  • In 1990, New York Jets rookie running back Blair Thomas was on the verge of doing something special against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers- breaking the Jets' single-season 16-game record for most rushing yards by a rookie running back, topping his mentor and his teammate, Freeman McNeil. You're never gonna believe what happened next

If it's any consolation Marcus Allen shattered it the very next season anyway. The Jets and Bucs actually played again the next season and the Jets made sure to run up the score to get revenge.

Running backs nowadays aren't kept on like the days of Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, and the premium all-time best ever, Walter Payton. And I'm a Packers fan. The Packers were almost out of the playoff hunt last year, but then Aaron Jones came back from his injury. Green Bay dominated those last games and Aaron Jones was the spark. When AJ Dillon was playing the Packers weren't the same team. The season ended and everyone thought AJ Dillon was going to be cut. Instead, A.Jones was cut and they resigned Dillon? The Packers then turned around and signed a Running Back off Free Agency. Running backs now have a very short life span.

The real summary of Blair Thomas's career: he had a career high 125 yards rushing VS the big, bad Bears on Monday night, but all anybody who watched game (like me) remembers is him losing a fumble when the Jets were attempting to run out the clock, leading to the Bears tying it up and winning in OT. It was one of those situations where a team has the game won, all they have to do is not fumble...and they do.

The 1984 Bucs Jets game sounds like something the Florida Gators did in a 1971 game against the Miami Hurricanes. They let Miami score a meaningless touchdown to get the ball back for QB John Reaves, who had already thrown for over 2000 yards in each of his 3 seasons as the Gators QB. IIRC, they wanted Reaves to have the all time passing record, but I'm not sure who held it at the time and it may have been a single game passing record.
