The DUMBEST ANALOGY in NFL HISTORY

  • I cannot believe this is a real story. I also cannot believe that Sean McDermott might not hold the top spot
Sean McDermott's highly controversial speech that he gave during the 2019 NFL season to motivate the Buffalo Bills seems really stupid and ill-advised. Comparing anything to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11 feels wrong. Having said that, this might not be the worst comparison made by an NFL official to a player. Because in 1974, when Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach crossed the picket line, Ed Garvey of the NFLPA had a bizarre statement to make.

Funny part is the terrorist didn’t execute their plan perfectly, they failed the most important step which was to crash the plane into the White House, only fitting the Bills coach told his team to be like them because the team only accomplishes 75 percent of the season plan so I think they listened

People use the Titanic as an analogy without hesitation. 9/11 hasn't quite had enough time to be that yet, but it's getting there.
I think McDermott was also worse because he actually lost friends to the attack yet he still used it.

@@marcusmcgraw3519 You know what you can blame him for though?
-Consistently wasting timeouts in games that ended up being close.
-Having his team take a knee with 20 seconds left and going into overtime despite knowing that the same team had overcome the same scenario the previous season (Eagles game, and they overcame the same scenario against the Lions in 2022).
-Running prevent defense in obvious situations where it was not beneficial to do so (13 seconds, many other games I could mention).
      -Clock management.
-Being way too conservative on offense in crucial situations (Not going for 2 to take the lead, kicking a field goal in OT despite it only being 4th and short)
-He relies too much on his star players (Milano, Trey White) being there to make plays in crucial situations, instead of outcoaching his opponents that he should have easily won against.
-Oh yeah, the 9/11 thingy. The only thing that could have made it worse was if he was the HC of the Giants or Jets. We're technically the only NY team and my god is that one way to piss off the majority of your fans, players, and people who suffered losses on that day. It's one thing to make fun of 9/11 with your friends, but telling that to a team of grown men with a serious tone is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard of.
There are a few other more petty reasons I could mention, but McDermont isn't a great coach by any means and he probably should have been gone after 13 seconds, IMO. Also, Allen isn't even doing that bad this year. He got off to a rocky start but he's had some great games and also has 9 rushing TD's. I'm a Bills fan and I know Allen has his weaknesses and downsides of playing as a hyper aggressive QB, but by no means is he terrible. I feel like with some good coaching and a solid WR 2 he could easily be on par with Mahomes and Burrow as the 3 elite QB's of the AFC (which to some extent he already is, his total TD-Turnover ratio is better than Mahomes as of 12/9/23).

However, if you look at it from a certain standpoint, those terrorists had a nearly impossible goal, coordinated it with precise planning, practiced, and acted on the plan flawlessly, with little to no errors. And they did it without sitting at a desk, pressing a button 3,000 miles away.

That's really interesting about Ed Garvey, since while his negotiating skills with the NFL left a lot to be desired, he's still widely regarded as a pioneer in labor relations thanks to his leadership of the Major League Baseball Players Association. Though, I don't think Garvey was nearly as dense as he was using Pearl Harbor to ding Staubach for scabbing.

I think the 9/11 analogy is hilarious and inappropriate but you very clearly have Ameribrain where only American tragedies are bad. Making a comparison to Oppenheimer's nuclear research is similarly insensitive in that his research resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. It was an inevitable discovery but still not one that should be used for football motivation.
