To Autumn - The Dartmoor Podcast Episode Forty Three
The Romantic Poets might not have visited Dartmoor, but that's their loss - they'd have loved it! A video that caters to the incredibly small overlap in the Venn diagram of Dartmoor Podcast* watchers and GCSE students studying John Keats.

I saw a brown big cat almost 40 years ago in the woods near plymbridge, i was not alone i was with my dad and we stood and watched it for a while. The tree's were torn up just as a cat would stretch up and claw at something. We were close enough to be 100 percent sure it was a cat. There are many stories of cats being released onto the moors when the laws changed. I have to assume these must have bred to have lasted so long

My sainted mother loved Keats and all the romantic poets (despite all the naughtiness they got up to and she was a very prim woman!). The only poetry I can stomach is Eliot (oddly I suppose) we studied Eliot for A'Levels (showing my age!) and I have to confess that the Wasteland can still bring me out in goosepimples (oddly too, my two old english 'mistresses' ended up living between Yelverton and Princetown despite the fact I was at school on the Isle of Wight! I bumped into them in the loos in Morrisons in Tavi many years ago!). But I enjoyed your rendition and of course your podcast (not a podcast!) as ever, entertaining.

Did some more digging and as far as I can tell, the first tin box to house a visitors book wasn't placed at CP until some point between 1887-1912, so after Dickens' death. That said though, I've never been to see the archive, so aren't certain of how far the books go.

I can still remember, after all these years, one of my teachers shaking his head at this poem's "sinister" last line before lamenting "poor old Johnny Keats!" The lesson took place in the unfamiliar and cramped music room at the very top of an austere Victorian building. Lesson over, I stumbled down the winding, gloomy, precipitous stairway and out into the sunlit courtyard. Something happened! An epiphanic moment? A revelation? Something mystical? Many, many years later I would write a poem ( with a few embellishments) about the experience and, more recently, have made a video too. It's called 'Tracing Paper' and it would please me no end if you were able to see it. I was gleefully told by someone recently that my video appears to have gone more 'bacterial' than 'viral' but I remain uncertain as to whether this is a good or a bad thing? One day, I'd like to see what you can do with what I think is Keats' greatest Ode - To A Nightingale; or with one of the most bewitching ballads in the English language - La Belle Dame Sans Merci. This is yet another one of your masterpieces, George. Your students are very lucky indeed.

Queue jumping on the top of Snowdon George 🤨...are you sure it's not your 14th birthday? 😉😁 Still, what a fine way to celebrate your midway point, and despite being half Welsh, I like the look of Dartmoor Snowdon better, or at least I did until you camped under a Hawthorne tree 👀😳... you're so lucky you didn't get carted off by the Little People!! 😮 (didn't you notice how verdant the grass was around that tree? ...they look after their 'spots' you know 🤫) At least you had your trusty stick with you on Dartmoor Snowdon...I had visions of it refusing to go, having missed out on Welsh Snowdon 😁...lucky for you it had the hotel mini bar to drown its sorrows in 🙊 Happy 40th again, and thank you for the picturesque podcasts 🙏 Oh, and the longer you live, the less silly 'the Prisoner' seems to be 🤭...Port Marion probably has a lot more to it than you realise 🤔🙈🙉🙊

@@h.bsfaithfulservant4136 I bloody love The Prisoner, and was like a giddy kid running about Portmerion! I'm always trying to mildly antagonise the pixies in the hope that I might see one... so far I just seem to get lost a lot!

Oh yes, Port Merion 🤭...not Marion 🙄. I used to be good at spelling! You're right, I need to rewatch it 👍... I'll see so much more in it now. I think your tribute was excellent ✌️... let's hope the Pixies can't find you when you get lost, as us humans are prone to do 🙈

Wonderful and funny video, i'm an keen forager and fungi enthusiasts, and was interested to know where you found the Liberty caps, as I would very much like to photograph them. Thanks Rambles

Excellent idea! These were found up near Hunter's Tor above Lustleigh Cleave, but if you want to make sure you find lots and lots of them to take loads of photos, then I suggest the area around Nun's Cross Farm and Eylesbarrow Tin Mines.
