Wow. What blows me away the most is how you manage to keep your spirits so high and light hearted, especially when suffering with ankle pain so early on for such a long race. That's a gift and incredible strength to possess! Amazing achievement, you should be really proud of yourself Cody! Hope you keep making these race videos, you're an inspiration to watch and it's cool to follow your journey!
@@krilin84 I’m still figuring a lot of things out physically and nutritionally, but one of my strengths is definitely my mindset. Thanks for watching and for commenting - lately I’ve been wondering if I should keep making videos and this shut those thoughts right up! Thanks!
@@midwest_menace cool! yeah, trying out drink mix carbs is probably worth while - good way to get proper amounts of sodium in too. I really like 1-2 scoops of Tailwind coupled with 250-500mg extra sodium/0.5L of water in the summer (makes for about 1500mg of sodium/L). Combining that with the Precision Fuel PF90 gel-pouches is really handy to manage your carb intake depending on thirst, I find!
That's an insane distance to run Cody. Running that kind of distance takes incredible endurance and mental fortitude. I hope someday I'll become as good of a runner as you man. Keep up the amazing work and hope all goes well for you.
Dude, been low-key following you for a bit now. Your videos are awesome. Very few carry a camera and film like you do. I did Leadville back years ago, and that was one hell of an experience. You have the potential to really be in the grouping of top ultra guys in the country. Is this your goal? Would love to see you run some races like Javelina... you'd be flyin'. No sponsorships yet?? You are one hell of a talent man
To follow up, I checked the Leadville results and see you got 13th place and are a mere 4 hours from beating the record set by that Roche guy. Frigging awesome. I think you can get it next year with a couple adaptions to your race regime. First, the new shirt, which we already discussed. Second, more petroleum jelly and talc for those particular areas. Third, you need to be able to take a good dump before the race starts. I have heard that eating a certain food will induce that BM you need. Its called an In-n-Out Burger. Probably best to leave off the onions. Cheers.
@@malcolm20091000 haha I’ll be sure to pound some in n out the night before. A high quality pre race dump would have worked wonders. I definitely hope I get another crack at it next year - the lottery system is just so broken it’ll be a miracle if I get in. 🤞🤞
Cody, you are clearly a talented young runner - this finish shows that in spades. I hope you can get a good coach who can help you shed some of your chaos and get in a disciplined mode. Telling us your stomach is troubling you while struggling to get down a Krispy Kreme is just one example. With the right coaching and organization you could be running up front in all the big races. Would love to see a young gun giving folks fits up front.
@@alexsavin3173 I can do that! Wasn’t much of a plan, I just kinda make stuff up as I go but I can share what I did. Also only had about 6 weeks to prepare after getting in through the trail marathon.
Fantastic job Cody! Been waiting for your video on your race. If you're not trail pooping, and falling, you're not running hard enough!! Some suggestions: -I think you'd love a Naked Running Band, and using the Camelbak soft flask in 21oz, and tuck in either another 21oz empty or a 17oz empty, and use the 2nd flask in sections of a race where you need 2, or you want to carry water to put on your hair and shirt if it's hot. You can "holster" that empty one, between the Band and your hip, because the soft flasks are completely flat when empty. That belt you're wearing is no bueno, and it doesn't even have compartments on the front... useless. (you can see me wearing the Band, loaded, in my vids. Been using one since Feb '19) -You might like swapping in 50/50 with GU Roctane -Take a look at the way donuts are made, and the nasty oil they fry in, and maybe that's not the best for a runner's racing stomach. -Guys are having good luck with the balm used by dairy farmers on cow teets, and it's cheap. With a Naked Running Band, you could carry a small zip-lock baggy with some in it, and turn the baggy inside-out to apply it, and then zip the bag back up and stow it back in the Band for the next use. You could also carry some TP, and get that restocked at the crewed aid stations. -Would you run cooler if you took the ball cap off until you really needed it, and kept your hair wet? You've got a big head of hear, so packing that sweaty hear in under a cap, in the heat, and preventing the head from cooling... brutal. There's a huge volume of blood flow through the head, and cooling it would make you feel better. -You might find white arm sleeves are fantastic in the heat. They keep the sun off your arms, and they get sweaty (you can put creek water on them) and then your arms swinging back and forth, turn into giant radiators. Pretty amazing. Unbutton most of the shirt so it billows and allows air in on your chest, and you're golden. -Fresh, very ripe, pineapple, and peeled "cutie" tangerines are heaven. Look up the nutritional facts for both, and it's huge. They're really easy on the stomach, and they're just a ton of juice, so they are great. Carry a zip-lock baggy of them, and pick away between aid stations.
Wow. So much wealth of info here I truly appreciate it. You are very right. I saw a lot of people with the naked bands and I think that’ll be the way to go for sure. Definitely need more water as well, especially on the hope pass section so having a larger flask and a backup would be perfect. Donuts - yeah bad call on my part it won’t happen again. Especially since I got those at Walmart so they weren’t even good if I wasn’t running 100 miles lol. I have arm sleeves but they’re black so I’ll look into the white ones - makes sense to keep the sun off. I’m a huge advocate of fruit so that’ll take no convincing. And any anti chafe method is better than my current plan so I’ll try and find some of that cow lube! Thanks again for watching and for the advice. I’m still so new and learning so much and I really appreciate you!
Well, you know I'm not one to criticize, but when you are trying to place high in the Hawaiian Shirt Division, and you wear the same one as last race, that just aint gonna cut it, Cody. May I recommend the Reyn Spooner Hawaiian shirt next time? A little pricer but the cut is awesome. Oh shit, I forgot to mention - that was an amazing race you did here! I can't even think 100 miles, and your ran it. So impressive.
Yeah yeah I know but it’s the only Hawaiian shirt I have! I’ll look into Reyn and make sure I spice things up for next time! Thanks for watching! Hope you maybe start thinking about 100 miles and I’ll get to see you out there
Ibuprofen is a really bad idea in ultras. If you must, take Tylenol. At the very least research NSAID and endurance events, and if you still decide to use them at least warn your viewers.
100% agree. As an Emergency Physician I had to send an ultra race winner to get Dialysis bc his kidneys shut down. Eliminate the NSAIDs (motrin, alive, aspirin, Etc) and use Eight hour Tylenol for ultra races. If you do take them then you MUST stay hydrated.
