Not only were they great performers but they had a kick ass sound crew. Their music sounded just as great in concert as on their albums. Not an easy feat with their musical complexity. Cheers to some of the most consummate musical performers ever. I'll always say the ELP is, was and ever shall be my favorite band of ALL time.
".....Not an easy feat with their musical complexity....." Although - like Rush - there were only three of them. Like Rush, they produced a lot of notes and a lot of music for three guys, but they generally didn't have the problem of two or more instruments competing for the same frequency band. That's where you get the difficulty. Steely Dan, for example - now THAT's got to be a tough band to run sound for.
I've lost count of how many times I have seen these guys, but have never been disappointed. The Welcome Back Tour in 1973 is one of the top 5 shows I have seen in my lifetime. This was also a great one, though I saw it out doors in less than optimum weather so I was a bit distracted. Still, can we ever hope for anyone to come and take the torch from musicians like this for future generations? Thank God for recorded media.
Just now found out about Keith passing ..... on my birth date of all days! My wife took me to see this tour in San Francisco as a birthday gift. Keith performed "C'est la Vie" on the accordion wearing a black french bere ... sunglasses and a red rose in his teeth! Greg introduced him as "Rocky in the Beatnik Gear"! Keith will always be one of the Titans of Prog!
Unbelievable to realise this was recorded more than 23 years ago. Keith will be sorely missed and probably never surpassed. Genius is a word bandied around willy nilly but in his case it's fitting and justified.
I was there in Charlotte also. And we were not alone. Truly one of the Greatest Groups of all time. My ultimate concert would have been to have ELP, Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull all together in concert. Music from the Greatest Generation of Music...🙏🙏🙏
Amazing performance. That you could take what is basically an Orchestral piece and deliver it with just 3 musicians and pull it off is still astounding.
They must’ve done some serious pirate research to write this one. They’ve got all the terminology down. “Who’ll make his mark?!” I loved this song so much when I was little. I used to watch Disney’s “Treasure Island” once a day, so my dad played this song for me. It was the last song on the album, and I’d be overwhelmed with anticipation. One of my earliest childhood memories is this song. I used to bring the weirdest mix tapes to school in my Walkman. They’d have ELP, Beethoven, Warren Zevon, Phantom of the Opera, Pink Floyd, Disney Songs... oh I can’t forget YES w/ Rick Wakeman....
Greg Lake was an avid lover of history, especially the lore behind the English royalty and pirate era. He incorporated all of that in his lyrics and the sounds of his songs.
Saw them when I was only 15 in 1977. I just turned 50 and I still love these guys. Thank you Keith, Carl, and Greg for years of the best music ever. Cheers from Des Moines, Iowa
When I first picked up my drum sticks, it was back in the early 70's. The talents of ELP pushed me to become a better drummer. Were it not for their talents, I would not be the drummer I am today. "Pirates" was and always will be a song that pushes to the limits of my abilities. Losing Keith and Greg was quite a blow to me. Sure, Carl was my main drumming influence, but were it not for teamwork of Keith, Greg and Carl, I would not have the musical knowledge I have today. Yes, I am an "old" musician. However, I am a better musician through the talents of Keith, Greg and Carl. I grew up during an era that encompassed some of the best classical / progressive rock musicians that have ever graced this planet. I am a musical child of the 1970's. More importantly, I am a student of ELP, Yes, Marillion, King Crimson, Genesis and other progressive bands. Were it not for the talents of these bands, I would be nothing more than a "wedding band" drummer. To those who share in my devotion to this genre, I am proud to be a part of the group of musicians who are associated with this special musical style. Anyone could be a rock star. One must be a true musician to play the music of the classical / progressive musicians who gave us this great style of music.
Eric, I'm totally non-musical, just a fan of the best band ever, ELP. Sadly, never saw them but did get to finally see Carl & his "new" band in March 2018 and OMGosh...he is STILL a force to be reckoned with! Plays with passion and energy of a man half his age...and he had just turned 68 the week before I saw him. See my comments above about trying to get ELP nominated into HOF in 2018 (inducted in 2019). Even if you don't like HOF, please, write a letter to the HOF NC, describing what you said above b/c that is what the HOF Nom Comm looks for when nominating artist/bands. And if Moody Blues finally got in this year, it's also time for ELP to join them!!! Thanks!!

I don't normally pay as much attention to the specifics of the drum part, but this song especially, and all ELP songs pushed the drumming to grab your attention.
When I saw them playing 'Pirates' from the 3rd row (directly in front of Greg Lake) in the Fox Theater in Atlanta, the energy coming off the stage blew my hair back -- such a thrill seeing my musical heroes play one of my favorite pieces by them!
I'm still amazed at what 3 guys can do! I saw them way back in the mid-70s and in the 80s, and they are flabbergasting at times. A great piece, this-from a great, overlooked album. Each one of them are among the best in their fields. Great video, Thanks!

Didnt get a chance to see them live until 90 born in 65 so alittle too young in the heyday. My 7 and 8 year old boys love the music and a 68 year ol friend set my boys up with some drumsticks to practice with. He was a friend of Joe Morello,who Carl respected and he loved the fact" my little boys listened to real music....and they didnt run around with their pants fallin off their arses!!!!"LOL
An epic song of derring do and days of yore. Peter Sinfield has to be one of the greatest to put pen to paper and make music. Nothing like this could be ever written again. November 1976, this was played on the Old Grey Whistle Test and was hooked, 46 years later and I've never heard anything to match it.
God, all 3 of these menalways played (and sang) their hearts out. I have never seen musicians like them, who continually gave their audiences 100% of their talent and effort. And man, what a show they put out. And Greg, bless his heart with his heavy cigarette habit and COPD, definitely had a change in the range and tone of his voice by the time this concert took place. That could not have been easy for him, since he was the consummate performer and perfectionist. But rather than compare his voice to when he was younger, still, his 'new' voice was just as good, especially when you consider what he was dealing with in his health. I love that man, and am so sad that he left us so early due to a habit that he never quite had victory over. But I like his huskier voice. Yes, he could not reach the high notes as well, but then he never really could entirely, even when he was young, and well.
It sucks that nobody, not even Emerson, can replicate the great sound of the Yamaha GX-1. He told me that before he unloaded the GX-1 in '95 that he has all the GX-1 sounds but I have yet to hear them during any performance. It is the epitome of this piece.
+curly437 About the GX's sound. I actually hear many GX-1 samples in this track, Bob!. But sampling can only go so far. A few pointers:The quikening modulationeffect of the GX-1 which Emerson uses at the beginning is hard to imitate. Furthermore you must try to isolate the actual sound of the instrument from the accoustics that accompany the original recordings. The GX-1 had no individual outputs and was therefore often recorded over microphones placed before its massive speaker system, picking up a lot of studio acoustics in the process. That's also the reason why some of the sounds in this vid sound rather cut short. I hear virtually no hall acoustics. They would help because stuff would then automatically sound less dry. I can go on for hours but I hope you get the picture a bit already.
Loosing Keith Emserson is such a waste. Especially the circumtances are heartbraking. His left hand was better then most peoples 2 hands together. Composing on paper, MIDI, DAW's. So many possibilities would still have been open to him. I for instance still hoped a second piano concerto would one day come. Maybe it sounds arrogant to think I could have changed anything but I wish I would have had the chance to talk him out of it. Even if the fame has mostly gone (or never came at all as in my case); the music still goes on. He should not have forgotten that.
Judge not lest ye be judged...he went out on his own terms...he hurt us all...and there will always be a part of me who will not forgive him for that...but that is my problem

I am sorry that ELP never recorded another album. That short part of "Crossing The Rubicon" was supposedly part of a much longer piece of music. Rumors have it that it was recorded but sadly it was never released to the public. RIP Keith and Greg ! Long live Carl Palmer !!! ELP FOREVER !!!!!!

OK version. 77&78 (because of GX-1 and Alembic 8 string bass) were best and 86 was even better...for me.... The GX-1 was still used AND was midi'd, so the cellos and stuff in the beginning were more powerful.

I saw this tour in Quebec city in the summer of 1992, one of my best show I've ever seen.
