Her nonchalant attitude, slouchy demeanour and razor-sharp wit were all I aspired to be as a teenager. I even tried her deadpan gravelly voice, made being a teen fun.

A lot of people give most credit to Roseanne, Jackie, and Dan for the success of the show but Darlene was right up there with them. She's one of the funniest sitcom characters ever.
Also, Sara Gilbert was the only one of the kids to be Emmy-nominated. She received two nods for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and lost both times to Laurie Metcalf. (IMO, Lecy Goranson should have received at least one nomination, too.)

I actually love that episode with the poem: It was a great poem, and reduced Roseanne to tears. Sort of like when Darlene gave Roseanne a copy of the short-story she had written, it gave Rosie a glimpse into her daughter’s life/mind.

Best scene ever! my favorite line from her is when she’s out and this guy is hitting on her and she says “any part of you that touches me you’re not getting back.” Love this character!! Because everyone is completely miserable without the one person that made the show they were casted in. Just no one will admit it.

They could just chalk it up to aging. How when she was younger she was determined not to get sucked into the role of a mundane adult life, she was the one in her mind, that couldn't be sucked in ...but life often sucks you in, and as you age sometimes it's a permanent loss adventure and zest for life. The kids were always determined not to end up like their parents, and everyone in their town, only to end up like them. Age, ages you. .. Still a semi realistic portrayal of life, which the Connors even though it sucks a million times over, still gets that respect from me. This is what happens alot in life to a lot of lives..
@Leslie Mccann Also I feel alot of fans longtime and new can notice how the passion and enthusiasm that they had for acting when everyone was younger and the course of the original show is completely non existent. The spark is gone from their eyes and hearts. It's been too long. They're all tired because of life and other endeavours. The delivery of lines are flat, lifeless, emotionless, and mechanical. It's like they've been forced or pressured into something that they don't really want to do. I know that they appreciate the money, but I feel like they mainly did it out of maybe pressure that longtime fans put them under. Longtime fans don't want to be reminded of the fact that the character and actor are older and maybe the effects of aging and life has taken a toll on them. The new time viewers want to see finally what the hype was about, because they've probably heard others speak highly and fondly of the Roseanne show. Longtime viewers They expect the same stic and charm factor and gimmicks as the character long ago. They don't want to be able to differentiate and distinguish the actors and characters. They want the associate the character with the actor as one. With the Connors, I see each of the actors on television. It's like the og actors are all new actors hired to replace original actors who are no longer on a show and trying to imitate the roles but failing miserably at it. I don't see Darlene anymore, I see Sara Gilbert on trying to play a character named Darlene. The beloved characters we use to know are dead. Within the exception of Jackie.
When I watched this in the 90's I used to think that Darlene was so mature because she is a few years older than me. Now I look at exactly the same girl and all l see is a little kid. Omg where did the last 25 years go?
Growing up in the Scottish highlands in a tiny village where there’s no much to do back in the 80s and 90s meant that watching funny shows like this were a brilliant way to pass the time when the weather was too bad to go out. I loved Darlene…..her banter was superb! I loved the whole cast and the show was brilliant, but Darlene was definitely my favourite….maybe because I was tomboy. My folks were very strict though and I’d have been leathered had I backchatted. So, to me, Darlene was a god!

Yeah, As a teen she would put the fear of God in people. I loved it when she said to DJ "Your about to became a strange smell in the attic." Now on the Conners she's gotten soft wimpy another words. I know that she an adult now but i miss the teen that would tell anyone off.
One of Darlene's best lines was when she said they keep DJ around for spare parts. Obviously it was her delivery that made it hilarious:)
