I am not an audiologist, nor an accomplished guitarist but this is my review of the Avantree HT5009 wireless headphones and whether they are any good, or even usable, for guitar practice. This is a beginner's viewpoint and the video is purely based on my experience of using them over a few days for around three hours of practice - scales, strumming and picking sequences.
This video should not be considered a professional review or a scientific test and anyone considering buying these headphones MUST do their own homework and make sure that they perform to their specific requirements and that any latency is not an issue.
That being understood, this video talks about latency which is a huge subject when talking about Bluetooth headphones, it looks at what is in the box, set-up and use. I then finish off by trying to demonstrate the low latency by picking some strings and recording the output through the headphones. This is recorded using my iPhone and a 6m lavaliere microphone perched between the headphones, so it is not overly ideal. The guitar is my Ibanez connected wired to my Spark amp.
That said, I hope that it helps those of you wishing to go wireless for your headphones.

Glad your gamble paid off. I have seen a lot of people talking about latacy issues but you explained it better than most, so thank you for that.
Glad it was helpful!
Nice review and thank you for doing all that research! I need a pair for recording music for which latency can be a problem but recording software has it own latency issues. I have to align tracks all the time. Thanks Sypher! Rock-on
You are welcome but please be sure to do your own homework before buying anything. My experience might not be the same as someone with your skills.
Nice review with the latency explanation. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
Thanks for the vid and your research on this.
You've been helpful with my own interest in getting a pair of wireless headphones specifically to play guitar ...
I bought a pair of wireless headphones previously for other reasons and have yet to try them out for guitar playing (because of the cable issues). If they aren't up to the job, then I'll certainly be re-watching your vid to take advantage of your research ...
I did note that some headphones come under the 'monitor' terminology and tend to be higher end ... so I am guessing that this might help with selection for both latency and comfort issues/weight. I was also impressed with the battery longevity for your headphones as 40 hrs (?) is definitely high-end compared to most on the market !
I noted that the headphones supplied are Bluetooth v4.0 whilst the Transmitter is v5.0, the latest version. 'Parkinsons Law' says that as soon as I buy a rig, the headphones standard will go up to v5.0 ... Such is life with technology, of course ... 😂
Keep up the good work ...
I was surprised to see the mix in Bluetooth versions when the box arrived and maybe the Pro set of headphones that I saw people talking about might be Bluetooth v5 and better matched. Alas, I went with this set because of the budget that I had set myself. I would have loved a paid of Waza Air headphones but those are just way to expensive for where I am at the moment, so I went for a cheaper option.
If you do decide to buy a new set for the guitar, please do you own homework and try before you buy because your experience could well be different to mine.
Glad it worked out for you mate! ive never really used headphones but still interesting to learn! also loving your guitar mate
Thanks Benny. Much appreciated.

Very informative and helpful. Great video. Much appreciated.
Glad it was helpful and thank you for taking the time to comment. It is very much appreciated.
I just want to confirm that this is totally doable using Avantree products. The real issue is making sure you have bluetooth headphones that can use the APTX low latency codec. I bought the Avantree Audikast Plus along with some noise cancelling headphones (August EP650) that support APTX LL, and everything worked great. Going from the Aux of the Audikast Plus, I connected it to my Focusrite Scarlet Solo USB interface in the phones port (using a 1/4 to 3.5mm adapter). Played a bunch of fast lead stuff, and there was no audible latency to my ears. Total cost was like 100 bucks.
I appreciate your logical style and (nearly) scientific methodology.
Thanks Will.
Super helpful -thank you.
Informative video thanks!👍☺
Hi and thank you for your visit. I am glad that it was helpful!
Great work and video Friend 🔥✌️🎸
Thanks Zio.
Nice one and many thanks.
Clean & Consistent 💯 Agreed
Great work and well done !! Looks like no latency. I am between this product or a gaming RF wireless headphones for pc gaming cause they are half the price.
Thank you for your visit and comment. I love these headphones and use them for both practice and watching the tv. I have also used them with my laptop for business meetings as well where I needed to move around.
Interesting video. So interesting I ordered the transmitter and the upgraded headphones from Amazon. Tried it out today on my Spark amp and the latency is definitely there and is an issue. Just tuning the guitar was frustrating. Disappointed, but maybe I am doing something wrong.
Hi Brian, I am sorry that you are experiencing the latency in your setup. I am only a beginner, so maybe I am not as tuned into things as you, but my headphones still work well for me with no noticeable latency.
Great review man! I wonder how's the overall latency if you replace guitar cable with guitar wireless system 🤔
That is a test that I am yet to try because I do not yet have a wireless guitar to amp setup. I am using the Fender Mustang Micro pretty much 100% of the time now for my personal practice, so the need for a wireless guitar to amp setup has slipped way down my wish list. The only main amp that I am now using will be the Blackstar Fly 3 when I have a music lesson. I thought that I might still use the Spark when I am home alone, but even then I am preferring the Fender Mustang.
Hmm - Still not convinced and I think that I'll stick to wired.
Thanks Carl. I can fully understand your reluctance and it took me months to take the gamble. I am sure that wireless headphones will not be for everyone and that is one of the reasons I kept on repeating that this was my experience only and that people need to do their own research and make their own decisions. They meet my needs though, for the moment at least.
I know how you feel. It is a lot of money to find that they are not to your liking but he has raised some good points in this video.
thanks i already had an avantree and those work really great was just wondering if the delay won't be too big for guitar as i wanted to put off buying pedals and stick with audio interface for now thanks!
I find them to be fine but I am only a beginner and some professional players maintain that the delay would be unacceptable. I can’t tell any delay.
@@SypherLXVII-MySixStringJourney there is a tiny delay if you look at it from solos perspective but on the other hand there are effects that can cause more delay easily so i would say it is good enough
Props for this awesome video. For a ‘beginner’ at the time you covered this better than any pro. I have been searching for years for low latency wireless headphones to be able to play guitar. Still have not found anything useful. I am searching my ass off for anything and i can’t believe they almost do not exist.
Interesting video! keep it up! stay connected! take care there!
Thank you, I will
Great video. I wonder if anyone has tried a non-Bluetooth solution, such as SteelSeries Arctis 7? they claim to have very low latency.
Hi Roy, thank you for stopping by my channel and for commenting. I did not come across the SteelSeries Arctis 7 solution and I don't have any experience of using that system. Hopefully someone in the know will respond.
i find aptx ll quality is a bit too bad. the transmiter and receiver chipset seems to also make more difference than the codec per se. AAC with low latency encoding (which isnt specified anywhere) is quite decent for example, though i havent found a good combo for that. also, for me, wireless is only worth it if the headphones are convenient and that basically means something like airpods, which dont have great latency either hehe
Thanks for your visit and comment. I'd love to be able to use some light weight airpods, alas the latency is too much. These Avantree headphones were the best solution that I could find and afford at the time.
hey, I was wondering if my bose headphones will work with spark with an adapter?
Are you talking about Bose wireless headphones? If so, which codec do they run on and support?
Interesting, I thought that Bluetooth was Bluetooth, so latency was always going to be a problem. You might have persuaded me to think again with these headphones. A little on the pricy side, but you get what you pay for.
Thanks Jackie, I am glad that you found the video useful. I would remind you to do your own homework as to whether you find the headphones to your liking though before you commit to spending the money. I am conscious that I am only a beginner and not experienced in audiology and Bluetooth devices. I have got on well with mine, but not everyone is going to agree.
@@SypherLXVII-MySixStringJourney Understood and sound advice as always.
Your are welcome. I try my best 😉.
Good video, I too looked at these but as the transmitter still needs a cable for power its not really wireless so i bit the bullet and bought a pair of Waza Air headphones and they are great, no cables, no amp required, truly wireless although near £400 not cheap but as i would have most likely spent near that on other bits and pieces over time with nowhere near the same result its cost affective really.
Hi David, I did look at the Waza Ai headphones but they were far too expensive for me at this stage in my journey. They seems to come highly rated though. I am using mine for practicing, listening to music and (being half deaf) the tv, so multiple uses right now.
Thanks for this. Now all you need is a large battery pack for your Spark and your completely wireless (it can be done) 😉
Very true!
The headphones picked up interference from one of your pickups!!
Thanks, I had not noticed that.
