Maynard wrote that first verse when he was still in school. His art teacher was very supportive of him expressing himself.

Former alcoholic for 7 years, this song also hits a part of my core experience. Even after many years being sober, my memories make me wish I can go back and drink like I did again because it felt great, but I'm no longer as young and my health anxiety has turned me into a gym rat. I would either be in serious morbid health condition or dead if I continued to drink like i did.

One of my favorite tool songs of all time and such a heavy message

  • @richpeltier9519
    @richpeltier9519 3 года назад +17

I heard Maynard say in an interview that this song was inspired by the story of an artist (can't remember if it was someone he knew, or just read about), who struggled with alcoholism and drew his inspiration from drink. When he was drunk, his paintings were incredible. But he knew he couldn't sustain the drink, in order to remain "productive" artistically.
    Literally dying for their art.
That message/story is almost universally relatable.
Plus, how did we all rock so hard to a groove...in whatever fucked up time that was?
    Rich the Ancient Metal Beast

One of the things that Tool does very well, and Maynard James Keenan, is allowing you to interpret these things as you wish to interpret them. I’ve always taken this song as if it’s the alcohol/drug that is the one talking. It’s the vice’s voice.

Yeah. Addiction is a bitch. Alcohol had a very destructive influance on my family back then and for the years to come.

    Oxy- 12/31/22
Cocaine- only used once or twice a year at concerts now… the booze shockingly is what derailed my life

To me, one of the key lines are "mother mary wont you wisper, something but the past is done"
It just captures the meaninglessness og the automatic forgiveness of the church. "Won't you please do something else, other than forgiving me, I haven't forgiven myself, i am still doing it, give me some advice, yell at me, do something!!" Powerfull stuff!

I think you might be missing (like a lot of people do) in this song the line ..."Why can't we not be sober?" Maynard is very smart and that is an intentional double negative question. I don't think this song is about the push and pull feelings of an addict. I think this is straight from the POV of a self aware addict that has no intent on changing and Maynard is pointing out how toxic that kind of addict is.

    • @chaosoul-seanleeriggs369

Glad someone else gets this! Another line that is clear live in person but less so in the album is when he repeats the phrase "I just want to start this over", throughout the song, where he's actually stating more than once:
"I DON'T want to start this over"
Always loved that dichotomy and the double-entendres!
