- Tituss Burgess was the Lion and Nikki M. James (Tony winner/"The Book of Mormon") was Dorothy in Des McAnuff's hi-tech production of "The Wiz" at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2006. With Michael Benjamin Washington and Rashad Naylor. "Be a Lion" begins at 3:57
Thank you again for posting such gifts for your community here!
Had the pleasure of swinging this show. I always cried watching Nikki and Titus sing this. Still do 😢 this show would have been such a gift to so many on Broadway. The cast is so talented.
Do you remember the cast and if you don't mind could you list them.
“Be A Lion” is my all time favorite musical theater song. Makes me cry anytime I hear it. This is one of the best renditions I’ve ever seen. Wow… just, WOW! I wish I had a chance to see this live… ❤️
It makes me cry too and the way THEY did this was incomparable!
David Alan Grier as The Wiz, Nikki M. James as Dorothy, Titus Burgess as Lion, Rashad Naylor as Scarecrow, Michael Benjamin Washington
as Tinman, E. Faye Butler as Evillene, Orville Mendoza as Uncle Henry, and Valarie Pettiford as Aunt Em. Heather Lee as Addaperle
vocals for days. singing for their lives
what a great "Be a Lion" - Nikki really shines
Jesus this is my favorite thing Nikki M. James has ever sung. Like I never feels like she quite gets to shine in the roles she gets, THIS though THIS is Perfect.
Lord they can sing!!!!
I CAN NOT BELIEVE you have this! I saw this production and remember the entire theater shaking on this number. I'd never heard of either of them. When I saw Great Comet in the downtown tent, she was there and I approached her table and said "The first time I saw you was in the Wiz at La Jolla and I've been a huge fan ever since" which surprised her since it was so long ago. She and her table were so sweet and appreciative and she signed my program. Total theater-nerd moment. Thanks for posting!
If you were lucky enough to see this live (which I did 3 times), you will never forget it. Nikki and Tituss were incredible!
These two great performers taking us there and beyond. Pure theater magic.
Saw this and have been looking everywhere for footage!
not me crying at work watching this
Thanks Hope for more Wiz

I’ve been looking for this for years ! We need more of this such a gem
Been looking for this for years! Thank you!! Any more 😃?
I have been looking for videos of this for years!! I will never understand why this revival didn’t make it to NY!
Ahhhhh I love that you have this! I was a stitcher in the costume shop for this production-- such great memories!
I would have died to see that. That is such an epic version of Be a Lion
Amazing. 💚
Dear Aurora,
In 1965, I lived in a housing project called VANDERVEER STATES in Brooklyn. I lived in building 1414 New York Avenue. Right next to 1414 was 1416. In that building, lived Stephanie MILLS who starred in the original on Broadway, information I'm certain you are aware of.
At that time Stephanie MILLS who lived on a third floor, would open her living room window and sing in full voice "TO SIR WITH LOVE", which was at the time a big hit movie starring the great Sidney POITIER. Stephanie would sing "Can't hurry Love", a Diana Ross hit and really lots of MOTOWN repertoire. She performed with brilliant aplomb and to a full audience of the people who lived there. I can testify that even at her young age her voice, specifically the BELTING was fully formed. Years later when I saw her in "The Wiz" my entire family went to see her and we all told the people around us:
"She was our neighbor!!!"
Wow, what a cast! Thanks for the video!
this production looks amazing thank you for sharing
Great showing!
Fascinating. The Wiz in the round and it appears a tiny round at that. I can't wrap my head around how this was staged. Would love to see more.
The Wiz is such a tricky show to pull off because the music is fabulous but the script is dated. This is fantastic! Looks like they freshened the script up with a rewrite. I like the staging, set, and overall design. I would love to see more songs clips from this production. This should have transferred to Broadway. Broadway needs a really good revival of The Wiz. I know they talked about bringing The Wiz live to Broadway but that never materialized...thank God! It was good for tv and there were some wonderful performers in that but I don't think we needed to see it again the same way on Broadway after seeing it air on TV. Also, there was the Ashanti production at City Center. That was a good cast too but I didnt like the production designs on that one. I know there was also a tour in 1997 that did some similar to this production with the tech aspects and it featured Grace Jones as the wicked witch. I would love to have seen that...I'm sure her rendition of Don't Nobody Bring Me No Bad Knew was something unique. You have any clips from that production or her?
I saw that Grace Jones production - I loved it!
@@kevinkiniry3941 where did you see the grace jones one @?
@@tpettaway Philadelphia - Tower Theatre I think
@Philip Corso Oh how I enjoyed that Jones/Bryson bus n' truck tour...almost feel naughty loving it as much as I did! Lower budget, minimalist design, fog machines for 2+hrs...but the VOCALS. Soul & variety. Grace Jones definitely commanded the stage, despite "No Bad News" being a slower, darker arrangement. Peabo Bryson as the Wiz brought the show to a halt whenever he spoke but, the vocals were delicious. Incredible singing all-around, actually (CeCe Peniston, Tasha Scott, Tony Terry, Romelda Benjamin, etc.); wish they had been recorded.
@@igetallthemailaha I saw that production at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. I found it unforgettable as the singing was spectacular. Tasha Scott was a wonderful Dorothy, Tony Terry as the Tinman, CeCe Peniston as Glinda. Ms. Jones's "Bad News" was a hoot. It was rearranged to be. more industrial gritty disco. She and her buff male backup dancers suggested a leather dungeon vibe.
thats what we call sanging, not singing, sanging, cause its already done
Hi if you have the whole production I would love to see it, I thought I’d asked , but if not thanks for sharing ☺️👍
Thanks for posting! Would be nice if you could post "He's the Wiz" and "No Bad News"
What a gem! Do you by chance have the full version of this or the 1997 Rent with Neil Patrick Harris?
This is so goddamn fierce lol
Do you have the entire show?
I cant feel any energy and this is shocking because Tituss is all about energy...

This set and costume design is horrendous.
This is a perfect example of how "updating" can ruin a song even if you have amazing singers.
Yes, really did not like this arrangement.
