor might not rise fast enough out of the burner, and the you do not get enough oxygen into it to get combustion. I had an Origo alcohol stove in my sailboat, and sometimes I had to blow lightly into the burner before I tried to light it. That forced some oxygen into the burner, and then there where no problems lighting it.
Always loved camping as a youngster, sometimes in the local woods but never far from home! Now that the kids have left home and I'm coming up for retirement, theres something in me watching your videos that makes me think I'd love to go wild camping, not sure if I'm too old now tho! Loving the videos!
Westy you're never too old! Get out there and give it a go 😍 Don't have to go far, sometimes I only walk half a mile for my little local ones, just nice to be out in nature for a bit. Have the best 2022 and happy adventuring.. let us know how you get on :D Claire
Sometimes RUclips puts random stuff like this on my recommended page. and this time I have to thank youtube for doing a great job, love this. now I want to go camping in the woods
Congrats on the 50k subs! Another great vid. My wife and I swear by the Hot Hands (and Hot Feet which are designed to fit in socks whilst walking). They take about 20 minutes usually to get warm (as I'm sure you've now learnt) but they last for around 6-8 hours if they're in a pocket. I usually stick them in some pockets near my waist at night and they help keep my core toasty. During the day they live in my gloves so any time I have to take them off they're still warm when I put them back on. Good idea with the bag to prop up the sleeping mat. I dislike laying flat sometimes and have never thought of that for some reason. 😊
Hi Matt, thank you :D I'm using hot hands in this video, although I put them in my socks, they worked a treat! And then used the Zippo for my actual hands haha. Merry Christmas to you 🌲🎅 Claire
@@WildBeare I saw! You actually prompted me to buy one of those Zippo hand warmers. I'd seen them before, but never really "in the wild" (ha, get it? I'm hilarious!). Watching how it worked, and you seeming so happy with how it worked convinced me. 😁 Merry Christmas to you too, and all the best for the new year ❤️
Trangia’s burn the vapours off the meths, not the meths itself. The colder it is, the less vapours are coming off it making it harder to light. As you learned, warming it up a bit or using a wick can help get it going. Once it’s lit it’s fine. Keep being you, Claire and congrats on the 50k. Xxx
Heyy ahh is that what it is, makes sense :D thanks for sharing, I was a bit confused at first as I didn't realise the temperature makes a difference 😄 yeh it was fine once it got going. Thank you so much :) 💚
@@WildBeare you’re always welcome. Glad to see you back out locally again. Lot of bugs going about our area at the moment. Take care, hope you and your young one have a great Yule. Much love, Kelly. X
Hello from Canada, I love you channel! You are always so cheery no matter what weather conditions you are in. Always a joy to watch your videos. Would love to know the story behind that floofy bear suit though lol.
Hellooo from England! :D Your country looks sooo beautiful, I hope I get to travel there one day. Thank you so much, so glad you like them, I love to make them :) No story really, just thought I'd be a bear for 50k subs haha 🐻 Merry Christmas to you! Claire
subbed, winter is my fave time of year, the cold, sky and enviroment, really gives me a feeling of being connected to nature and the universe, that we are just on a ball hurtling through space :)
Merry Christmas to you can't wait till your next video, I am sorry about the fact you can't get a dog yet, but your still special to me, keep your dreams alive, keep doing what you do. Enjoy God world . I wish I could not much to do in Las Vegas NV it all dessert 🍪🎂 I love the out doors your lucky you live in a country that has 🌴🎄 and grass not hear all dessert. Unless you go up north. Strip not that great enjoy your world, with all the beautiful trees water, grass, and rain. That's why I 💕 watching you you are a beautiful wonderful woman, you make me smile. Thank you.
As you mentioned; everyone sleeps differently. Some naturally warmer than others. We layer our cold weather clothing tho adjust to the temperatures so it makes sense to layer in the bag to accomplish the same thing. The air-activated hand warmer gets up to 140 degrees F (60 C). They work good for heating the fuel in your stove. I have used them to warm small propane tanks and to keep food from freezing while winter camping. Love the teddy bear suit!!
Congratulations on your 50 Grand Wild Ones!!! I loved your "onesie"! You cracked me up at the end with your back-scratching and walking off camera on all-fours! Hahahahaha! Thank you for the Joy, the peace and serenity you have brought to my life and to the lives of countless others--well, over 50 THOUSAND others!!! Long life to you and a very Merry Christmas, Claire! ❤❤❤
Hi Russell, thank you so much :) It was fun to be a bear 😄🐻Next time it's real cold I'll probably be freezing without the onesie haha. Aw I am so very glad you like it, I love to make these and I'm so grateful that they are enjoyed by others 💚 Merry Christmas to you and yours! Claire
Omg I've been thinking this since I found Claire! These two would be an absolute laugh together! XD Both such infectiously positive people who never fail to cheer me up when I'm feeling rough! Please let's make it happen!
All flammable liquids have what's called a "flashpoint" temperature . If the fuel you are using goes below this temp it will never light. The flashpoint should be on the info sheet of the fuel or on the can. So maybe for winter you should use a different fuel. Hope this helps you "wild one".
Thanks Dug, I had no idea this was a thing! I'm using Biofire, there's nothing about a flashpoint on the label though so I don't know what it is. I think it'll be fine through winter if I can warm it a little & use matches instead of the ferro rod. Cheers & have a lovely day! Claire
@@WildBeare Guessing that Biofire is Ethanol, their flashpoint is 13º (55ºF). Anyway the usual workaround is just what you did, put the alcohol bottle near you body for get the alcohol warmed, and use matches or lighters.
WOW 50 K subs Claire,it's not that long ago I congratulated you on 40 K subs! Please keep the videos coming through the long nights of winter.👍merry Christmas

I understand your hardship. Last night my foot came out of my comforter and my toes got cold. Luckily I survived.
Congratulations on the mile stone. The woods are absolutely beautiful this time of year. Cannot think of a better way to spend the winter months
Thanks Robb :) they are aren't they, I love winter, my hands don't like the cold but if I can work that out it's a gorgeous time to be out
Nice down trousers need some of them bad boy's
Congratulations on the 50K+ subscribers, Claire!...you ARE inspiring, love your vlogs and your sense of adventure! Merry Christmas :)

Great to see you out & about this time of year especially when everything is so fresh & crispy. Lets hope many more nights out over the next few months, winter is a great time. Keep snug, have fun 🙂
Thanks Chris, love the cold :)
So beautiful, your night photography. Ohh, a pretty Christmastree in the Nature. Cool.😍😍
Hi Claire, don't know if it's already been suggested but with the Trangia you could roll up a bit of tissue tightly and use it like a wick. Once it's soaked up some fuel it'll light easily with a lighter.
Amazing, thanks Andy! I may try this :) Merry Christmas to you 🌲🌲
@@WildBeare Didn't you use a lighter to light your fuel hand warmer! Love the inspiring videos 🙂
The elements ...I love the challenge...injoy your time.. 🌛🏴🌜
Congrats with 50K subs Claire! Your bubbling personallity and love for nature makes your vids a joy to behold.

Your the cutest bear I've ever seen in the woods. David.x
With the setup that she had, it looks like she could have spilled some fuel on the top and sides of the stove and lit it that way
Another know it all.....
You did great. Cold air is the bomb. Enjoy the great outdoors and stay well be safe.
Always loved camping as a youngster, sometimes in the local woods but never far from home! Now that the kids have left home and I'm coming up for retirement, theres something in me watching your videos that makes me think I'd love to go wild camping, not sure if I'm too old now tho! Loving the videos!
Never too old Westy.
Westy you're never too old! Get out there and give it a go 😍 Don't have to go far, sometimes I only walk half a mile for my little local ones, just nice to be out in nature for a bit. Have the best 2022 and happy adventuring.. let us know how you get on :D Claire
Never too old mate! Grab a tent and get out there, such a great experience
😁 Merry Christmas to you too, and all the best for the new year ❤️
Love your enthusiasm and sense of humour. Congratulations on 51k and counting subs. ; )
Also like alcohol you can shake it to get the vapors
Love your bear outfit! Too cute! Great videos. Congratulations!
Claire
@@WildBeare Lots of places for adventures here in Canada. Merry Christmas to you as well :)
subbed, winter is my fave time of year, the cold, sky and enviroment, really gives me a feeling of being connected to nature and the universe, that we are just on a ball hurtling through space :)
50k... wow no... AWESOME 👌
Well done Claire
Worth every sub
Ps... Great vid as always 😎👍
Pps.... hexi blocs for cold weather 👍
Claire
I found two amazing people who got me through bad times wildbeare and haze outdoors a collab would be great
Omg I've been thinking this since I found Claire! These two would be an absolute laugh together! XD Both such infectiously positive people who never fail to cheer me up when I'm feeling rough! Please let's make it happen!
That last bear rub on the tree lol: You cheeky get!
Claire
@@kirkhamandy also a good idea thanks :D
@@WildBeare Guessing that Biofire is Ethanol, their flashpoint is 13º (55ºF).
Anyway the usual workaround is just what you did, put the alcohol bottle near you body for get the alcohol warmed, and use matches or lighters.

WOW 50 K subs Claire,it's not that long ago I congratulated you on 40 K subs! Please keep the videos coming through the long nights of winter.👍merry Christmas
