- And that's a wrap! Series 14 / Season 1 of Doctor Who is complete. What did I think of this CGI-laden finale? Did it deliver on its promises of satisfying answers to its season-long mystery and epic hero-vs-villain face offs? Or was it all just a giant deus ex machina? Tune in to find out!
when you're describing the trickery with ruby and her mom and even the scene from rogue, it made me think of Glass Onion and how magnificent that was. the murder scene was right there in front of you and you didn't notice it, and if you go back to watch it you can see EXACTLY what you missed the first time. sherlock had that same problem where they are 'solving' mysteries using information that the audience never got, and it makes it feel so unsatisfying.
Yeah it’s unfortunately baked into a lot of stuff the Who showrunners make. They seem to be able to tell cool, satisfying individual stories, but don’t seem to really care at all about their season-long arcs making sense. I could never get into Sherlock for that exact reason.
I continue to be impressed by the high quality of your commentary. I haven't agreed with your conclusions about every episode, although I think you nailed the finale. Whether I agree or not, though, you articulate your reasons so clearly, and your presentation is so engaging and personable, and the brief clips are so skillfully edited into the commentary, that I always come away with deeper insight into the episode. Well done. Please continue.
Oh wow, thank you so much! I'm flattered. I appreciate that you like the videos even if I come to different conclusions than you on some of them. Different points of view are the lifeblood of media discourse! I'm also always ready to hear alternate opinions in the comments, and sometimes I'm even persuaded by them. I'll definitely keep it up, genuinely enjoying making these!
@@theKtransmission - did I mention that I think you REALLY nailed the finale? It was one of the best reviews of it I read/listened to.
I love your reviews ❤ We had similar reactions to the ups and downs of the finale. I loved your description of "animal cruelty on a galactic level". Bringing death to death causing life made zero sense to me. Something else that bothered me was Ruby's reaction to her mom. I know a lot of people were touched by the scene where Ruby finally meets her mother, but her mom so did not leave her in a safe place. She left a newborn outside and alone on a cold, snowy winter night. Ruby could have easily died. Oh well, at least she's happy about it... 🤷♀️ I would absolutely love to see a deep dive on Romana!
That’s a good point, I didn’t even think about that! There were so many crazy moments in this that I think it just got lost in the shuffle. She had no idea there was even someone there to find the baby. She just straight up walks away. Of course just wait until the Doctor’s memory conveniently changes again next episode and suddenly we’re seeing her handing the baby directly to the priest lol. I’ll def do a Romana video in the near future ✌️
My mind is just very much on babies and baby safety so it sent off alarms in my brain. She could have left her at a hospital or a fire station or even INSIDE the church. Ruby is a much more forgiving human than I am because I would not thank my birth mother for leaving me to freeze to death. Anywho - can't wait for your next video!
lol that makes sense. Good to get a mother’s point of view!
I agree with everything here, though the reason Ruby could do the neck-crack is due to the ear-rings.
Oh, is that the reason? I need to rewatch, but as convenient and all-purpose as those earrings are, that actually makes sense.
Seems to be a common feeling but my fav outcome of the finale is all of the sutekh retroactive memes that came of it lol (like when any of the doctors cross paths, jack hitchhiking, etc..) otherwise it was def a bit of a let-down.. which is a shame because i love Ncuti's doctor
Yeah the memes are hilarious, this is true. Unfortunately, they’re hilarious because they’re accurately mocking a truly ludicrous story. I’m also disappointed because I wanted better for Ncuti’s first season.
WHO-wee! You always take us for quite a ride. Great review! :)
Haha thanks!
I think they handled the God of Death very badly, he's supposed to be evolved into a God. In The Pyramids of Mars Sutekh literally controlled the Doctor's mind, and that's when he was just an alien with god-like powers.
Yeah for real, his powerlessness and how easily he was defeated at the end was inexcusably bad.
So was he on board when he hit the tardis whit the hammer so is this tow sutekh
You dare to question the great and all powerful RTD? 😉
I had the exact same thought. I even had a theory that Sutekh’s soul split to form Ruby. All wrong though haha
