    BRO... you nailed every aspect of the Fish perfectly.
    Age 75, been surfing Florida waves since age 11 in 1961. Fish is my choice 90% of the time.

    Great video! Having the right board for the surf is something I completely underestimated. I had a 6’2” glazer. It had enough volume but I think the shape was all wrong for me and the waves I was surfing. Now I have a 5’8” seaside that works great if it’s got a little more power and a 6’2” sweet potato for the really mushy stuff.

    I bought the seaside on your advice and I have never looked back. It has pretty much been the only board I’ve ridden for the last 3 months. Thanks bro 🤙

      Great to hear Dom, stoked you like the board! It took me a few surfs to adjust and get comfortable, but I agree, I hardly get off of it now.

    Hey Ryan, thanks for another great post. What's your experience of mail order boards? Do they arrive undamaged, no dings? Is this risky?

    • @TheSurfersJourney

      Hi Andy, I don't have any experience with that unfortunately. I guess all boards have to be shipped at some point, usually they are packaged very well with bubble wrap, etc...What board are you looking at?

    Thanks for all the great info about how beneFISHial it is to get a fish! I'm looking to upgrade from my Wavestorm 5'6 Original New Modern Swallow Tail which has been a bit of a struggle when the waves are fat, small and mushy. Super fun for barrel-hunting on bigger days, but those are less common at the beach break I surf. Just trying to figure out what dimensions would make sense for me in a fish model. I'm 5' 10" and 183lbs, intermediate level, been surfing about 10 years vacation-style, so only about a month of the year I get to surf daily. I did a ton of skateboarding growing up, so you mentioning that fish boards feel loose like a skateboard is attractive. Twin setup sounds great. What dimensions would you suggest? Thanks!

      Maybe look at the 5'6 in this model Ryan, or even a 5'7. Try before you buy if possible!

      @@TheSurfersJourney Thanks Ry! Hey - how should we think about helium boards vs standard epoxy? Would a 35L helium have the same float as like a 40L epoxy or is it not that dramatic? Also, I'm curious about your recommendation on such low volume for me. The 5' 6" Seaside has 32.7L volume and I'm currently struggling to get into mushy waves on a 41L 5' 6" Wavestorm foamy. Does the board really perform that much better that I'd be able to sacrifice the volume or should I double down and go for the 5' 11" 41L just to be safe? Unfortunately, I'm gonna be ordering this thing online, so no option to try before I buy 😥 Thanks so much for your wisdom 🙏

      If you’re struggling to get into waves on the wave storm, you need to go up in length and volume. Go for 6’+ and 50L. Every liter lightens you about 2lbs of weight. So going down in liters won’t work on any board for mushy waves. Basic physics. What you gain in wave catching ability, you lose in maneuverability. So there’s a tradeoff. But it’s moot if you’re not catching waves to begin with. . Also my rule of thumb is that if you’re not catching more than half the waves you paddle for, you need to go up in size. This takes into account crowded lineups etc. if everyone is on longboards and you show up on a shortboard, you’re likely in for a tough session. 😅
      Also for frame of reference I’m 5’10 and 140 lbs. for mushy tiny waves I ride minimum 40L to 50L boards as twin fin. Take out the center thruster fun. It’s faster and more fun. I surf year round and I’m paddle fit riding everything from mush to double overhead. Normally on a 5’10 29L shortboard for most conditions.

    I have a 5’9 seaside which I do enjoy
    I have been using Machado quad set
    Have you tried any other fin sets ? Either twin like a AMK or maybe a different quad set ?
    Thx

    Hi, I'm a good beginner surfer that uses every opportunity to travel to surf sites given the fact that we don't have the possibility to surf in my country. Your videos and surfskating ease the waiting period in between. Have you already done or plan to do a video on picking surfboards depending on the surfer's lvl and size? I know it's not an easy task, but this problem seemd a bit overwhelming. For example, I'm 6 feet and 75 kg, what length and buoyancy of fish would you recommentd? Keep up the great work :)

      Hi Roman, thanks for your feedback, I am happy to hear our content is helping. There is one coming actually but you are right, it is a tricky topic with many variables. It will be up in the next few weeks...In regards your question, if you want to use volume as a starting point, you could try looking around the 30 to 35litre mark. Do some research on what is out there and might suit the waves you want to surf it in. If you can find one second hand that is always cheaper, and if you get it slightly wrong, you haven't lost lots of money...

    Hey Ryan, I’ve been learning to surf for about 18 months riding an 8 foot EPS single fin and would like to move down to a fish shape soon. I am 6’2 and 95kg, what size do you think I should get a fish shaped board in? Something around my height or should I add a few inches and get something like a 6’4/6’6 fish shaped board with 45-50L of volume?

    • @TheSurfersJourney
      @TheSurfersJourney  2 года назад +1

      Hi Lincoln, it is always an exciting time when you start looking at new boards. Sounds like you are on the right track with those length and volume. What is your fitness and skill level like?

    • @lincolnsmith245
      @lincolnsmith245 2 года назад +1

      @@TheSurfersJourney hi Ryan, thanks for your reply. I’d say I’m an advanced beginner, I can read the waves, paddle out and ride down the line/turn. No radical moves though. Without getting ahead of myself I’d say I’m above average fitness, if I’m not surfing i am either lifting weights or doing some sort of cardio. Unfortunately the weights is why im on the heavier side so finding something with enough volume is a challenge.

      @@lincolnsmith245 I'm with ya Lincoln, its funny that in surfing - a little more muscle is a liability. If I could go back to my 18 year old body and fitness, (5' 10" 155lbs) that's probably my peak physical condition for surfing. But in terms of overall functional strength and fitness, my 37 year old self would absolutely dominate my 18 year old self in every other sport I care about.
