Acute Pancreatitus can be both mild and exceedingly serious and even fatal. It's not something you want to mess around with. The key part of what she said is that she got hospitalized after getting a CT scan. This probably means they saw something on the scan they didn't like (like organ damage). The fact her SPO2 levels dropped during her stay showed just how sick she really was. I am glad she is okay now.

I was hospitalized while travelling in Japan at the beginning of April, so a lot of what Mio refers to in this stream is still uncomfortably fresh in my memory... Sadly, including the bit where she deferred seeking treatment initially in favour of rest/recovery hoping it'd clear up... Despite all the hiccups and hurdles I had to deal with(and the terrible insurance payout that wouldn't cover even the cost of lodging/flight delays, much less the hospitalization bills and surgery costs), it was an interesting experience and I very much appreciate the hospitals in Japan...

As a nurse, I want to add some supplemental information based on what Mio discussed in this clip to help others better understand the condition she had.
Disclaimer: This is not medical advice. The information I provide here is mostly based on my own knowledge as a nurse, aside from the statistical information about pseudocysts. Since specific information was not given, I had to make assumptions based on what information was provided. In areas where I had to make an assumption will be marked with "***"
1:08 Acute pancreatitis in it's most basic form is simply the pancreas becoming more swollen. In a majority of cases, it often resolves without any intervention.
1:20 Aside from alcohol and gallstones, things such as auto-immune conditions, viruses, and high blood calcium and fat levels, some medications, and genetics can also causes it. Stress/overwork can contribute to the development acute pancreatitis. However, there are cases where no cause is found. (Referred to as Idiopathic Pancreatitis)
1:55 *** Mio may be referring to here is the rupture of a pseudocyst (basically a pocket/pouch of damaged cells and fluids). Pseudocysts present in about ~10 - 20% of acute pancreatitis cases depending on the journal study you read. But the spontaneous rupturing of a pseudocyst is actually pretty rare, occurring in about 3 - 5% of cases with pseudocysts. (Case Report I refer to for the spontaneous rupture statistic: journals.lww.com/acgcr/fulltext/2021/08000/endoscopy_induced_pancreatic_pseudocyst_rupture__a.6.aspx) Ruptured pancreatic pseudocysts are a medical emergency and can be life threatening. (Can cause a lot of potential complications that I will not go into as Mio did not mention them)
5:52 Kidney failure is a common complication of pseudocyst rupture
6:40 *** Since Mio was being kept on complete bedrest, and they wanted to strictly monitor her Intake vs Output, a Urethral Catheter is what doctors will sometimes want.

This is really interesting to me from a clinical pov. I work in an acute surgery ward and one of the common things we have is acute pancreatitis.
It’s super weird to hear her say they put her on total bed rest and banned her from bathing. Here in the UK we would encourage rest but still say you should mobilise as you can to promote mobility, and definitely still shower (you can protect IV sites if you’re smart about it).
It could be an error in translation but it suggests there’s quite a different approach in Japan for healthcare which is weird to hear. 😅
Hope Mio is feeling much better though!

    • @windshipping
      @windshipping 15 дней назад +3

The translation is good, so the approach is probably different. A bit later in the stream she says they moved her bed up - she describes the 'wiiiiiz' sound very cutely - and as it happened she immediately felt bad and threw up. I would assume they wanted to avoid stimulating her body like that with the early no bathing or shower?
She also talks about slowly being allowed to drink or 'eat' and how it was a 'food gacha' at the hospital wether she'd get something she was comfortable eating or not. Also doing some fun fever dreams and feeling like Cleopatra or a super VIP with all the nurses at her command xD
It was a pretty interesting stream, perhaps some other parts will be clipped later.

Jeez, that sounds like a nightmare for anyone to go through. I wouldn't wish anyone to go through that, let alone one of my favorite Holomembers. Mio has been one of my biggest sources of comfort out of everyone in Hololive, so worrying about her and hearing about what she went through did not put me at ease. I'm thankful that she's feeling better now, because I don't want to imagine what Hololive would be like without her.

Been praying for her ever since I heard she fell ill. Glad she was able to recover; acute pancreatitis can very much be fatal (although, to be fair, any part of the body that decides to rupture is potentially fatal, regardless of the organ). Hope she takes it easy over the next few months just to make sure she can fully recover and be back to her funny mama-wolf self!

@@SingularCherubimI know it sounds worse, but appendicitis is less bad in the long term. You cut it out and never have to worry about it ever again in your life. Getting acute pancreatitis once raises the odds of getting it again later, especially if you don’t address the cause, which can be many things because it’s a sensitive organ. If it’s something direct like alcohol, that’s easy, but something vague like stress and it’s a lot more complicated.

@@DinnerForkTongue Both are bad, but unfortunately acute pancreatitis is worse when you look at things in the long-term. Appendicitis is usually resolved completely with appendectomy.
Having an episode of pancreatitis not only increases your risk of getting it again, but it also significantly increases your risk of developing pancreatic cancer, which is the cancer with the lowest survival rate.

This is so scary... But Mio-sha is so strong. If I was hospitalized I would want my friends and family to come visit me often and encourage me to get better... Mio-sha is strong enough that she didn't want her friends to see her at her worst. (Probably because she doesn't want them to remember her like that.)

She’s so strong. The fact that Mio only noticed the change in their behaviour and not the damage being done to her really speaks volumes as to how resilient she is. If i get sick, I feel like I can count every single cell that’s infected/ruptured and all Mio though was “huh, that’s more vomit than usual, it must be a stomach bug” is incredible.
Regardless, I hope she recovers fully and has her health monitored for about a month after her discharge date.

The unfortunate situation aside, mad respect for Mio for being transparent, telling all the fans about what she went through. She even did a nice visual guide to help explain her condition. She can choose not to say anything about it like management suggested, maybe help keep the immersion that is vtuber, but we all know they're human too and she have a huge platform to possibly help others who might be going through the same symptoms in the future. I'm glad she have fully recovered and back to the swings of things now, it must've been the worst 2 months for her.

I had the same problem years ago. I thought I just had an upset stomach, but when I could keep food down and the pain lasted more than a few days, I went to the hospital. They IMMEDIATELY put you into a hospital bed after confirming that it's pancreatitis. As of that moment, you're not allowed to eat or drink anything until your numbers go back to a reasonable amount because the food can cause the pancreas to get enflamed again and the cycle just continues. The constant IV drip is no joke either. Like she said, you go through so many bags of fluid that you find yourself having to pee like every half hour. It was definitely not a fun time, but it felt great not to have that pain anymore after getting out.
