- The idea behind the Knucklebuster project was to illustrate how you can take a later-model vehicle from the 70’s or 80’s and turn it into a cool vehicle you can drive every day without spending a fortune. Since these vehicles aren’t that old, they are relatively easy to find and not terribly expensive. They also don’t usually require extensive rust replacement and expensive frame-off restorations that take months or years and a lot of money to do. Another plus is the fact they already have huge aftermarket support, so replacement parts are easy to find and usually very affordable, making them a perfect first project to tackle.

Ah the good old days when 70s and 80s vehicles were affordable. That truck would easily be $15k+ today before building it up.
So right, in that condition and paint, yes, but a daily driver with old paint, those are still under $3-4k here in Montana. Some even less.
If it’s just surface rust all the better. But that truck here in Texas is at least 5 k if it’s got a good title. A thousand less for no title. Junk with a good title is a grand all by its self. Pretty rough if your a young guy with no money. I never owned a car that I paid 1k till I was almost 40 - why waste the money on something I could fix. I bought my first new one when I could pay cash for it. Should have stuck with an older Honda.

@@z71tina where? The motor and trans in this thing was 5k, 2500 in suspension upgrades, 2500 in the interior, 2000$ worth of wheels and tires, not counting the 450$ painless wiring kit, 900$ bed wood kit, there is 15k in parts, if it is for sale, probably should jump at the opportunity
@@The.Real.Reaper parts trucks and incomplete ones missing the engine and trans are being posted for that amount here. Don't know if they are selling or not. Parts are going for big $$ as well
I just discovered that Stacy is on youtube. He hasnt changed a bit from TV back in the day. This guy is such a pleasure to watch. The Bob Ross of wrenching. Love his attention to detail and everything he does he does right. Also all the products he recommends are actually great.

I had that EXACT feeling. I didn't know he was on youtube. I have to subscribe he made so many sunday mornings interesting back when I actually used a TV. Wow the ad during the brakes was the add I saw so many years ago and bought my pheonix bleeder which I still use to this day... This show is a time capsule for me. I had time back then and lots of tools and my brother in law and I would fix anything we could for our family... 3 kids (between us) later and we haven't wrenched together in years but we do sit around the pool with the cousins playing and we TALK about wrenching lol
@@shannonfamily Yeah it gets tough to find the time to wrench on stuff anymore. It been even tougher without a garage to work in, so I get my fix these days from watching shows like this on RUclips. I don't even have a TV anymore, lol. Just use my laptop and put on Cleetus, SkidFactory, DD Speed Shop, Zip Ties n Bias Plies, Vice Grip Garage, Deboss Garage etc etc. It's a nice way to still learn about different cars without getting dirty hahaha.

This has been edited, beyond just a whole build combination. It has also been further edited to cut out all the extra commercial TV cuts with show graphics, pointless post-commercial recaps, just as I suggested they due previously. (RUclips is a different type of viewer than old commercial tv days.) They also combined several episodes into this one for the whole build, but also way better content. Wow! I just wanted to say thank you for the Channel Editor for listening to us fans and say what a huge content quality improvement that change made to this video. I hope you can edit all the other builds like this one? I didnt have to fast forward once. Again great edit and thanks from all of us viewers. Awesome video.
This was originally 3 episodes. The editor did a great job cleaning this up from the originals I'm hoping he does this to a few of his older builds on Trucks (if he has the rights to them).

Stacy always said “you could do this” or “this isn’t as bad as you would think” and from watching him since I was so young that’s instilled in my brain and I’ve built some really cool shit cause I have the confidence because of encouraging words like that , thanks Stacy keep doin what your doin man everyone digs the shit out of it and I appreciate all the tips and tricks
He's a "Can Do" type of guy who shows you what's possible.
He shows you what is possible if you have the money he has at his disposal. He doesn't pay for crap because he and his show is fully sponsored. Even the "customer" or "owner" project vehicles are done at little to no cost to them just so they have a TV show.
True, but you're point doesn't apply here since he simply remarked on how Stacy shows the techniques. The budget costs are outside the purpose of the demonstration.
@@ls4.8frank thats one part. but its also the availability of the parts. it looks like on a lot of american cars you have parts used over decades. and a lot of cars share the same joints, chassis, additional parts for engines etc. try that on a newer not american car. complete wiring harnesses for an old japanese car? that did not sell very well in europe??? no way.
producing special brackets and parts is possible but then you still have the hurdle of getting everything approved for using the car on public roads. just for using different seats you will loose 2000 dollars just for the paper and registration(sport seat and rails for example. easily overshade the price for seats and bracketrails.) it may work for america but not for everywhere else in the world.
every two years i need to change lights, springs, shocks, exhaust, carbon parts, steering wheel and the wheels just to pass the inspection...

I grew up watching this show with my dad and it brings back so many memories watching it
After I bought my 2003 GMC 13 months later I had a 3”x5” drop. At that time I added a sway bar to the rear end and replaced the stock front bar with a Hotchkiss sway bar. After this I tried a 35 mph corner at 60 and boy did the sway bars make a difference. Months later I did slotted and grooved docs front and rear. What a stopping difference. I also used performance pads. I estimated about a 30% better stopping power. I didn’t do the other stuff you did because the truck barely had 1000 miles on it. The next year the shows that I entered I got 70% win. I’m not chasing trophies but the recognition for my money and effort was worthwhile.
I also used a stock spring rate spring with a 1” shorter spring. Thus I ended up with a 4”x5” drop. This was only a start for my $60,000 investment.
One thing to remember is that you will not recover your total investment when sell your pride and joy. How do I know my $60,000 investment sold for $15,000. I had fun and all of this took place over a 10 year period.

Man I'm disappointed we didn't get to hear it run and see how good it handled now and of course no Smokey burnouts. Lol Great looking truck though as all of you projects are, I've followed you around since trucks debuted on TNN back in the day. Good to see copperhead back in the shop. Hopefully the Willys and wild horse are still around somewhere. That bronco was always my favorite!
This just another example of Stacy's great work and why I love watching gearz. I really like the full build format. I've been thinking of doing an old square body truck and now I'm more excited about the idea. Of course, I'm going to save this video for future reference.

Stacy was my hero as a kid. I'd wake up every Saturday just to watch him on trucks pn the power block, and again on Sunday to catch the replay. Loved when he start doing his own thing with gears on the speed channel. This channel brings back so many found memories jus wish he'd do some new content on here , so curious to see what he's up to these days

1,200 in just the lowering kit ….. and most don’t have a lift to make it easy because after coming off that much money now you gotta install it the hard way like most of us

I'm just so overwhelmed with the final picture that my vocabulary doesn't contain words for what I feel. Totally amazed with EVERYTHING. I'm not sure what kinda pesos's you'd have in the final procedure but regardless, you have increased the value of this ride that it would create a real fight in a bidding war if it were to come to an auction setting. You make it all seem so easy and I'm sure it would be doable for the shade tree fix it man. Much Respect and looking forward to to your next project. I got a 79 with an LS swap (engine & trans) that someone gave up on. Needs to be wired and while I’m at it, I’m doing a suspension overhaul. $3600 bucks. Clean title. No accidents. Couldn’t be happier with it and what it’ll become!

I miss watching this on the Speed Channel. Last year I did a little trading and acquired a 1977 F150 Ranger XLT 4 speed 4x4 all Factory conditioned. Little surface rust here and there some patina. Arizona desert truck. Geared really low. 351 M400 engine I'm told it's basically a stroker Cleveland engine. It's definitely a tractor engine. It had been sitting for 8 years after changing all the fluids and flushing out the tanks it fired right up. I'm loving driving this thing around but still looking for a deuce and a half.
You are starting with a VERY clean truck. That costs more up front but, worth it.
I really appreciate the intro saying you should have a plan. I've been hodge-podging here and there on my c10 and luckily haven't gotten very far on it so I can still get my plan together and the parts that will go together. Thanks Stacey!

Beautiful truck!!!! My first vehicle when I was 16 was a 73 Chevy c10! Straight 6 with a 3 on the tree!! Back in the 80s that bench seat got a work out with the girls😂

I still have my bike with a Banana seat. But mine has Ram Horn Handlebars! Those Bike's worked good for delivering the Sacramento Bee! I dug it out and started fixing it up again the other day.
Great Job, always enjoy your stuff. I started fooling with cars in the late 60's and worked at a few GM dealerships in a couple states, all the time deep into the car/ hot rod seen I'm 67 now still have a few toys setting around and still love the smell of tire smoke and race fuel. All this being said you make my day with every video and build, keep up the good work, all of them bumps, bruises, cuts & scrapes are reminders of fond memories. I think this truck looks good like it is now! I would prefer the old Cragar Wheels and BFG tires, and the spoked steering wheel that was on it before you started the refresh resto! I am just old school!

He kept saying its afordable, but i would guess with todays prices motor, trans, paint, and all other pieces that adds another $40,000 to an already $20,000 spent on that quality of a used truck. Also worth mentioning at least a year of wrenching.

I bought an 86 k10 few years back for $5000. Ran and drive straight body little rust and had ac. It’s probably worth more now. All the ones that are cheap don’t run or are rusted out!

I’m actually building a 79’ shortbed so this video really helped me out on some stuff and the funny thing is it’s got 22” chrome rims lowered and I painted it flat black 3 weeks ago

I love must things that Stacey had done (Copperhead anyone?), but it's always driven me crazy how many times he uses the word 'affordable' but never actually says how much it was at the time of filming.
Oh yes would have been nice to use all those nice parts when i did mine .But here in Canada those parts would cost so much although i did get some parts from the U.S. shipping was a killer .Great video thank you very nice truck well done

Had me a 1975 C10 short bed stepside in black with a 350 auto with cragars and I had gold tint on the windows......It absolutely looked sharp.

Yeah, but those trucks will sell for $50k, built the way it is.
They aren't after a profit in the build, since they make money on the show.
I wouldn't spring for aftermarket parts, but I would replace the stock parts for steering, suspension, and brakes.
I would also slap a LS/4L80E in there with a 1 ton rear and posi unit on 3.73s or 4.10s.
Basic lowering springs and an axle flip are a decent option, good shocks, and new stock parts on the steering and brakes, I'd be happy. That being said, even if I did all new parts on that and a decent little 500hp drivetrain, it would be a $20-25k truck. I could do a decent job with a $3000 truck and a $10k budget, but it wouldn't be this, that's for sure 😂😂
