Desiree Coleman, Stacy Francis, D'atra Hicks, Jennifer Holiday, Stephanie Mills, Melba Moore & Nell Carter will always be inconquerable Black legendary broadway Queens
Awesome, she is one of the most talented singer that has never gotten her recognition. She has bubbled under for years and has more to offer than most singers today. Glad to see her finally on you tube.
I knew Desiree when we were teenagers. We used to sing in a choir together. She was a beautiful girl with a beautiful voice. Got lots of exposure. I could never understand why she didn't blow up until I read some of the comments here. I have to agree that with all the great things she is - what she is not is a great entertainer. She does not connect with the audience.. and that's very important.
That was the taping of the fox late night show that was originally hosted by Joan Rivers. Once, Arsenio Hall guest hosted he received rave reviews. And he became the host. I was at that taping and was so amazed by Desiree Coleman's range.
Wow! She's covered up and has talent to boot. How things have changed. I remember seeing her in Mama I want to Sing when I was young. She went up so many octaves I thought the windows would shatter. Absolutely loooooove her voice.
All these overly critical comments. She was literally a debut performer in these videos just like when mariah hit the scene. They gave everything. No she was not a seasoned performer yet. She was a young girl who had amazing voice. But she is seasoned performer now.
Have you ever felt, as though you head is about to explode? I hope i am not getting ill. But if thats what happening i appreciate it. What a singer, what a voice. absolutely lovely. Thank you for this.
If you believe Desiree has "major pitch problems" why are so many of her videos favorited in your RUclips profile? This performance is flawless and you know it!
I am confused by this one. It's like she can clearly sing (very clearly and very well) but something is missing at the same time. Her runs are also a bit odd because it feels like they are more about showcasing the technical aspects of her voice alone rather than doing that and enhancing the song itself. Amazing raw talent though. Many singers have to be shown how to channel what they have effectively. Oddly Patti LaBelle was one who readily admits this.
One of the best singers, but she doesn't seem like someone who wants to dominate the audience and drive them wild. She wants distance from the audience. Even her hair is tied up and her clothes are very very modest and piled on.
Jesus this was a singing child who did not get what she deserved! She was a real singer like Shanice, Tracie Spencer and so many others and who are we stuck with Now!!!
God told her to "sing for me" Thats what she's doing. Hey, i am not even a churchgoer, but i can see she has an ora about her. She is a lovely human being.
Why the hell didn't the band modulate with Desiree at 3:16? I love the sa-pran-uh sangin', but them musicians need to be shot...Be A Lion has to be delivered by everybody, not just the vocalist.
@CDawg When you say modulate, do you mean "key chage"? If so, the band did not modulate and neither did she. The key never changed at 3:16. The singer just chose alternate notes in the same key.
Maybe it's good that she didn't become famous. She may have even decided to chose her family first. Hollywood is a beast. She's stable with a stable family.
hold on i gotta here ashanti range cause this woman pulled some jennifer holiday shit and yall said ashanti put her to shame like fa real i'm bout to watch ashantis version now cause i don't believe i've herd it who sung it originally
@jazzscherzo Please. She's definitely got it. She just doesn't USE it. For example, she's more beautiful than Beyonce'. Her voice blows Beyonce's out the water. Yet, she plays-down her beauty, and even plays-down her singing. Meanwhile, Beyonce' plays her's up. I do give props to Dez's integrity. Beyonce' plays innocent, yet, works the stroll, more or less. Though Desiree's not "commercially" successful, she seems to be more successful, than most, as far as real life goes.
MySugarWallz what the hell does Beyoncé have to do with her. Y’all haters will always bring Beyoncé to a fight she ain’t worried about. No offense, but if she was meant to be greater than Beyoncé she would have been. Please stop comparing and just let this young lady get her grace.
But you're a hypocite if you say you don't mean your comments as a slam because I read your other comments about her and they are not constructive but borderline vicious. And to your comment that "the court of public opinion sides with you": Are you telling me that no major recording artist has pitch problems?
Wow! Chills! I watched the movie version of Mama I want to sing. Besides Ms. LaBelle one Desiree gave me goose bumps. Today she'd have to dress half naked, gyrate, wear pounds of make up as well as have a 20 in. waist in order to get coverage in the industry. She is more in the Whitney, Mariah, Christina & Celine catagory. Why Ms. Colemans stands out to me is that her voice is clear, pure as well as powerful. She doesn't over sing like Christina. Her voice has a prettier quality than Mariah's.
Wonderful voice! But the poster who said she has or haf pitch problems hears it just as I and some others. For positive proof, listen to her sing in her stage performance of "Mama, I Want to Sing" on this site. She was a 4 out of 10...She was sounding flat, off-pitch...almost tone death like someone who could not sing, but we know she can SANG! Again, I love her and have been wondering how her career is fairing. #myopinion
She's alright. She's no Stephanie Mills though. She sounds like a church singer though and not a Broadway singer. Hitting high pitch and long notes isn't the only thing that makes you a great singer. She needs to sing from the heart and soul. She didn't do that here.
Desiree Coleman, Stacy Francis, D'atra Hicks, Jennifer Holiday, Stephanie Mills, Melba Moore & Nell Carter will always be inconquerable Black legendary broadway Queens
What did Stacy Francis play in?
Girl bye!
@@MosesJD86 you replying to this 9 years later. Fuck outta here Ms. thang
@@CelestialGatez Mama, I Want To Sing, Footloose, Hair
i dont see desiree, stacy and d'atra...as black legendary broadway queens! your pushing it girl!
Just came back to watch this again!
She went to my school and when I saw her in person, she had an angelic glow. Super pretty.
She was the star in "MOMMA I WANNA SING". Her voice is off the charts in excellence!
Awesome, she is one of the most talented singer that has never gotten her recognition. She has bubbled under for years and has more to offer than most singers today. Glad to see her finally on you tube.
She's what you call an Angelic presence and only those with that Spirit can and will connect!
Desiree Coleman...what I remember most about her is this woman can truly sing. Beautiful rendition of this song. Amazing range.
Such a very beautiful voice! So amazing to her sing!
I knew Desiree when we were teenagers. We used to sing in a choir together. She was a beautiful girl with a beautiful voice. Got lots of exposure. The Most High did not want her to be an entertainer. If you truly sang with her in the choir, then you should understand where I am coming from.
She's wonderful but not really listenable.
@@femalegeefemalegee9740
Then stay in the Church and sing gospel. If you choose to go into popular music, you have to entertain.
This is a flawless performance by an amazing singer!
I love her!
Wish there were still singers like this today. She's great.
I knew that this was going to be over the top when she said " light-a-ning and fright-a-ning".
Oh my I remember this as if it was yesterday, we were singing in the same group then and going ot the same church!!!!
Thanks for the post
This Song is ICONIC and one of the best from THE WIZ.❤💋😊❤💋😊❤💋

They could really sing in the 80's
Facts
Cher : Not Madonna..
I'd give anything to see Whitney live in the 80s
You sure "ARE A LION" Desiree!!!!!! your spirit touches me everytime!!!
Her eyes are amazing!

beautiful!
I have been looking for a recording of this for years. Love Desiree singing this.
Me and my dad watched this in real god rest his soul he put me on and here i am
Her mix belt voice is so strong and heavy, like Whitney Houston's. Even more fascinating because she is a soprano
She’s so pretty
Sing Girl! I remember when I viewed this performance on Television long ago! lol
Have you ever felt, as though you head is about to explode? I hope i am not getting ill. But if thats what happening i appreciate it. What a singer, what a voice. absolutely lovely. Thank you for this.
DITTO!!!. No one has inspired me, touched me or made me cry more than Desiree (which by the way is pronounced ree not ray)
This gave me chills. People are harsh
@CDawg You're right. That kind of threw me. ANY good church band would have known to take it up a step with her right there. WHACK!
If you believe Desiree has "major pitch problems" why are so many of her videos favorited in your RUclips profile?

Sang Mrs. Coleman-Jackson...
amen!!! Sang girl!!
It really bothers me that she never had a major career. Her voice, although it might come as a bit theatrical, but it's AMAZING 🥰
Beautiful sweet old sweet friend Desiree Coleman, miss Patty you made a mistake she has five octaves, five-octave range.
Her contralto range is forced. So no 4.
hahah i remember him from COMING TO AMERICA!!!!!!!! loved him
wow... just wow
Yes, she's very pretty and a great singer!
Yes. Yes yes

Wow. O.O
She's over singing the song. Relax, you're not going to out do Stephanie, I don't care how many high notes you hit. But you have a voice.
@deeblk07 you r so right
Maybe it's good that she didn't become famous. She may have even decided to chose her family first. Hollywood is a beast. She's stable with a stable family.
A beautiful talented, woman of 4:21 God. Married with three children.

She is very pretty. She can sing her behind off but her voice sounded forced. Sounds like a 5 octave range to me instead. I think? 🙏🏻
not "LIGHT-A-NING" 🤣🤣🤣
Listen to Stephanie’s original. That’s how she sang it too. And how the writer intended.
She’s clearly talented. She even has Patti’s approval. She needs more training. That’s all.
That was alright.
She would've been corrupted in hollywood like Whitney Mariah and Beyonce...
her voice is amazing but she does not connect with the audience.

+XanderZane Umm where do you think 98% of black singers come from. THE CHURCH. Don't be naive.
Amazing voice and beautiful girl but boring . Think that’s why she never blew up.
I guess Patti Labelle doesn't know a good singer when she hears one...
Well it was nice. But it's not in the original key.... so that's cheating a bit. Lol :) She doesnt have any soul at all.
