AH YES - so I can always count on folks to straighten me out :) Somehow I got it in my head after looking the song up that it was a remaster and I guess even blew it on the bass which based on the comments is Justin - I stand corrected, AWWWRIGHT!!😎
Lol. Just clicked on comments to say this isn't a remaster. No worries, ill still watch it the rest of the way through.
Ok, so. Tool is, for me, about through lines and connections. In the real world, Tool has 5 albums and 1.5 or 2 EPs depending on how you count Salival, right? But in my listening, Tool has a dozen symphonies with new movements for each being released on different albums. Kind of like how Invincible from the last album sounds like a sequel or maybe a descendant of H. from Aenima. Well, this song is the button. Because every single song is represented in this track. I don't know what that means but let me offer you an example. Go to minute 7:25 of the Lateralus song Reflection and then listen to 4:25 of Opiate² again and i think you'll hear what i mean. And they aren't like random motifs and sequences out of context. The songs are about the same thing and so it feels very deliberate.
No worries; thanks for jumping right on this one. The guitar tone in that first half is exquisitely mean. Also, this one is less about his personal journey and if I recall correctly was a reference to that cult where the leader was forcing underage girls to “marry” him. I might be getting that confused, but it fits anyway. 😄
Lol that’s why we’re all here, to learn, love and grow.
Awwwright !!🤙
It's all good, they remastered Undertow (and maybe Opiate?) about a year ago, and released new album art for Opiate at the same time which I believe is the art in your video. So an easy mistake to make.
This is actually a completely new studio version. Not a remaster of the original.
Lots of trips on the OG Opiate, so this version really kicked me in the balls in a good way
Yeah this version isn't what I was hoping for. The raw anger is gone sadly
@@Mrfletcher490 I hear you and to each their own, but the man himself did say "if I can't heal from my art, how can you heal?" Part of why they've evolved so well.
@@Mrfletcher490 its hard to do the exact same angered vocals he did 30 years ago. Unfortunately it is what it is but its still a masterpiece nonetheless
@@xVIPgaming he also nailed the most important scream as an old man.
I would love to hear Tool reimagine and re-record not just the title track, but the entire Opiate album. Its such a treat to hear the original skeleton of the song rebuilt and regrown with 30 years of experience and journey layered on top.
Thats exactly what they did coming out this month on the 13th. They rerecorded and totally changed the whole EP. Yes!!!
@@Ogt92 This made my day!!! Thank you for the news!
@@lohankarachay476 No Problem! You can pre-order it right now check it out..
@@BittersweetDuality it's like Christmas!! More to come too from the rumor mill. A new official video and more
@@Ogt92 you sure it's not just this song? i don't think they redid all the songs i hope they did tho
This is totally different than the original! No record contract so they are doing whatever the hell they want now! I saw the original tour in 1992 in Seattle and bought the EP from Adam and still have it along with the ticket stub. Peace from WA!
They were so raw in Opiate and Undertow (Maynard’s power back then was deafening). Wish I could’ve saw them live in that time period!
I live in Seattle and have had the luck to see them at the gorge a couple times. I even got to meet Adam and Danny
"You can get lost if you're driving and probably pass 15 exits..." I kid you not, this exact thing happened to me in 2019, on my way home from seeing Tool in my hometown, and it was because I was reliving the instrumental section of this song (they've been performing a variant of this extended version live since at least 2015, iirc). Literally blew by my exit and didn't realize it until I was a good 5 miles past.
Sorry I was late again boss, I was picking my scabs again and spiraling out.
I did the same thing 2 days ago driving home from work listening to this song on repeat. Missed my exit by 4 miles but I felt too good to care lol
“I F**kin surrender!!” 😂😂 haha! Hopefully they do a show in Hawaii, so you can see them live! That was an awesome remastered track!
As a few comments have mentioned , this is a “New” re-imagined version. A Re-recording, (ie: a Brand New song🤘 ) with Justin on bass.
Huge difference between this and the original.
Haha now you “Have”
to do the original for comparison sake!
ALOHA BROTHER
Awwwright!!🤙
I’m Still Here!!
YES! It's now mandatory! 😃 I like this reasoning.
The dude must abide
This should be a law
Wow! This re-imagined version is great! I’m always concerned when I hear a classic has been redone, but this is fantastic!
I completely agree. He's got to do it now.
This song is a masterpiece. It brings the old and new Tool together into one song. I'm glad Justin got to be a part of this and give it his signature touch. My fist of many Tool concerts was back in 2001 in Sacramento, and I've been fortunate enough to see APC, and Puscifer as well, which are both amazing. But nothing ever compares to the first time you hear a Tool song.
@@OtisENGINEuity who knows 🤷. But yeah Arco was dope
I was there too!!!
I was at that show. Excellent!
@@piketfencecartel nice, I was in the mosh pit, right in front of Justin for most of the show. So epic
@@sharpshizz hell yeah, it's like a mini Tool concert reunion in here! 🤘
Maynard mimicking the tone/pitch/intensity of some psychotic preacher is what makes this song great, at least for me. Then he brings it down to a whisper, making it extra creepy. It's a powerful song. Angry Maynard delivering his message in a smart, very smart way.
Theatrical
The praise he gave Danny was one of the best things anyone ever said about any artist, period.
Quick edit, I'm still here :)
That scream at the end is beyond impressive considering Maynard is 57 years old. Holy cow.
They recorded this around 7 years ago
@@JTNugget yeah, it was mentioned on their instagram around that time
@@JTNuggetI mean, considering that they are touring this year, Maynard has still got it even at 58.
Also the screams and the drum pattern that follows is ala The Grudge
I've heard this version live so hearing this version brought me right back to my concert memory. love it.
yes but without the obnoxious fan yelling the whole fucking song.
Heard a very similar version live back in 01. Glad they finally recorded it! 😁
This is a re-recording of the version they're playing on tour now. Not sure about nomenclature but it's fresh tracking. Also this is Justin playing 💚
I'm still here!
Yep I saw this in 2016 in Nashville tn, and they did a tribute to David bowie death in the middle of it too.
They also added 5 minutes to it and there’s an accompanying music video.
Love Maynard's voice in this. I was honestly feeling down after his performance on Fear Inoculum. Felt like he'd lost his power.
It was being played live for years. It's been finished for ages. They said this but they had been waiting. No contract now. 😁🤘
--- I'm glad you're still here.
Think this is a re-imagining. More in line with their live version.
I got goosebumps the first time I heard this song. But I get them again watching your reaction to certain passages. Watching your videos always brings back that “first listen” feeling. Love it man and thank you.
The original Opiate was a big part of my musical journey when I was 16.. now 32 and still listening to the original and love the new recording
Crazy, was just gonna suggest this! Just saw Tool for the 1st time live last night too. The universe is in sync!
I truly appreciate you taking the time to do what you do. Thanks man.
Ah man, TooL are just incredible. I am so grateful to have been part of the journey since I first saw them live in 92, and I can't wait to catch them again at the o2 this year. Sending positive vibes to you all🤘
So blessed to have heard this live man. Actually, I'm blessed to have been able to hear them at all.
Saw them play this version live in San Antonio last month and, like the rest of the show, it was absolutely incredible!!
Keep up the good work, buddy!
Love this!! I'm going to see Tool live tomorrow night, can't wait, it will be my 2nd time. Never disappoints.
"Hush" on Tool's Opiate album is fantastic!! Bit of a different sound than their later stuffs!!
My favorite tool song
Saw them play it live on undertow tour seems like a lifetime ago now
My absolute favorite tool song... I can't say what I want to, even if I'm not serious!!!
Thank you for your reaction! The intro made me cry first time hearing it. I love it.
Uff! those visuals you started share @ 22:00 were on point .. I love your videos man ! Thank you !
love the passionate commentary, glad you were able to feel the music so well!
10:41 This part legit gave me goosebumps! The way Danny played and everyone sounded in there was just mind blowing! Maynard is still a GOAT for that amazing scream! Justin and Adam killed it as always! Always a Tool fan for life!
Still here... this is one your best reactions in a long time! Your music vocabulary is amazing and helps me put words to the feelings of enjoyment of any song. But this one was special. I was not aware that Opiate2 had come out yesterday, so I enjoyed MY FIRST LISTEN along with you! Fun! And wow do I wish I could hear more Tool messing around with their newer songs like this. I'm sure the 13 years process of writing songs for the Fear Inoculum album saw many great musical phrases and concepts hit the scrap heap. But even Tool's trash is golden.
I love watching these reaction vids from people who are actually knowledgeable about music and composition and all the nuances that go into creating masterpieces like this because I'm a music lover that doesn't know SHIT about reading music or chords or time signatures but I know musical genius when I hear it and it moves me more than any other art form. When that middle part started he gestured that it was giving him goosebumps on his arms. It's probably because I'm older now but when I hear music that beautiful and powerful it has me fighting back tears. It's awesome hearing someone as passionate about the music I love that is actually capable of breaking it down for me. It gives me even more appreciation for it
Can't have enough Tool reviews, dear Mr. Geebz...have a great day...greetings from Amsterdam!
For those of you wondering why it’s called squared…if you remember Tool teaching us about Saturns Return in the grudge and squaring the circle, it takes approximately 30 years for Saturn to make its full rotation around the sun. This is technically the Saturns Return on their first release, thus SQUARING the circle. In Hermeticism it is a term meant to reflect the challenges we face in those times…our first return signifying our slide into adulthood and the repercussions of either working with or against it, and the second one is the same but for the second half of your life aka your retirement. It’s interesting to think of it this way because the song adds all the elements you would expect from them post-Lateralus…feeling the “maturation” of the track. Just my 2 cents. I hope everyone is enjoying it as much as I have! Here’s looking forward to the video on the 18th!
Have you by chance been watching toolarchive RUclips videos?
YAY SATAN! That's the undercurrent and I'm becoming pretty aware that the occult forces that they think they're conjuring up for a good LSD educed jam might actually be the motherload of bad news. Less enlightenment, more convoluted self-aggrandizing manipulation. Like the band but liking the world view less and less so as things move along here. They ran this risk by calling everything a polarity.
@@wheelc3384 imagine spending the time and effort to write that. Find something to be happy about
@@colinburroughs9871 the occult is way easier to believe than a God that’s waiting for you to pray hard enough for him to come back and save you. Satan isn’t real
No one knows anything other than the life they are given. Stop pretending you have the answers.
My man....this is a re-recording. Thanks for doin what you do. Always fun
Instant subscribe! This guy absolutely gets it! The goosebumps, facial expressions, and reactions are right on. Then his technical engineering and production input is so cool. I dig it.
This channel started with Tool, you should go back through his vids
Another great one from Tool and i loved that decomposition! Hope the shoulder gets better and that you’ll be back in the water soon! Aloha🌸🌸
I really enjoy your breakdowns. I think have listened to each and every Tool analysis that you've (more than once admittedly) done so far. Tool has an incredible way of assaulting your pallet of senses.
I’m still here. This is exactly what RUclips was meant for. Great analysis structurally and dynamically. Subbed.
Tool absolutely uses pads. People that say they don't are delusional. 3 of the 5 times I've seen them Adam was using a synth pad onstage at times. Danny uses the Mandala synth pads pretty much on every song.
Danny also has a giant modular synthesizer he uses live for stuff like chocolate chip trip and breaks between songs. Several times I’ve seen Maynard play synth along with Adam. He doesn’t seem to do it anymore though.
Hell ya they use pads but that dosent take away from the unbelievable talent it takes to incorporate them the way these Beasts do, I think the stigma of pads ( ah he's cheating) is why people freak out so much. Danny doesn't know how to cheat lol.
There's actually people who think they don't?
I don't know of anyone who says Danny doesn't use the Mandala drum pads. Especially since you literally see him playing them at the very beginning of his part in the live Pneuma video.
What makes this less of a practiced skill than…. Guitar or “real” drums?
People are not worth it.
Love love love your reaction and how you describe/breakdown this track! This song kicks you in the face, patches you up and kisses your forehead just to push you down a flight of stairs 🤪 Another great one and I'm still here! ❤
I saw them play this live, and it literally still makes me cry when it breaks down... such amazing music, such an amazing experience. I will forever love Tool more than any other band
I'm still here! Thank you for this breakdown and reaction! Looking forward to more Tool tracks!
So awesome this is the first time I'm listening to the new version of the original album!
Getting this one in there quick, eh, Geebz!
JK, thanks for getting back around to Tool, I might actually have the chance to see them on this tour coming up.
Super stoked to hear the rest, keep on rocking, man!
*Finally got around to listening to the whole thing, and I am SO HYPED for a "Fear Inoculum part 2" style to these tracks!
Awesome breakdown as always of this re-imagined version. That first EP definitely blew me away and I really recommend you listening to the original EP version of this song to compare...and listening to entire EP as well. Those live recordings of "Cold and Ugly" and "Jerk off" are fantastic.
When i saw them on the Undertow tour (back in I think '94) at the Warehouse which was in back of Eagle Cafe across Honolulu Harbor, they closed the set with this song, amazing.
Opiate2 live was incredible. Visualisations were mindblowing . I never seen something like that .
I really love your perspective. Learn so much abouy music from you. Thanks
Sir that hat you have on is badass! Keep up the good work man!
Holly crap I was going to be very patient and wait for this vid to come out, but you were on it. This song came out just yesterday. Props to you.
I love seeing someone else feel that atmospheric beautiful build as much as I did. I really do think it's the best they've ever done it. It's just incredible.
And from my prospective as someone who's been listening to this song since since I was a kid for well over 20 years... hearing that piece get sandwiched right into the middle of a song I loved for most of my life made it one of the most emotional experiences I've ever had with music.
The first time I heard this version was live in 2017, and I actually cried at the moment it transitions back into the original version. It's an experience I'll never forget. And not hearing all the fun headphone magic that goes along with this studio version, it's almost like being back at that show under the stars again.
I'm still here! Glad to see this reaction, definitely gonna have to check out the original version now for those old, even more powerful vocals B)
Absolutely beautiful…and yes F’n surrender to the Tool journey baby!
Always fun to take this mystical journey with you.
It is a pretty amazing re-imagining of this song. Now you have to hear the original, also very awesome 👌
Geebz just tapped out...took more Tool songs than I thought it would. LOL. Love the channel brother.
First off, huge tool fan, so I really appreciate your analysis of. their work. Always looking forward to your next TOOL breakdown.
You are seriously one of the most awesome human beings on the planet geebz.
15:01 broke my heart...you have got to see them live!!! LUV you Gebz. and thank you for the mars volta!
Im still here! This is a masterful remaster imo great mash of old and new tool
Going to see them for the 3d time next Tuesday! Can't freakin wait;]
Really enjoyed this. Thank you for the education and entertainment. Great analysis and passion.
It’s absolutely a fantastic addition and performance. I wish they did redo all the songs from the album but still. This song feels right at home with other top notch songs and moments
That middle section has just enthralled me this past week. It invokes such a specific feeling in me, one semi lucid memory of my childhood. I was riding in my uncle’s car down the highway blasting music and frantically naming all the cars and trucks going by, just in awe of how much faster the world can be perceived at 70mph. The sun was out, scattered clouds, and this moment when the sunroof opened is right where Adam takes me with that guitar. Time slowed to a mere crawl, 70mph felt like 10, the sun shot through the clouds right through the sunroof, I felt the warmth and the breeze. Think that was my first real memory of “being in the moment” 🌀
Just saw them last night in Cleveland. Still absolutely dumbfounded how these guys can sound just as amazing live as on an album. Anyone who is a fan must go see them live every chance you can. Worth every penny.
This is from Revolver:
"Back in 2016 at the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, California, Tool debuted a re-imagined extended version of "Opiate," the title track of their debut EP, which has since become a familiar feature of their show, including on the group's current tour. The following year, guitarist Adam Jones revealed that they had recorded the proggier reworking in the studio and that visual effects artist Dominic Hailstone (Alien: Covenant, The Eel) had created a music video for it. Of course, this being Tool, five long years later, the results are only finally seeing the light of day. But also, this being Tool, the wait is well rewarded."
As usual, Revolver is not entirely correct. The debut of the extended version of Opiate was 2006. They changed very little from that version to this release. I saw it live at The Gorge, and remember it well.
Saw them perform this Live last Thursday in Detroit. Love these guys.
Alright Geebz...I'm listening to this for the first time with you. Let's GO!!
Brand new recording..sounds great
the new middle part sounds exactly like it would fit on Fear Inoculum anywhere and I hear Reflection in this version!! Pretty good!!!
When Adam kicks back in hardcore at the end of the long middle section gives me literal energy everytime. Such a beautiful feeling. @ 11:06 🌀🤙🏻🫶🏼
Saw them in concert here in Kansas City two weeks ago. I'm still in awe.
Pumped to see a new Tool reaction from you mang! As others have suggested you should check out the original to see how 30 years changes things. And while you’re there check out ‘Jerk-Off (live)’, one of my personal favs 🤙🤙🤙
Even after all these years, when the song really kicks in, it gives me goosebumps! For me, this will definitely be one of those songs, depending on the mood I'm in, dictates which version I prefer, if that makes any sense! Love both versions!
I got my wish granted!!!💚💚💙 love ya Geebz❤
I’d highly recommend listening to Sweat, 4 Degrees, and Eulogy
4 degrees and eulogy are 2 of my favorites.
I want Sweat played at my funeral, love that song.
he's hardly done any off Opiate or Undertow
edit; he hasn't touched their first 2 albums yet other than the live version of sober and this.
@@coolvad3r they are my two very favorites. My favorite song of all time by any band is Eulogy.
On never ending repeat
That was a nice nod to the song lateralus. And the sound effects that are also on pheuma is designed to open your third eye. It does help to have a decal to help you on your awakening.
I couldn’t agree with you more on the spacious fill in this song. Their reimagining is by far the most skin crawling and eye-opening of any fills that tool has done. So me and you are on the same wave length when it comes to that. And I just want to say that I left the island of Oahu about five years ago. I was stationed at Schofield barracks and I lived in Pearl city. Wish I knew you then Geebz!
I like how this channel differs from the rest in diving deeper into the musical instruments in contrast to the dozens of vocal reactions you see the most on RUclips.
Going to see them Friday. I'm pretty stoked, haven't been out of the cave much lately.
The F Bomb says it all brother. Thanks Geebz.
Two amazing breakdowns two days in a row? What a gift!
Get some beets and watermelons up in ya. Keep on rockin' and healin', Wolverine! ;)
This interpretation of the song Opiate is great and all…however the original version and the entire Opiate album is a totally different sound than any other Tool album….and probably one of my favorites.
The best thing about Opiate EP is that Tool was a solid band from the beginning. So god damn unique from the start.
Undertow was similar sounding but I get your point, the more simple song structures on opiate ep were unique and the sound was raw.
I'd like to see GEEBZ react to the live footage of some of the shows from the opiate/early undertow days.. those were some badass shows and Maynard ripped ass
... not that I saw them live myself back then but I've seen clips and videos.
Danny does it all live. All of it. I watched them last night and paid close attention. You need to get to a show on this tour.
Omg at 16:27 or whatever when the vocals come in I got goose bumps!!!
Nice. I saw them last week. Amazing concert!
Stilll here!
Pretty cool breakdown geebz.
Tools been reimagining songs live for a king time (most famous examples - pushit (saliva version, check it), prison sex (the closure version)) but think this might be the first re-recoding.
Paul d’amour is the bassist for ministry now. He also has done a few solo albums, notably lesser key, which is pretty groovy. Still a big reason for tools success, I think, was his powerful, driving bass lines, on those early tracks.
Keep up the good work
I was blown away when I heard this in Pittsburgh a couple days ago! Greatest concert I ever saw hands down!
Still here! :) Love that you didn't know that this was an entirely new version. you should do a video for the original Opiate and compare (from a production perspective)
Seeing TOOL in Cologne in May. Its been a while since I've seen them live.
I CANNOT WAIT!!!!!
I waited to listen to this track until Geebz did his reaction and fuckin hell am I glad I did. So many nuances that most listeners dont pick up on that Geebz can bring up. Outstanding Geebz.
You can tell it hits Geebs hard when the colorful language comes out. 🤣 A whole track of a people’s elbow compared to the original 🥵 Loved it and your decomp! I’m still here!
If you want ethereal TOOL you gotta check out Intension and Disposition. I recommend listening to Disposition, Reflection (again) and Triad back to back to get the full experience :)
Yes!!
I prefer to pretend Triad doesn't exist lol *EDIT* EXCEPT for one particular live version: ruclips.net/video/_mT-HhDgav4/видео.html that version is at least 10x better than the studio version haha
@@barrybarry8564 when you said live triad, this is the exact video I imagined. funny how that works out
12:15 the best reaction ever Geebz! LOL!
I don't often laugh out loud watching videos, but that one got me. 😀
Haha Tool will do that to you.
Danny can do anything live its amazing to witness live you need to go see them
This is very unique from the original. It's growing on me after a first listen.
Literally just saw them last night in Pittsburgh! They played this 2nd right after Fear innoculum and I didn't even know it existed till that moment! I was blown away! Tool has been my favorite band since Opiate came out and I was just starting high school. Ironically the local rock station probably back in 2005 I believe asked people to call in and suggest a tool song that you hadn't heard in a long time, I actually called in and suggested Opiate and they were like oh hell yes! He asked my name and where I was from and said that I would be on after the commercials. Of course I was just pulling up outside my house so I actually had to sit in my car for what ended up being over 20 mins! I seriously had never noticed how much time there was in commercials till that day! Anyway, you also mentioned about Justin not being the bass player at that time which is true but Paul actually left after Undertow not Opiate!
And Paul wrote a few songs of Aenema
Yes you are correct! I believe he wrote Stinkfist, H, Eulogy, and Pushit? I may be wrong and if so I apologize for any misinformation! Since the last time I commented here I am now going to drive to Cleveland and catch them there! I asked my girlfriend what she thought about driving there to catch them before the tour in US is over. I was actually really disappointed at first because she said that she wouldn't be able to call off work again so soon or to go in late. Then I was surprised to get a call from her soon as she was done working which I thought was really of cuz we usually just text until later. She was like I couldn't stop thinking about what you said and she said if for some reason we were never even beer to see them live again I would forget feel regret! Hell I told her I'm driving she can sleep in way home and he'll if for some reason you can't just don't go to sleep before work and soon as you get home from work that Monday just go right to sleep! YOLO!!!
I was at the Pgh show as well, best concert I've been to in years
@@loganirvine3700 going to see them in Cleveland too!
@@danielbrunner7730 Awesome man, if you haven't seen them live before you're in for a treat. They were hands down the best show ive ever been to. Completely smoked Metallica in Philly '17
I live 808 as well. I've been lucky enough to see them here 3 times. I just missed them apparently at a festival in 92. Tool, Primus and NIN were on the bill. How cool was that show.
I would love to see you react to anything off of Opiate or Undertow. I don't think you've truly explored earlier Tool with Paul yet. Thank you a million for all of your dedicated work! :)
Oh my Geeeez! This was so different than the original!!! I absolutely loved it. Still love the original as well. Damn you TOOL! LOL
I'm still here!
I am still here ! One other thing that caught my attention was the divebomb Adam does near the end, something he rarely does, just fun to hear it. If you have a chance to see them on this tour, you MUST go, they were amazing.
I miss their original sounds. It's good to hear them go back there
Great job, Geebz! Was looking forward to seeing you react to this. I would love to see you react to the original version of Opiate, as it's definitely more raw and concise compared to this new version.
On the original version you can really hear the difference in Paul's style of bass playing compared to Justin's. Paul D'Amour is actually a guitar player who switched to playing bass when he joined TooL, so his style is really a hybrid.
I'm still here, and I'm all for it! Aloha...,🤙
Saw them live, they play just like this is crazy how good danny is
