You’re really good at analyzing lyrics!! My wife is a Christian and I’m struggling as to what I believe. I’ve been soul searching for decades. I have a hard time relating to pastors but I listen to your videos to educate myself about Christianity. I wanna get to that peaceful and calm place of faith before I die.
Yeah it's pretty hard to disregard the laws of physics which all point to no outside interference at any point in the 13.8 billion years of the universe plus we don't even know if we have free will or not because of the lag in your our brains(speed of neuron communication) . For those 2 reasons the god of the bible can not exist, but thats just me.
That's your interpretation... There's too much order for there not to be a creator, and the God of the Bible is the only one who doesn't actually contradict. Only difference is other religions are blatant contradictions, but God makes you work with Him and search his word to fully reconcile a "contradiction"..
Don't overthink it, you don't need to be religious to be happy. You can always find something that fills the void for you and make your own religion out of it! Personally I love music and I'm dedicating myself to it, as well as other forms of art. So find your passion and enjoy it as much as you can, and do everything you ever wanted to do, so you die with no regrets. And if you feel like there's nothing worth living for or empty, that's also alright. You don't need to force yourself to live like everyone else. Find your own way to enjoy the trivial things in life and live at the moment, don't overthink the future and get stressed out about it. Best wishes to you!
@@adecentdelinquent8986I spent several years actively trying to disprove Yahweh's existence, but I was still searching for truth even if it ended up being Christianity. So much from other religions borrow from Christianity, throughout history. So much of the new age stuff now uses Christian terms and a new one "Christ consciousness". If the Bible were hyperlinked to referenced verses, it'd be the most hyperlinked document in history. What does that mean and why is it important? It means that it's one coherent work, in spite of the number of authors and years from Moses to John. Nature itself does indeed testify of God, just as the Bible says. Look up examples of the fibonacci sequence in nature. As far as God's law, it was unprecedented. Look at the cultures around Israel and how they conducted themselves. A lot of these other cultures had child sacrifice.. Israel had animal.. As one example on the superiority of God's law.. Compare Freud's id and Jung's shadow to the Bible verses saying no one is free from sin. Hopefully someone else can cite the one I tried to reference and others.. There's a few. To try to tie this off. All humanity must repent, acknowledge the sin nature and turn away from it, and believe that Jesus Christ is the final sacrifice for sin that covers all sin throughout humanity because of Jesus divine nature.
Check out Kevin Zadai. He has a lot of videos on here. I had a hard time with most pastors as well. He doesn't preach religion, he preaches relationship. Good stuff!
The guitarist explained the song in an interview a long time ago 'This was written about a guy the band knows who can only do great, inspired, stuff when he's high. The words "Jesus won't you F--king whistle, something but the past and gone" is actually referring to how this guy kept talking about the same old stuff over and over again, as in, "Christ almighty, can't we talk about something new???" '
My all time favorite band. So much emotion in all Maynards lyrics. He also has the song called H and opiate. Those of us that have been there or who are there understand this all to well.
Opiate is (also) about religion according to maynard. It was off their first ep and its named after a quote by Marx, something like "religion is the opiate of the masses".
As someone struggling with addiction this whole song is a perfect analogy. You make promises when you're wasted and you can't keep them when you're sober
I always saw it was exasperation with everyone who would say that he needs help with his addiction, rather than a literal call to Jesus. "Whatever! Won't you just let it go! I'm sick of hearing it!"
Just a thought. His posture and mannerisms were meant to replicate that of an active alcoholic/ addict. The sad state. The imbalances. The pity. The zombie like existence. The embarrassment. The confusion. This is what you are, this what I saw, this is what I am, this is what is left of me, kind of message. To live that way AND see others that way is not easy on the eyes. So for more visual he adds it to the performance. Or not. I’m wrong quite often. Used to it lol.
You my friend, are doing wonderful things here. I'm not a Christian , but I respect how your doing your work... all Christian's should be put trying to save the lost ones instead of condemning them to hell. Mad respect
The reasoning for Maynard's odd actions during live concerts is because he has horrible stage fright and that is how he deals with it. Sometimes he will even sing with his back to a massive crowd.
Regular guy that’s actually not true not hating he just never reveals why I saw old footage saying he likes to see danny drum playin and another one saying he feels the back is the best spot for a vocalists back when tool was not famous he still sang in the front but not acting odd in my eyes i believe he does it to express his music
He has no stage-fright issues, he's said it himself. Look at his performances in Puscifer and A Perfect Circle. He's said, numerous times, that he chooses to perform out of the limelight with Tool to give the other 3 members more presence on stage, and use his vocals simply as another instrument equal to Danny, Justin, and Adams' skilled musical roles. In other words, it's not about him, but the combined unit of 4 guys who know what they're doing.
Just saw them live the other day. For most the performance he stood on platforms in the back turned to the side. There were a few moments I noticed him shaking. Over all though there was something something very iconic about his posture, it was almost like he was praying, but in the calling to the heaven way, not the bowing way.
The way Maynard was acting is he wasn't sober and showing fighting addiction and he was bent over and broken like addicts can be and he shows it and its such a powerful act showing his words are so strong.
The part of the song that has the line, “I will elevate you,” actually works better when you look at it NOT as the user speaking but as the actual DRUG, saying that it will give you power and vision.
If someone trolls you for your opinion of TOOL, then they are not a true TOOL fan. You can say what you want to, even if you're not serious. Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here. Gotta divide it all right in two.
I don't understand why fans would be rough on you. I really appreciate someone giving the music a chance, giving an honest diving interpretation. It's how the music is meant to be heard. Maynard has said he usually leaves lyrics vague to let the listener understand their own interpretation. I really love your videos, giving a non judgemental listen and dissection of some wonderful and genius music. And being able to appreciate it, even when you don't agree with every subject mentioned. Thanks guys. Appreciate it. You are the guys I like to sit down and have conversations with.
Idk if this has been said yet, it probably has, but his stage presence in this song is a direct representation of a drug addict who is at war with themselves wishing they could just be sober. On top of that, you are taking the double negative to literally. You have to think like an addict in this song. “Why can’t we not be sober” could translate to “why do I have to be intoxicated”, just feel the raw message of the song.
You can always count on Maynard to look pretty strange on stage. One of the times I saw tool live his whole body was painted blue and he had on only a speedo. An eccentric guy to say the least.
Yes. As Tool fans we are unreasonably aggressive about our love for this band, and perhaps a little aggressive about introducing others to it. But come on… it’s Tool.
Someone may have covered this by now, but the song explores artists' -- painters, writers, musicians, etc. -- desire to create without chemically altering their minds coupled with an inability to do so, eventuating relapse.
You guys should really listen to the more inspirational & spiritual side of Tool. Namely the entire Lateralus album, which most agree is the high point of their career. Song 1 The Grudge - Release your grudges before they drag you down Song 2 The Patient - Stay patient in the face of adversity Song 3 Schism - Communication is the most important part of human relationship Song 4 Parabola - Embrace each moment you're alive and breathing Song 5 Lateralus - Walking the line between the divine and human aspects of our true nature Song 6 Reflection - Let go of our ego to transcend into what is truly spiritual
The song is specifically about somebody who is in a band who gets creative influence and writes his best material when drunk or high. It is the realization that I work better under the influence of mind-altering substances despite its destructiveness.
This is just one of my personal thoughts on the line " why can't we not be sober". I've always understood it to be asking why he is UNABLE to be sober. That his addiction has him so strongly, that he's asking why he can't be sober as in UNABLE. Im VERY familiar with addiction and addicts and sobriety, thru programs and without a program. That's just one of the ways it spoke to me, personally. As far as Jesus and the whistle, the best my mind has made of it was him asking why Jesus hasn't " whistled" to get his attention and make him able/ willing to get off drugs/ alcohol. The great thing about lines like those is that they will mean something different to every addict, to every loved one of an addict and however it speaks to you, the point is that it speaks to you.
This song is beyond intense. When I see his performance I recall the rest of that type of journey. I appreciate seeing him fight for his life on stage while singing. I can recognise that energy.
Out of every song I've heard, Sober is the one that convinced me to buy a bass and make music. The intensity, emotion and pure musical prowess showed in this song made my love for music grow to the point it is now
Sidenote: I'm not technically a god fearing man. I love theology and everything related to it and from what I gathered is that if God loves us he wouldn't "force" us to live by his commandments. It's encouraged and will guarantee you a place in the big beautiful place in the sky but not a necessity for living a good life. He loves you so don't be sober for him. Be sober for yourself so you can live a fulfilling life. But that's just my two cents. I love hearing y'all's thoughts and beliefs about a song I took at face value most of the time. Cheers boys!
I heard the lyric change was at the request of the concert organizes due to religious differences due to playing in a different country. If someone said that already. Credit to u.
What religion allows "Mother Mary" but no "Jesus"?:-) But seriously, the song was quite often censored when aimed for broadcasting. Imho more because the f* word.
I’m 10 years sober and first this channel has been so great for me I can’t thank you enough I love your videos and the breakdowns you do love it!! But this song hits hard for me as I said I’m a alcoholic in recovery and to hear you. Is say that makes me love you even more. Thank you sir!
I think this song, as with most of Tool's work, has a dual meaning. One being of personal addiction but also about society's addiction to religion (opiate of the masses). He is crying out for something new and for people not to have blind faith in religious leaders that will take advantage of you. Also you can interpret the shadow at the beginning of the song as being religion. I do not totally agree with Maynard's view on religion but from what I have read on his experiences with his mother's church congregation I can understand why he thinks the way he does.
Not religious at all, but love these videos for a different perspective as well as being a massive tool fan. I'm also someone who suffered with addiction in my younger days much like you Rob. If anyone is reading this and you're struggling with addiction believe me it is worth it in the end, there is light at the end of tunnel, things can get better, stay strong.
Sidenote before you get to it, the song isn't actually about jesus, just uses a lot of references to Jesus. I can't for the life of me remember who it was actually about
Adam Jones is the only guitarist in Tool. Yes the song is about a friend if his who was an alcoholic. Maynard is actually an athlete, who I am sure has done has experimentation, but the song is about a friend with addiction issues.
And the lyrics in the second verse “I am just a worthless liar...etc” Always felt he was shifting perspective from the addict to the substance itself. Giving personality and sympathy to the drug itself. As if the substance itself is saying “feel bad for me. Don’t leave me...”
Great video! I’ve been waiting some time for this one! So glad y’all got around to it. Thanks for continuing to help others through your work. May God continue to bless y’all! Much love!
Posture of Maynard is part of performance. It capture drunk person. Maynard is so creative when it comes to performance on stage. I love how he embracing the role.
I love TOOL and I know the lead singer had horrible stage fright. He definitely planned his performance to symbolize an addiction personified by his stage presence. Legendary artist.
Maynard has SEVERE stage freight. He has to embody a character to overcome it (hence the staring). Most of their live shows he spends behind the band. Tool uses Maynards voice as an instrument more than as a vocalist.
He’s at the back of the stage purely for audio and visual reasons (all band members can see each other which is critical for timing) Nothing at all to do with stage fright
I took it as said by the vice or addiction and not the user. The addiction is saying why can't we not be sober. I will lift you up just enough to tear you down.
I am just a worthless liar I am just an imbecile I will only complicate you Trust in me and fall as well I will find a center in you I will chew it up and leave I will work to elevate you Just enough to bring you down Those lyrics really hit me hard as a former addict that tried juggling addiction and relationships. Because of my selfishness (I was just a worthless liar, I was just an imbecile/trust in me and fall as well) I drained her of love and kindness (I found the center in her) until she was destroyed and I just left for the next victim.(worked to elevate her just enough to bring her down/chewed her up and left) Praise God I've been delivered from that but, those memories haunt me daily. 😔
Maynard writes the most subversive lyrics ever. Props for really digging into it, bringing up the censored frase as well as the double negation, which was hauting me for some time.
He emulates addiction so straight. That he even rarely blink. Maynard really taught me to this performance and songs that doing stuff regarding addiction I might look like that. And its kind a painful.
Hello, my name is Garrett and I’ve been watching your videos for a while (mostly the “TOOL” related ones) and I noticed that your son doesn’t have many of his own real opinions except for the instruments in the band, he seems to just agree with what you say on religion, I was raised in a religious (Jehovah’s Witness/Christian because they use the same bible) family and I didn’t have many opinions of my own until I listened to TOOL (the song “Opiate” to be exact) I realized that “God” wants us to be happy and to Love one another whole heartedly and not judge one another. I just feel that we need to accept that we are all on this planet (“Mother Earth” as you so eloquently put it in your “Humbling River” video) together and we just need to treat each other with kindness and respect because we never know what someone is going through! Thank you for your time and keep your third eye open!!
Maynard is a musical genius. Pitch perfect. One of the most impactful and memorable performances. I will find a center in you. I will chew it up and leave. A terrifying and Brilliant alliteration on Addiction. He is speaking both to the effects of the addition, and speaking from the point of view of the addiction. Glad you're still doing TOOL either way. God bless this ministry.
Kind of wishing I did do the original video. It makes sense that it would be the personification of the drugs or alcohol now that I think about it. Very clever.
I have bugged him incessantly about Parabol Porabola and he has said twice now it's coming. I know it's not the same type of video as the older stuff but yet it is and it still definitely qualifies as "strange" ...lol
I bet you are great Pastor and obviously dad as well. I too am a Christian and musician that has been a Metalhead as long as I can remember. And in most people's minds those two things aren't supposed to mix. Sadly if more people would actually understand that the lyrics are a lot deeper and has meaning that can tell a wonderful story. Tool are musical geniuses.
This video has Maynard up front and center!! I've been to 2 concerts in Toronto, (im a Canadian girl lol) and he hid behind a sheet, all we could see was his silhouette! He was never visible. However, we(my sister and myself) to the very front of the stage and my sister was dancing and then Maynard began dancing exactly the way my sister was!! We were beyond thrilled!!

Maynard very often does double meaning lyrics.
The song "The Pot" is a perfect example
I have always felt the same way, it’s the addiction talking.
It is...the high will make you feel great again, but after everytime you do it and come down, your life is a little more miserable than it was before.

I'm a simple woman. I see a Robert Houghton reacts to Tool, I click.

Good stuff!
The guitarist explained the song in an interview a long time ago
'This was written about a guy the band knows who can only do great, inspired, stuff when he's high. The words "Jesus won't you F--king whistle, something but the past and gone" is actually referring to how this guy kept talking about the same old stuff over and over again, as in, "Christ almighty, can't we talk about something new???" '
I've read the same thing......overall MJK has alluded to he does not abide in patience the 'addict'
which guitarist? Adam Jones from tool, or from Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty - because the song predates Tool...
@@99bajakid Jones
My all time favorite band. So much emotion in all Maynards lyrics. He also has the song called H and opiate. Those of us that have been there or who are there understand this all to well.
H.
So damn good...
...the whole album, infact
Opiate is (also) about religion according to maynard. It was off their first ep and its named after a quote by Marx, something like "religion is the opiate of the masses".
As someone struggling with addiction this whole song is a perfect analogy. You make promises when you're wasted and you can't keep them when you're sober
Where is 46 & 2!!!! Get after that song NOW!!!!
I would love to see them react to that song
Great tune I’d like to see, but Eulogy shoulda been covered already tbh
@@spacejesus8856 agreed as well!
Its just ahead of you!
I thought they already did that one
I always thought the line "Jesus won't you fu*king whistle" as being a call for help. It's like asking for Jesus to let his presence be known.
The first time that is the correct line. IDK the reason it was changed for this performance.
I suspect this is because he was told "This is for MTV ... keep it clean."
It could in part be a call for help, but I think its more about "just show me that you really exist".
I always saw it was exasperation with everyone who would say that he needs help with his addiction, rather than a literal call to Jesus. "Whatever! Won't you just let it go! I'm sick of hearing it!"
@@Misrabelle I think you nailed it. Tired of broken record talking. Besides, directly addressing Jesus would be unmaynardly:-).
He was playing a role. In this song he is addiction personified. The song is written from the perspective of the drug/addiction.
I think you're spot on.
Maynard is a unicorn in the metal world. He really is brilliant!
You my friend, are doing wonderful things here. I'm not a Christian , but I respect how your doing your work... all Christian's should be put trying to save the lost ones instead of condemning them to hell. Mad respect
Thank you for the encouragement. 🙏❤️
The reasoning for Maynard's odd actions during live concerts is because he has horrible stage fright and that is how he deals with it. Sometimes he will even sing with his back to a massive crowd.
Did not know that. I struggle with stage fright myself. Maybe I should do a sermon in my PJs as well 😂😂
Regular guy that’s actually not true not hating he just never reveals why I saw old footage saying he likes to see danny drum playin and another one saying he feels the back is the best spot for a vocalists back when tool was not famous he still sang in the front but not acting odd in my eyes i believe he does it to express his music
This doesn't look so much like stage fright. It looks more like he is playing the part he is singing. An addict. Tortured soul. Lost. Crippled. Dying.
Just saw them live the other day. For most the performance he stood on platforms in the back turned to the side. There were a few moments I noticed him shaking. Over all though there was something something very iconic about his posture, it was almost like he was praying, but in the calling to the heaven way, not the bowing way.
As an agnostic and a long time Tool fan I really appreciate your analysis, open-mindedness and opinions. Thank you.
The way Maynard was acting is he wasn't sober and showing fighting addiction and he was bent over and broken like addicts can be and he shows it and its such a powerful act showing his words are so strong.
I felt like he was more trying to personify and portray addiction itself rather than an addict, which is why he is moving in non human like way.
Awesome! love TOOL, as a fellow christian (catholic btw) I am excited that you are doing this! Your analysis are always spot on, keep it up!
The part of the song that has the line, “I will elevate you,” actually works better when you look at it NOT as the user speaking but as the actual DRUG, saying that it will give you power and vision.
Yeap, spot on. The song is a back and forth conversation.
This was a great festival. Man how I miss the 90's and my youth, pastor Rob. Prayers brother, we're almost there.
If someone trolls you for your opinion of TOOL, then they are not a true TOOL fan. You can say what you want to, even if you're not serious.
Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability
To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here.
Gotta divide it all right in two.
This man gets it.
I have that quote printed and hung on my office wall.
No way! Your doing this reaction? Sober live has been known to grow channels quickly. I've seen it and this is a good day. Thanks
😎
The RUclips channel Beth Roars is a singing teacher and she does a reaction video to this live Tool performance
This 🔝!!!
They always have to apply some Christianity to every review
13:47 … That’s what she said. You’re welcome.
He is portraying an addict, Great Musical Art
You guys should really listen to the more inspirational & spiritual side of Tool. Namely the entire Lateralus album, which most agree is the high point of their career.
Song 1 The Grudge - Release your grudges before they drag you down
Song 2 The Patient - Stay patient in the face of adversity
Song 3 Schism - Communication is the most important part of human relationship
Song 4 Parabola - Embrace each moment you're alive and breathing
Song 5 Lateralus - Walking the line between the divine and human aspects of our true nature
Song 6 Reflection - Let go of our ego to transcend into what is truly spiritual
I'd argue, The Patient is about Maynards mom. I might be wrong "Paranoid/Paralized vampire acts a little old", "But I am still right here..."
I always took this from the addictions perspective and not the addicts.
God bless you Pastor Rob! I'm Catholic and we need priests like you.
Huge Tool Fan here, the majority of us aren't jerks, just a little passionate. Love you guys and keep it up. Looking forward to more Tool reactions.
46&2 is must do for you guys! Great content! Carl Jung plays a big role in Tool philosophy.
Haha you're gonna LOVE this! Real raw emotion and energy.
When are you going to cover Tool’s Eulogy? It’s honestly a crime you’ve not visited it yet.
Space Lord monster magnet is what your name reminds me of
Space lord mother mother!!
i wish i would have read the comments before i posted lol
Sidenote before you get to it, the song isn't actually about jesus, just uses a lot of references to Jesus. I can't for the life of me remember who it was actually about

In the military this was classified a “thousand mile stare”..battle fatigue, a hypnosis of a sort
Adam Jones is the only guitarist in Tool. Yes the song is about a friend if his who was an alcoholic. Maynard is actually an athlete, who I am sure has done has experimentation, but the song is about a friend with addiction issues.
Great video guys, love how you put another dimension to the songs
The whole song is about addiction. Even his physical performance embodies addiction. You are correct that he looked possessed, by addiction...
When I saw Tool in Nashville a few years back Maynard stayed at the back of the stage, I could only see his shadow.
Saw them in February and it was the same way. He just stood to right of Danny most of the night.
Amazing reaction and discussion as always guy's. 🙂
Amon Amarth - Thousand Years Of Oppression 🤘🏻
And the lyrics in the second verse “I am just a worthless liar...etc”
Always felt he was shifting perspective from the addict to the substance itself. Giving personality and sympathy to the drug itself. As if the substance itself is saying “feel bad for me. Don’t leave me...”
💯
Great video! I’ve been waiting some time for this one! So glad y’all got around to it. Thanks for continuing to help others through your work. May God continue to bless y’all! Much love!
So excited for this!
Posture of Maynard is part of performance. It capture drunk person. Maynard is so creative when it comes to performance on stage. I love how he embracing the role.
"Eulogy" by Tool. Please!
Your last statement is perfect. Maynard is the 4th instrument, not the singer of the band
Have you seen him in the late 90s? He definitely doesnt have stage fright...
He’s at the back of the stage purely for audio and visual reasons (all band members can see each other which is critical for timing) Nothing at all to do with stage fright
I’ve seen this tossed around but never heard Maynard actually say it
I took it as said by the vice or addiction and not the user. The addiction is saying why can't we not be sober. I will lift you up just enough to tear you down.
Y'all should do "The Noose" by A Perfect Circle. Great song to start a conversation over.
I am just a worthless liar
I am just an imbecile
I will only complicate you
Trust in me and fall as well
I will find a center in you
I will chew it up and leave
I will work to elevate you
Just enough to bring you down
Those lyrics really hit me hard as a former addict that tried juggling addiction and relationships.
Maynard's actually a normal guy, but he always puts on a crazy stage performance

I always thought "I will work to elevate you just enough to bring you down" was the drugs or alcohol. I'm curious why you didn't watch the actual video. Maybe the copyright thing. But in the video he keeps going back to this box. He ties it up and hides it and then goes back and gets it out and cuts the ropes off and keeps going back. You should watch the actual video. Glad you're still doing TOOL either way. God bless this ministry.
Kind of wishing I did do the original video. It makes sense that it would be the personification of the drugs or alcohol now that I think about it. Very clever.
Do the original video too...we need your take on a tool video...if you've never watched one, they're a little "uuuhhhh......strange?"😂😂😂
I have bugged him incessantly about Parabol Porabola and he has said twice now it's coming. I know it's not the same type of video as the older stuff but yet it is and it still definitely qualifies as "strange" ...lol
