The starting time of Super Bowl 27 had to be pushed back three minutes. This was so NBC could air the latest music video from Garth Brooks. It was a last-minute condition for Brooks to sing the National Anthem before the game.
I had a friend from Boston who absolutely refused to believe the game was over--he was adamant that they were going to put time back on the clock and that the Rams would promptly Home Run Throwback the Patriots on the ensuing kickoff return. It was practically around the time that Kraft had the Lombardi in his hands that it dawned on him that the Patriots had won.
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about timing issues for the Super Bowl 37 postgame, when ABC and the NFL decided to insert a live Bon Jovi performance.
One of the most under represented and league altering important facts that stemmed from this game is how field goals affect the clock after they’re attempted. When Adam Vinatieri kicked the game winning field goal, there were at least 2 seconds left on the clock that were inexplicably run off when the play was clearly over. The Patriots should’ve had to kick off to St. Louis, and the Rams were upset at the league for not getting another opportunity to pull off a miracle. But by rule, the Rams had no case, and here’s why: At the time, the NFL rules stated that the timekeeper was told when to run the clock and stop the clock when signaled by the referee. When Vinatieri kicked his field goal, the referee never made a signal to the timekeeper to stop the clock, so the timekeeper let the clock run and ended the game. The Rams complained about how confusing the clock rule was, and the NFL apologized and put in the rule book that a field goal attempt cannot take longer than 5 seconds for the 2002 season, and it’s still in effect today
This was exactly true. I was 9 at the time, and that sunday my family had been out running errands all day. We stopped at ruby Tuesday and saw the pregame festivities and remembered the super bowl was that day. Lol
This is very similar to what happened at the 1994 World Cup with the group game between Ireland & Mexico in Orlando. Ireland had played Italy in the first group game at 3 PM ET mainly to avoid the mid day heat even though the match would kick off at 8:30 PM in Ireland. The Irish when they got to Orlando thought the match with Mexico would be at the same 3 PM ET time slot. However what Ireland didn't count on was for their national broadcaster RTE to ask FIFA at the last minute to move the kickoff time back 3 hours to noon ET so that the match would kick off at dinner time back in Ireland so that RTE could get higher ratings even though the whole country would already be watching the match. This change announced a day before the game ensured that Ireland would be playing in the oppressive mid day heat of Orlando & was one of the reasons why Ireland lost to Mexico 1-0. As you can imagine Jack Charlton Ireland's coach was absolutely livid with both RTE & FIFA for moving the kickoff time a day before the game & completely ruining his tactics as well as increasing the risk of his players getting heatstroke. Because there was so much backlash from this switch, FIFA told all World Cup broadcasters that they would not move the kickoff time for any future World Cup matches simply because the networks wanted higher ratings.
I remember watching this game and at 1730 CT thinking "wasn't this game supposed to start by now?" It ended really late too. Also, why did the clock expire? Rams could've returned the kickoff for a TD!
Not quite true, there have been several since that have been played on FieldTurf, which is a form of artificial turf. I think what you meant to say is that it was the last Super Bowl played on old-school Astroturf, which is true.
I still say to this day that this game was rigged in more ways than one. The Rams just didn't show up for the game and the no-name (at the time) Patriots ran away with the win!? Here's my reasoning; It was the first super bowl after 9/11 and America needed a symbol. So games, I feel, were skewed in the favor of the "PATRIOTS" to get to and win "America's Game" for that season. This is the season of the infamous Tuck Rule that propelled Tom Brady and the Patriots further into the Playoffs than they would've gotten otherwise. Then I think that the NFL just told the Rams to not do their best because we needed a symbol and it's easier to rally behind a team as patriotic as the New England Patriots out of Boston than it is to rally behind the Rams from St. Louis. Of course I could be reading more into it from that season, but I think that its a fun little conspiracy theory to play with. 😜
I remember watching this game as a 15-year old and thinking the same thing. The broadcast put a lot of emphasis on the Patriots doing the player introductions as a team, too. Something about unity and all.
Yea, you forgot the fact that the Jets and Giants were the team representing the NYC area, which would have made more sense for them to win this super bowl. So that nullifies your conspiracy.
@dieseljester3466 If they were going to do that, they would've rigged the NFC Championship Game for Philadelphia, because a Patriots-Eagles Super Bowl is a "patriotic" win either way.
Yeah I don’t think anyone had a problem with the ceremonies themselves. It was more the fact that the NFL was absolutely terrible at communicating this late start time and truly had no idea what was going on
For the note at the end, actually the tougher and more meaningful kick for Vinatieri and the Pats franchise as a whole was the 45-yarder in the snowstorm in Foxboro during the divisional round. Without him converting that kick, the tuck rule is a footnote and the Patriots dynasty is at least delayed and maybe doesn't get off the ground. Under those conditions, a made kick was much more unexpected than a 48-yarder in a dome. (Scott Norwood apparently didn't get the memo he was kicking in Tampa and not Buffalo at Super Bowl XXV.) The stakes were actually somewhat lower here as a missed kick only results in overtime, and if the Pats lose the game well they were underdogs anyway and it probably doesn't stop the overall trajectory.
I thought the "controversy" would have been the amount of mugging and contact that the referees allowed the Patriots' secondary to get away with against the Rams receivers. Former Rams fan here, still pouting over the loss.
@@AlanKelly-ff7tkthey did get it done. The fuck you talking about the Patriots cheated the audible to the correct defense every time. Marshall Faulk had said they had installed new plays that week that nobody had seen and the Patriots still automatically shifted to the right defense every time. Once the rams figured out how to get back on track the rams went scored to complete the comeback little too late tho cus they lost due to bullshit. Than the tapes were mysteriously were destroyed. This was ace in back pocket to return the rams back to LA. Since they didn’t have to right to relocate.
I remember thinking it was neat that a new up and coming team won, because a dynasty could potentially make things boring, even one with a great offense like the Rams. It was a great game, though. I remember staying up late but I thought it was just because it was close and they took a lot of timeouts late, or something. Or the Rams passed the ball more than NFL teams usually did.
Talking about all the super patriotic performances of this pregame show, and considering the year and season this Super Bowl capped off, it’s very ironic that the New England *Patriots* won this specific Super Bowl
In previous videos, you compared Super Bowl LV to Super Bowl XVIII; Super Bowl LVI to Super Bowl XXIII and Super Bowl LVII to Super Bowl XXXVIII. Which past Super Bowl are you planning to compared Super LVIII to?
I realize that the logo had to be changed to be patriotic, but If you had the idea to use the unused Pre-9/11 logo to be recycled for a future Super Bowl in New Orleans, would it cause any backlash, even if you were to replace XXXVI with LIX, or the next New Orleans-based Super Bowl in line?
If I remember right, the reason the NFL went to the generic logo was because someone accused the league of stealing their design for a previous Super Bowl’s logo and took them to court. To prevent the potential of this happening every year, the league went to the generic logo that they use every year.
How about the cheating by the Patriots (taping the Rams practices)? How about that the tapes were destroyed by Goodell? How about the non-calls on pass interference on the Pats and the intentional grounding on Brady in that last series? The fix was always in for that game.
You said that Tom Brady did nothing else of note in his career. Wait, what? He's a 3 time MVP, 7-time SB Champ, and all-time leader in multiple passing categories.

I know the last daytime finish was Super Bowl XI at the Rose Bowl (1230 Pacific time/330 Eastern Time kickoff). Speaking of the kickoff, let me preface this by saying it's a *joke*. If Taylor Swift is not at Allegiant Stadium by 330 Pacific, the NFL will push back KO time. I just like how she's making MAGA boys melt down 😂

Meh, Summerall couldn’t have sounded more bored when Vinatieri hit the game winner

I thought the NFL was more meticulous than that, but even the people there can be caught slipping sometimes.
They should have started the pre-game performances at 5:30PM Eastern Time so that the field can be cleared for the coin toss.
