Classic Doctor Who Review - Genesis of the Daleks
The year was 1975. The Doctor, portrayed by Tom Baker in his first season in the role, was tearing through villains with a cheshire cat grin and a bag of jelly babies. Little did he know he was about to be called into action by his people, the Time Lords, for a mission of the highest imaginable stakes. Little did the showrunners know they were about to create one of the most iconic and memorable Doctor Who stories of all time, featuring a villain who would become one of the most popular and famous villains in Who history. Join me as I dissect this all-time great story of Daleks and the man who made them. Does it still hold up all these years later? Watch to find out!

    My list is very similar. 57 Yards is a classic to me. I think Boom inches out Rogue for me unless on a re-watch it doesn’t. I think I like Dot and Bubble more than you, but I still have it fourth. I actually really like the Devil’s chord. I see it as like a lost 60’s Batman episode, but I find a lot of joy and fun in that episode. I’m a huge Beatles fan and because of the altered time world it is placed into I don’t mind not getting more out of that element or characters. I feel like they are changed by the reality they are in. I think it is one of the most fun episodes in a long time even though it is heavily flawed. I definitely like all 5 of those with the top 3 being very good. Then I have Ruby Road which I think is pretty mid-level average. Then I would put The Legend of Ruby in 7th (it would have been higher if the finale had paid it off because I love the time window sequence-That was gripping story telling). I think I got to put Space Babies 8th because it is lower-mid but it’s kind of harmless and seems geared for kids, and it didn’t upset me the way the finale did. I would give that finale a D-. It has some nice character moments that save it from an F because of how insulting it is to fans who are trying to figure out the “mystery” and for wasting one of the great villains of the shows history. Thanks for your thoughtful reviewing. I look forward to seeing your takes on Classic era eps and the 2005 revival.

    • @theKtransmission
      @theKtransmission 3 месяца назад

      Thanks so much for the thoughtful comments! You know, framing the Devil’s Chord like a 60’s throw-back akin to Batman actually sells it a bit for me. I love the self-aware high-camp of 60’s Batman. I’ll have to rewatch with that in mind, maybe I’ll enjoy it more. I think Dot and Bubble is growing on me a bit, and I do respect and appreciate different opinions on it. Totally feel you on the D- finale. I may have been too lenient because it does anger me a bit more every time I think about it lol. It’s definitely Insulting to the fans’ intelligence.

    This was an awesome way to wrap up the season. I loved the Sutekh/dog song mashup 🤣 I really hope that there is something special about Ruby that is revealed in season two. Right now it's giving very strong Lost vibes where they draw you in trying to figure out the mysteries only to have it end with no explanations at all. I agree that Ncuti cried way too much throughout the season. It definitely lost its impact each time it happened. Overall, I did like him as the Doctor. I can't wait for your next review, whatever it may be! Great job!

    • @theKtransmission
      @theKtransmission 3 месяца назад

      Thanks so much! Yeah Lost is a great comparison. It totally has that JJ Abrams improvised mystery box feel about it. Ironic since RTD has publicly stated that he made Ruby normal in response to the way JJ Abrams ended up making Rey the granddaughter of Palpatine. Looks like he missed the point. People didn’t like that not just because it was yet another “chosen one” story, but because it completely contradicted everything they showed in the previous film. I’ll get more stuff up as soon as possible no worries, and thanks for watching!

    Dr Who this season suffered the same fate that Star Trek Discovery Season 5 suffered, the abbreviated season lengths. The story lines do not have time to breathe and allow the slow moments that build characters. Those are two shows that need at least 12 episodes. In my opinion as a long time fan of the modern era.

    • @theKtransmission
      @theKtransmission 3 месяца назад

      100% agree. This show is built on a gradual slow burn mystery and the organic building of character relationships. I hate that they’re being forced into the modern streaming landscape’s frankly dysfunctional abbreviated season format.

    when you're describing the trickery with ruby and her mom and even the scene from rogue, it made me think of Glass Onion and how magnificent that was. the murder scene was right there in front of you and you didn't notice it, and if you go back to watch it you can see EXACTLY what you missed the first time. sherlock had that same problem where they are 'solving' mysteries using information that the audience never got, and it makes it feel so unsatisfying.

      Yeah it’s unfortunately baked into a lot of stuff the Who showrunners make. They seem to be able to tell cool, satisfying individual stories, but don’t seem to really care at all about their season-long arcs making sense. I could never get into Sherlock for that exact reason.

Bringing death to death causing life made zero sense to me. Something else that bothered me was Ruby's reaction to her mom. I know a lot of people were touched by the scene where Ruby finally meets her mother, but her mom so did not leave her in a safe place. She left a newborn outside and alone on a cold, snowy winter night. Ruby could have easily died. Oh well, at least she's happy about it... 🤷‍♀️ I would absolutely love to see a deep dive on Romana!

    Just came from another reaction where I'd commented that 15 has the duplicate TARDIS, but someone corrected me, saying that RTD said 15 has the original. Which was not at all how I saw it happen. I mean, it looks pretty clearly to me that 15 hit the original TARDIS with the mallet, and a second TARDIS was knocked out if it. The original looked exactly the same inside, while the new one had a ramp and a jukebox. 14 kept the original and 15 took the new one. Seemed pretty clear the way they play it in the episode, at least to me. If RTD is saying that then it feels like a retcon, but I wouldn’t put it past him.

    • @theKtransmission
      @theKtransmission 3 месяца назад

      Thanks so much! Ah right, the copyright issues! I covered that a bit at the tail end of my Rani theory video but I can summarize here, as well as a few new tidbits of info I learned since then: As far as I can tell, nobody publicly knows the status of the rights to the Rani character. After Pip and Jane Baker, the original writers and creators of the character, died, nobody knows who the rights passed to, since they had no children. It could be just be in the hands of an unresponsive relative, or a law firm or something. The BBC did launch investigations to find the owner, but nothing has ever been publicly announced. However, there are a few pieces of evidence that I feel indicate that the BBC / Disney have acquired the rights and just not publicly announced it (probably to prevent spoilers if/when they decide to use the character). There is a new playing card released last year and added to the Doctor Who Magic the Gathering set that is for the Rani character, explicitly designed to be the Kate O'mara version from "Time and the Rani." There is a line that was cut from the original draft of "The Giggle" where Mel goes on a short tirade explaining who the Rani is and her adventures in "Time and the Rani," as well as a line that did make it into Space Babies where 15 explicitly name-drops the character. Finally, Ncuti Gatwa stated in an interview that he specifically wants to face off against the Rani. I don't think they could make the card without having the rights to the character, and the cast and writers seem to be intentionally weaving her back into the lore of the show. That's all I've got though, a bit slim I know! But I have hope, because I think she's a great character that deserves the NuWho treatment.

      Exactly! I didn't dive too deep into the Timeless Child or Doctor origins in this cuz I feel like this season is so Ruby-centric, but that's exactly the logic I'm working off of. His unknown origins just fits too perfectly into RTD's new fantastical god themes. Maybe all gods originate from another plane of existence and enter our realm through wormholes in space-time. Maybe that's why they can break the fourth wall and see us, because they're used to and aware of the different realms of reality.

    My crazy theory- Ruby is a demigod, the daughter of Horus. She was placed in the doctor's way to help save the world, as Horus defeats Set in the original mythology. Mrs. Flood is a timelady, but not the Rani. She's working with Horus to ensure that Ruby is where she needs to be.

    • @theKtransmission
      @theKtransmission 3 месяца назад

      Oh dang, Horus! Didn't even think about that, but that fits really well. It even pulls in a bit more of the Egyptian mythology, since Horus was the son of Set's (Sutekh's) murdered brother, as opposed to actually being Set's brother, unlike the Doctor Who versions of Sutekh and Horus. So if Ruby is the daughter of Horus, it brings the whole "avenging offspring" element into the story. I like it! And yeah Mrs. Flood being a Time Lady and watching over Ruby makes sense. She's gotta be Time Lord-related in some way.

Now that Sutekh has been revealed, all the other puzzle pieces feel like they're falling into place a lot easier. I don't think I've got everything right, but I feel like some of this makes sense.

      Could be! My only thing about that theory is that the woman is very clearly a woman in these scenes, body type and all that. So are you saying that’s a future regeneration of the Doctor? Or perhaps 13 came by to help out? Or the Doctor is wearing like a holographic disguise or something. But yeah, in the world of Doctor Who it’s totally possible.

    Mrs. Flood - I have always felt that something had to have happened to her between earlier in Church on Ruby Road when she accuses her neighbour Abdul of putting the police box by her house, and the end when she not only accepts the police box but recognizes it as a TARDIS. ... A couple of reactors said she wears the same outfit throughout, but that's not correct. I am so curious about her!!

    • @theKtransmission
      @theKtransmission 3 месяца назад

      Yeah she’s a real conundrum! My theory is kinda wobbly on her, I gotta admit. The idea that she went on an adventure between the beginning and end of the Church on Ruby Road is a great theory that I think holds a lot of water.

      I feel almost certain that this is true. Something happened to her between those moments and I think that will be shown in the finale. perhaps she will journey back to Ruby Road with the Doctor and be merged with the Tardis somehow and then returned to that moment where she breaks the 4th wall.

    Re: 4th wall breaks. When a character looks straight ahead (i.e. into the camera), it doesn't *always* mean a 4th wall break. There has to be an acknowledgment of the audience in some way. Sometimes, characters look into the camera to show a point of view. At the end of Boom, there is no acknowledgement of the audience; they are actually looking at John Vater, Splice, and Mundy.

    • @theKtransmission
      @theKtransmission 3 месяца назад

      Good point. I think the Boom one made me feel like it was a sort of “stealth” fourth wall break, because there have been so many this season and the way they turned and looked towards the camera made it feel like it could be interpreted that way. I can tell the difference between a fourth wall break and the character just looking towards the direction of the camera, or the camera being the POV of another character, but I feel like if my theory is true, then RTD is playing with the language of cinema to sneak in these 4th wall breaks disguised as regular shots, as clues for who is secretly a god. Wild I know, but I really like this concept if it’s true.

    • @theKtransmission

      Just to be clear, I do specify that Set, the Egyptian god the Doctor Who character Sutekh is based on, is the god of deserts, storms, disorder, violence, and foreigners. I only refer to the Doctor Who character as the god of death, which is what he calls himself in the episode. You are right though, the lord of the underworld in Egyptian mythology is Osiris. Also just a fun fact: Anubis was the lord of the underworld in Egyptian mythology before he was replaced by Osiris. He's the one I usually think of first.

But still...I am sorry. I cannot understand this coward Doc.Who....standing on my point of view he is useless as I would be...quite different from what I expect from an amazing lord of time...the last one of his race...who choose to protect and educate our race in the time to come...he did sacrifice...he also sacrifice himself...in a way...but do not feed me this bad bad version like it was The Doctor...it is only a weak attempt to put other issue in a story of a character that does not need this ideas...maybe is my fault but then...how you can explain this low appreciation from fans and no interest at all from the whole viewers? Seriously...watch the old episodes...not even the oldest one...and you will feel the difference...if you don't...well...nothing else to say...but I will never say this little useless doc is something I like...I will tell you that's is a crap put up to put forward other issue I will not go in to..just to avoid more useless discussion. Since I think this place is really not a fair ground. Taking away the Doc Soul and think that is good?...go on your way...I'll cut it out this now...everyone have his truth...as long as you feel fine with it

    If only we had a strong Doctor holding it all together. Because of the dreadful bi-generation we now have an incompetent highly emotional human version of the Doctor. Tom Baker was perfect for the Doctor because he is a genuine eccentric and very alien in the role.

    • @theKtransmission
      @theKtransmission 3 месяца назад

      Tom Baker was the perfect Doctor, I agree. I love the way he behaves in “Pyramids of Mars,” for example, becoming cold and grave as the threat grows, showing a more alien, analytical side that Sarah is actually a bit scared by. I like Ncuti as the Doctor, and I’m okay with a new take where he’s more openly emotional on occasion, but this Doctor cried WAY too much and actually just came off a bit unstable and melodramatic in the end.

    Another great review! I was really bothered by the scene with the soldier in the time window. The Doctor made such a big deal about Ruby not moving, but then insisted that the soldier do it. Everyone should have been hyper focused on him, but they all forgot about him after he was out of sight. I was so distracted waiting to find out if he was ok and couldn't understand why no one else seemed to care. They didn't even notice he was gone until the big monster cloud showed up. It just didn't make sense to me. I also really liked OG Sutekh and was disappointed by the new CG one.

So it could just be an act from the start. Regardless, I think your theory holds a lot of water. I do think she's directly involved with Ruby, and that she has access to a TARDIS at some point in the story. I would not be surprised if she ended up being the woman on Ruby Road, either as her mother or caretaker.

    I really enjoyed this episode - but I can understand why others have more reserved opinions! My favourite finale pt 1 episode - World Enough and Time - is the one I’ve seen people refer to as a contrast most often, and I think it’s a good example of the difference. WE&T is all set up for the next episode, but also structured to be a satisfying story in and of itself. The hero wastes too much time demonstrating his heroism and cleverness, and by the time he gets to the rescue, it’s too late - it’s not very Dr Who, but other shows could certainly end there. The Legend of Ruby Sunday is an additional puzzle piece, not a story. A lot of my love for the episode is nostalgia for that “almost solved it!!” feeling from earlier seasons. I like your theory that Sutekh requires the Tardis! I think it makes a lot of sense - hanging around holding onto a ship sounds pretty dull if it’s not obligatory. Also fits nicely with the line about him seducing the vessel. A deeply vulnerable being managing to talk the tardis into betrayal through desire would be a lot more of an emotional gut-punch of a story beat than if he could probably have just solved his problems another way if the tardis hadn’t worked out. My personal insane theory is that Sutekh being able to control the dead is why the leader of the racists at the end of Dot and Bubble had a C surname. I’ve been thinking a lot about 73 yards and how it connects, but I presume I’ll only reach any conclusion there approximately five seconds before the episode spells the conclusion out.

    • @theKtransmission
      @theKtransmission 3 месяца назад

      Excellent assessment! WE&T is a great example of a the first part of a Doctor Who finale feeling stand-alone. This episode definitely has its moments and I really liked parts of it, but yeah, definitely a puzzle piece episode. Good call on the "vessel" line! I was just turning that over in my head but hadn't hit on the TARDIS yet. I think you're totally right! I wonder what Sutekh was able to offer the TARDIS in order to seduce it? Interesting theory! That makes sense that Sutekh would control the dead. I'm not quite following though- what does the "C" stand for? Corpse? And as for 73 Yards, I do think there's some secrets to Ruby's origins hidden in there somewhere. Perhaps her ability to hitch a ride back through time on her dead old self is part of her secret powers?

    • @tristan9506
      @tristan9506 3 месяца назад

      @@theKtransmission Re the “c” surname - the leader dude who appears at the end is called Brewster Cavendish, but the episode spent SO LONG emphasising not only that the deaths were alphabetical, but that “c comes before p!” that it struck me as bizarre that would slip by if it’s an oversight somewhere. Definitely possible it’s just a mistake or a dropped scene or a script shift or something, but Sutekh being confirmed made me wonder.
