  • There seemed to be oil leaking out of the valve cover area. So, after cleaning, I ordered a new Fel-pro gasket from Amazon. This was a simple replacement as the bolts were easily accessible. The old gasket was dry and brittle and at 200K miles a good idea. This should be the same 2007-11 models.

    9:33 I had a lot of trouble keeping the gasket in place. My trick in the end was to tie it up with fishing line in multiple spots. Then once I've got it in place but before tightening it all down, snip and remove the lines.

    Excellent video don’t care of the camera angle was bad. It made me realize that I better have my shit together before I attempt to do anything.

    I like that you showed the challenges you ran into. I have 1 suggestion. I'm an HVAC technician and believe it or not one of my most used tools is a (carpenter/painters) 5 in 1 tool. It would've definitely helped you in lifting the cover off. Check one out, guarantee you'll use it everyday for something. Great video

      True, I have one of those, but not near me at the time.

    Any clue how much oil you were losing before you replaced the gasket per week/day? Thanks

      Sorry don't know for sure, just saw the leaks and the gasket was really dry and brittle.

    Silicone or Rubber? Brand?

    The whole channel that the gasket fits into is really warped and swollen to the point the new gasket leaks worse than my old one. I never knew aluminum could expand like that. I'm at a loss what to do now. Junk yard won't sell the cover without buying the entire used engine. 😒 maybe I need to squeeze a whole tube of silicone in with the new gasket. 😏

      I have not seen an aluminun valve covers warp that much, but I can only assume it must have gotten hotter than it should. You can try to add some sealant in hopes to seal. You may need to bite the bullet and buy a new cover. Good luck.

    I am having a hard time getting the head off after taking off the screws. I am afraid I might damage the head from the sides if I use a screwdriver. How did you manage to get it off?

      There should be two pry points, one at the front of the engine and one towards the rear.

    Do you have to use rtv sealant if the new gasket fits perfectly? I have a 07 Camry 2.4 with 300k+.

    • @mrfixit4211
      @mrfixit4211  2 года назад

      There are some joint that will need the RTV near where the front cover meets the block. This would insure that there would be no leaks.

      Sorry it's been a while since I worked on this, but I believe it was like 15-17 ft.lbs

      It could be different for a 2009, but I tried torqueing to 17 lb/ft on my 2006 Camry and broke a bolt. Thinking I made a mistake, once I replaced the bolt and buttoned it back up, I broke another bolt (this time it was one of the bolts with a nut on top, so I really don't know how to replace that...)
      Long story short... just do the cross pattern when getting them finger-tight, then again when getting them tool tight, but do not torque it... just go barely past where you feel it getting tight on the wrench. That's how I did this job on my last car before I even owned a torque wrench, and it lasted years without a leak after that.

      @@brianheath5091 That should not have been enough to snap a bolt is it is the correct torque setting. You may need to hand tighten again after a while as they seem to loosen after use.

      The 2 center bolts in the valve cover = 10 ft lbs.
      The bolts and nuts around the valve cover = 8 ft lbs.

      Its a good idea to use 3m weather strip glue to hold the gasket on place before reinstall the cover.

    My car has a burning oil smell. And I noticed oil leak from the engine cover. Would this be the proper fix?

    • @mrfixit4211
      @mrfixit4211  2 года назад +4

      If your leaking from the cover it would create the smell and it should be replaced. But the engine in these year models did have oil ring issues allowing oil to pass the rings and burn.
