  • 1973 Camaro Z28 Subframe DISASSEMBLY and L82 Engine UPDATE!!
These passed few weeks I was able to further disassemble the Camaro's L82 Engine and drop it off at the local machine shop. I then started to sandblast various small parts as well as take apart the front suspension in order to prep the subframe and engine bay for paint.

Hey Ryan, I have been enjoying the build. I have done a 73, a 70, ad a 71. That panel separation in the front that you were pointing to does not separate when you disassemble the front end. I have done it many times. The top part you pointed to does but that line between the grille and the headlight does not. The front comes apart into several pieces, the two fenders, and the upper and lower valance panels. The separation between the valance panels is behind the bumper. Of course you would have to remove the grille first. Another thing you can do is unbolt the four bolts from the fenders to the body under the doors and the radiator core support bolts to the frame, and the whole front comes off. This is how they assembled them. The front end was assembled on a jig and then attached to the car with those 6 bolts. Just be careful as you can twist it if you decide to take it off as one large unit.

Like seeing those 4 bolt mains! Nice engine. Smart move on the body disassembly. You can actually remove the entire front clip as one piece, but you need help to do so, and a place to put it once it is off. Looking forward to the next episode. 👍

I did the same thing on a 73 Camaro back in the 90's. Only this one is in better shape. You should be able to remove the front clip as a single unit, but you'll need help. Then you can disconnect the subframe and roll it right out to work on it.

Back in the day 60's / 70's / 80's we would just unbolt the rear / back of the finders from the firewall and under the front of the finders near the front bumper ( body mounts ) and then lift the whole front clip off the frame in one piece , Then set it out in the yard for the dog to sleep under it , Call it the dag box , Lol Also if i may suggest , Only because of weight issues , if the engine is going to be out of the car when putting the front suspension back together and after bolting the upper and lower control arms back on the frame and have the coil spring in place you might wanna get a long good Hardin steel threaded rod with some heavy-duty jam nuts and washers and but it through the upper and lower control arms where the shock holes are and tighten down to connect the spindle arm a little easer , Some people still use that method today .

You honestly don't even need to take the nose off. You can always get away with just dropping the stub frame out. Just did one on a 77 firebird. Just leave the core support in

Hey Ryan, Love the car, great channel and content. I'm glad you are bringing the engine back to a stock appearance. It's too bad you cant pull the nose off and blast and powder coat the sub frame. I have a 67 SS/RS Conv. that I restored years back that I knocked all the way down. Your car is very original and I much respect your measured approach to the engine bay/front end restoration. I'm sure you are , but just a reminder to take tons of pictures and label EVERY nut, bolt, and part you disassemble. Keep up the great work and content. Hope you are feeling better.

I wish I could go a little further with the car but I told myself this would be a very nice driver rather than a full on resto with interior/paint work. Gotta keep on plugging away at what I can, the best way I can 👍🙂

I have a house on a street in Mobile, Alabama that was built in 1912. All the houses are lovingly restored but only a few of us have driveways, and nobody has a garage. I really want to sell it and buy a house with a garage so I could do what you are doing. When my house was built, horses were the main source of transport. I hate not having a garage.

Seriously though, those pistons didn't look bad at all. If you change to a flat top piston you're going to lose horsepower because of those open chamber smog heads. You won't like the results and yes you'll have to run premium fuel but it's not like it's your daily driver.
You could take the "front clip" off of the car without breaking it down into individual pieces and then the subframe will come out after taking only four bolts out of the floor subframe.

    • @RyanSampsonRPh
