I still think you can allow the other person to do that, for it to be their choice, and it not be an open relationship. If they decide they’re better off with someone else then that’s their decision. But that doesn’t mean you should let them change their mind whenever they want or continue to hurt you, if they didn’t choose you first. If you were just a second option to them.

Milad Md I understand and I think we take for granted that we all have the same definition of love. A love that isn’t possessive or controlling might allow for a partner to interact with others romantically. Their relationship was open on both sides as well and wasn’t centered around the one guy she mentioned. And judging by the outcome, a happily married couple, it would seem that things worked out in their favor. Imagine if he hadn’t allowed her the opportunity to explore with the other guy and that planted a seed of doubt or resentment that festered for years. That happens to a lot of couples and one party secretly wonders whether they made the best choice and perhaps even sneaks off to act on that curiosity. Jared knows he was chosen and as they said, everyday they know they’re choosing each other.
I love how they complement each other so well. She is so deep and certain of how she views the world. It's refreshing and provides me with hope for my future partner.
I respect the evolution of Shan and Jared's relationship and how they have been honest in their communication from the beginning. Open relationships aren't for everyone - I've been married over 10 years and am monogamous but I don't knock couples who explore consensual non monogamy as an option FOR THEMSELVES. As we grow and change, so do our needs so assigning a one-size-fits-all expectation of marriage may be why so many marriages actually fail.

Shan's point about tracing the idea of a relationship versus creating something unique to you is SO incredible. I've been feeling that but haven't been able to put it into words and she just did for me. I am eternally grateful to Jubilee for featuring such intelligent and mature people like her than can speak to what it's like to be in a relationship with non-normative aspects.
The comment section is terrible. But I love Shan and Jared. They are a beautiful and mature couple. I have been following Shan/Shannon for a while on her RUclips page, and she is truly inspiring. I loved the articulation of the open relationship part. It's so enlightening. I always wondered something similar but didn't know how to word it and couldn't find any real life examples of it being done or where people didn't think I was crazy. I was always saying that if you really love someone you let them go. Not literally as in you don't put effort in a relationship, but where the energy is open, Jared once said to Shan that he never wanted their relationship to be anything more than it currently was, as in there are no expectations on this, it flows where it may. That means, when Shan had that person come up in her life and she wanted to explore it and asked Jared, he loved her enough to say I want the best for you, I am letting you go enough to explore, and he was saying I want you to choose the best person for you and I really hope that person is me, it makes it more significant if Shannon doesn't have a leash but she still chooses to be with Jared, in contrast to some people's definition of marriage where you never can stray ever. If people don't have the physical freedom, their minds wander and they get emotionally creative, and perhaps they have an emotional affair. The energy has to come out somehow, and Jared either gives her the space or doesn't and it blows her up inside. I think that's a level of maturity that many people can't even comprehend. Lots of commenters here I think don't understand but I do, I see it and I think it's fantastic. it's paradoxical that when you let go, the space opens for someone to come to you, versus if you keep them tight and chained down, it's safe but there's no space and no creativity and no flow.

Really? I’ve never experienced that at all. Usually people in psychology are in my experience the most abnormal in relationships. And I myself have a psych background. As far as a relationship goes (and they fit this dynamic as well) usually people in psychology are quite good at knowing what their own issues are and being able to articulate that. For instance the fact that she is afraid of children and let’s be honest the changes that it does to relationships (even though she didn’t say it I guarantee it’s a worry that esp if you are used to a more open style because kids do make a person much more committed to truly having a relationship closed) speaks volumes.

So pivotal. I’m in an LDR and it’s also my first relationship ever. And so it’s so hard to not “trace old art” because my idea of love is only what I’ve seen in the movies or stories from people I know. I had a relationship that was like this that lasted over 2 years, but ended. I soon learned that, just like with any skill or passion, it makes sense to try and fail with sex and relationships. I don't have the motivation to try again, but it made me realize that you just won't find someone until you've given dating a try with more than a few people.

This type of relationship is usually initated by the person who is unsure on whether or not they actually like the other person, or is need of some sort of relief and can't get the person they actually want to be with. The person who agrees to this agreement usually has feelings that have already expressed to the person who initiated it and was rejected by them. It's a trap for the person who agrees to it because it has no noticable difference to a real relationship. The person with feelings might get jealous brcause they want more; but, that person has no claim to the person who initiated this. The might start to devalue themselves and see themselves as less than because they just want to spend more time with that person, they want that person to stop looking at other potential partners and just look at them the same way they look at that other person. A friends with benefits relationship is usually just that. This type of relationship can turn into a real, monogamous relationship; but, that usually isn't the case and that usually doesn't last. This type of relationship can turn into a marriage; but, that has an even slimer of happening than dating.This type of relationship can severely damage someone who has genuine feelings for the other person for a lifetime and bring out the worst in them; leaving them alone to pick up the pieces of their shattered heart, while forcing them to heal, and move on abruptly cold turkey style. It's not the worst type of relationship to be in; but, it's also not the best..for some.

Worst feeling ever to feel like you are not good enough. And constantly trying to prove that you are. Problem is the guy was my childhood crush so I have liked him even before he knew me and when we did start talking I was just already in my feelings and he's a great guy! But he just doesn't like me the way I like him, he didn't know me, I have known him years prior, since he is popular in my city, that's what got me played before he even said hi. I was already ready to accept anything from him and when he suggested friends with benefits I said yes, I never honestly heard of it at the time but he said he doesn't want a relationship said only sex so cos I already liked him I said yes. I have just been so happy to be with him that the fact that he doesn't want a relationship didn't really matter to me but I want a relationship always have.
I'm slowly getting out of the situation and he may give me the relationship but still I like him more than he likes me so I'll always be needing to prove myself to him and he will never love and protect me like a man who truly genuinely loves someone.
