Coming from a lifelong Bengals fan: don’t blame Bruce Coslet for his record in Cincinnati. Don Shula and Jimmie Johnson couldn’t have won with those teams.
Don Shula's son certainly couldn't either.
Not even Bill Cowher or Marty Shottenhiemer could have won with those Bengal teams.

@@vincentr.6109 After actually winning the wild card game, something that still astounds and amazes me to this day. It was Chuck Noll's only playoff win in the final seven years of his career BTW.

I didn't know Pat Leahy was a student at Saint Louis. I can't believe this video is how I found out that he never played college football. As for Coslet's decision, I wonder if he had Leahy work on this play in practice. How did Coslet forget that Eric Metcalf never returned punts in the Bud Carson era?
Didn’t Metcalf return the kick off earlier? I was at this game. It was my first live game. I have the ticket stub still.

Don’t forget about the very next week against the Bills on MNF. The Jets were trailing 23-7 with a 3nd and 20 at the Buffalo 33. There were about 13 minutes left in the game. “Brilliantly”, Coslet decided to run two conservative running plays giving the Bills the ball on downs.
I know it was an honest mistake but reading 3nd and 20 made me think I was having a stroke...

The 1990 browns had a turnover differential of -24. In week 16, the browns turned the ball over NINE times at 3 rivers stadium. The steelers were up 35-0 at the half

Cleveland would have gotten the ball at the 33. The NFL didn't adopt the rule of the ball going to the spot of the hold instead of line of scrimmage until 1994

Man, my parents used to love and hate Metcalf. Love because he was amazing at returns, hate because he would sometimes celebrate with the ball too early and they were terrified he'd fumble.
The one thing I remember about Metcalf is, "Hey diddle diddle, Metcalf up the middle."
My dad was the same way though in his case he would always complain about how Metcalf always ran backwards after catching punts. It was a style that aided his returns for TDs, but meant frequently if he didn't take it to the house, he ended up losing yards over if he'd just taken a fair catch. Drove my dad crazy. As a youngster though, I LOVED metcalf. Which makes sense since when I played video games back then I basically called a deep pass play on every down, very all or nothing in a similar way.
I had to make a quick side visit to Wikipedia to be sure that Senator Patrick Leahy wasn't a former football player. (He wouldn't be the first.) There are about a dozen Pat/Patrick Leahy's!
If you are going to punt the ball... have the guy who actually gets paid to punt the ball be the one who actually punts the ball...

I think Coslett was hoping the Browns would drop the ball. And considering how bad the Browns were that year they might have.
This was my first live NFL game. I grew up a Jets fan.
Pretty sure Metcalf returned a kick off.
Bruce Coslet was always too clever by half.
Bruce Coslet gets a ton of hate, but he did make the playoffs with a crappy team…

Considering the Jets won this game, this decision/choice made absolutely no difference.
1. This is something Mike McCarthy did last year; victory in spite of a Dumb Decision.
2. In the Jets coaching pantheon, Bruce Coslet ranks down there; but not as bad as Adam Gase, Rich Kotite or Lou Holtz.

If they punt the ball and it goes out of the end zone it comes back to the 20. That would be only 2 yards better.
Coslet was bad.. though on this one.. if Leahy had done a slightly better job.. we wouldn't be talking about this.... Hey, the broncos had Elway punt a few times.. which is in the same vein...
Agreed, you could argue he overthought it a bit, but calling it a dumb decision feels like a bit of a stretch. The result wasn't even that bad, they got it almost at the 20 anyway. Given a better punt could have pinned them, I don't think the risk to reward was that unreasonable.
The explanation afterwards is what propelled this into “I have to talk about how awful this was” territory

In fact, Pat Leahy is the Jets scoring leader by a very large margin, nobody's replacing him as #1 for many years.
This is why I'm not a fan of the logo returning to this one for the Jets. It's filled with many bumbling plays like this and ofc 1996.
