Like the backlit gauges. Still miss rotary dials, but I think those days are over. Real buttons on the steering wheel. YES! To VW, stop using black shiney plastic! It collects dust, fingerprints and scratches too much. Matte black plastic is just fine. Losing the manual transmission was inevitable. V-Tex is so good now, animal skin can be discontinued.

I feel like we're going backwards with all new cars: non integrated screens just hanging over the dashboard like a stupid iPad, glossy black buttons that are just fingerprint and dust magnets, over complicated touch interfaces, the **LOSS OF THE MANUALS**. Everything looks like cost cutting measures, but the prices keep creeping up all the time.
Not painting under the hood and a manual strut is part of the "we make it cheaper but sell it for more" hateful trend.
I wonder how much the special IQ lights will be to replace if they fail/ you have a small accident. We don't really need fancy lights, functionality and reliability is more important.
Otherwise it looks ok. Doesn't bring a lot of emotion like the GTIs of old.
Edit: Love the tartan cloth seats though.
    Ranting again :)

The Golf is great to drive, but the interior continues to be a real disappointment - particularly at this price-point. Where is the return to quality that VW CEO Schafer recently promised?
Certainly not in the plasticky doors. Nor in the clunky center screen with its cheap-looking bezel. Nor in the tacky "Piano Black" paint on the lower center console. What a let-down!

I'm a huge Golf GTI fan, so I'm not unhappy with what I see here at all. I do wonder, though, why VW didn't put the sunglass compartment back along with the driver's side glove compartment, and put back the hydraulic lift strut for the hood. These are all premium features that helped make the Mk7 seem like such a perfect overall package. I thought for sure VW would have put these back since they say they are closely listening to the customer. Come to think of it, cloth A-pillar trims, and a real engine cover would have been nice, too. And, yes, I'm a current Mk8 owner.

No denying a paddle shift dual-clutch is an effective transmission and also fun, but scrabbling to grab that next gear in a Integra Type S or Civic Type R is fun (indeed nostalglic fun, but how does that differ from just plain fun?). It's a combination of stricter Euro emissions regulations and company cost savings. If they can streamline production for just one transmission style they save a bunch of money. Basically, they don't care to appeal to the enthusiast demographic. They think sales will remain "good" enough to warrant saving the extra costs. the GTI is no longer a passion product for VW, feels like an obligatory car for them to have, rather than something they see as a halo car defining their brand.

I personally like the new Golf and feel like, for a big automotive company facing lots of cheaper alternatives to the Golf, or other VW products for that matter, is doing pretty well. From the perspective of how the global economy is shaping up, they are providing a lot more value on product points people come into contact with everyday. I Also don’t mind an unpainted underneath of the hood, if it means it’s an ‘eco-saving’. Kudos to VW

Exterior is great, but I feel like honda and mazda have better interiors. The vw dash is not cohesive, the tablet is too square and tall. There is too much gloss plastic. Gloss plastic reminds me of very cheap electronics (like tablets). I do not understand why german carmakers think gloss/piano plastic looks premium. We moved away from vw to honda for that reason.

Apologies if this has been addressed a million times (there are a lot of comments), but is this the exact specs and details of the GTI MK8.5 that is coming to the US this year? It's kind of important because if this is what it will be, I might likely buy it, since it seems to have added all the necessary tech, and fixed the idiosyncrasies (steering wheel buttons, illuminated temp slider, new infotainment software, bigger screens, more HP). Also, will this model (like the Clubsport and prob R) have the ability for carbon fiber trim in the interior? It was mentioned quickly but only vaguely in the video.

  • @krane15

First, by this point cars like the Golf GTI should have struts for the hood. That was acceptable a generation ago when these were entry level economy cars, but at this point it like buying a car with crank windows. That not just true with VW, but a lot of other car manufactures too.
Second, I really hate seats with integrated head rests -- one size does not fit all. Those belong in sports cars that don't have a rear seat. Still I don't mind if they're offered as long as I have an option. The engine cover could benefit from at least a small dash of color, like a raised R.
Looks like the sun roof only opens half way, but at least it does open. Nowadays this trend towards glass roofs that don't open is a deal breaker for me. I actually use my sun roof especially during this time of the year.
One more thing, a rain sensor should close all the roof and all the windows. I saw a video with a convertible Mercedes with the top down and the sky opened up. I thought we have self-driving cars but they're too stupid to do a simple thing like raise the top and windows when it rains.

Love the wheels. Other than that the GTI got to "techie" and a bit tacky for my liking. Really miss the old style hot hatches. The fact they don't spray under the bonnet now ... , really?! Dacia still does it. Talk about cost cutting. Good thing it now offers ChatGPT. Very useful when in a hot hatch. Personally I think the the last "honest" Golf/GTI was the 7.5

  • @AHRA-xm2et
    @AHRA-xm2et 11 месяцев назад +1

First thing I did with my MK8 when I picked up , fitted gas strut and removed the cheap horrible one . Secondly, fitted GTI 7/ 7.5 C/S / performance / R / Pre facelift T Roc R callipers and cupra Leon , all share same size callipers and discs with MK8 GTI 245 bhp . Don’t know why vw is fitting again same callipers with 8.5 even though they increased horse power same power was on the second generation S3 . C ‘ mon VW , enough with cost cutting , car will cost over £40k as standard .
Golf 8 R / GTI CS callipers and discs can fit on MK8 base GTI - TTS and Porche Macan Brembo callipers can also fit on MK8 for those who are concerned about retrofitting them , preferably to keep them OEM.

Thanks Thomas. I am surprised the GTI badge is on the drivers door and not the front panel / fender
Obviously it's better to have the gas struts on the bonnet but If the car is built to a price and that money went from the gas struts of the bonnet to the physical buttons on the steering wheel, I am glad with this.

The cooling on the phone charger is a good idea, my phone keeps overheating if using it on google maps and charging, you end up just plugging the thing into a usb c cable which kind of defeats the whole idea of capacitive charging..
