This is 70’s - when I was a teenager…I have always loved it - and been a fan of his. He is from Texas just like me so we really tried to show up for him as fans!
I saw them in 2019. They sounded fantastic. One of the best live performances I have seen of any band. After all these years, he is one of the few who still has it.

Every once in a while a song like this pops up that my parents used to play on long car rides and it makes me smile as I'm reminded of a time and place I had otherwise forgotten.

The band was originally called The Steve Miller Blues Band, and (obviously) they played a lot of blues. But their record company wanted them to drop "blues" from their name to make them more appealing to a wider audience (although they still played a lot of blues early on). Steve was the leader, but had a number of great players in his band, most notably Boz Scaggs (who went on to a successful solo career). He actually wasn't happy when the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inducted him as a solo artist, because he knew that the various band members had been a part of his success.
It’s amazing how many “hippy bands” used that blues sound & traditional blues songs.

I looooove The Steve Miller Band. Their 1974-1978 Greatest Hits album is a must listen. So many bangers in that short 4 year span.
Steve Miller Band is one of the greatest, but underrated bands. Many of their songs have been used in soundtracks and pop culture and some people do not know it is them. Steve himself is a great guitarist since he was taught by his godfather, Les Paul, one of the greatest guitarists and pioneers in music. I've totally wore out at least two tapes of them from listening while driving. Love to see you getting into them, Diane.

I love Steve Miller. The peaches line is a take on an old Irving Berlin song, If You Don't Want My Peaches, Stop Shakin' My Tree. Berlin may be best known for writing White Christmas.
I think it's an old phrase used in a lot of blues numbers. I know it also turns up in Matchbox by Carl Perkins. If it's a good phrase and there's no specific copyright on it, songwriters will gladly help themselves to it.

I grew up with the Tom Petty cover and always misheard this lyric as "beaches" not "peaches". Now it makes more sense!

I have a Chuck Berry album from the late 60s where he was backed up by the Steve Miller Blues Band. By the time I was in graduate school (1975-77), the Steve Miller Band was often playing on my car radio as I drove back to Boston from my hometown in New York. I'm surprised I didn't memorize the words I heard them so often.

A fun time in my life was when working on his Southern Oregon Ranch, just north of Williams Oregon, the last two years he owned it; sold in '86. It was near 800 acres and just me and an older gent worked it.
I had the good fortune of seeing Steve Miller live several times from his early days to his later performing years and I have to say he just got better with age. The last concert I saw him was at Wolf Trap in Virginia in the early 2000's and the band, the performance everything was just killer.
His song “Take the Money and Run” is worth a listen, IMHO.
One of the things I love about Steve Miller Band is that they would just make up a word for the lyrics if they needed one.
The orchestral band you may be thinking of is Glenn Miller from the 1930s and 1940s. That was more of the big band sound, though.

"Golden Oldie" to me is 1954-1964. "Classic Rock" to me is 1965-1980. BUT That's just me (Born 1962)
My Master's advisor played with Steve Miller when they were both in college in Wisconsin, I thought it was BS. But he proved me wrong by getting us backstage passes for a show in Albequerque and getting a big hug from Steve after the show. He was in his 60's by then so no wild partying going on, but good food and drinks.
Ahhh another great from growing up in the 70's. Several good songs from Steve. Hanging out in the park on Fridays having a couple of beers with friends singing along with this one.

This brings me back to my college days. Being a music major, there were always Friday night band parties, which were so huge that the cops would always eventually come in to break them up. During the parties, Steve Miller was a,ways playing on the stereo inside the house. Someone was obviously a huge fan. 😂 Good memories!

My favorites of The Steve Miller Band were Fly Like An Eagle, and Take The Money And Run. After the Lynyrd Skynyrd crash, The Steve Miller Band, The Eagles, and the Doobie Brothers was really all I had left to listened to after that.
I didn't recognize it until he started the 'I'm a" bit. My dad would always have oldies radio on in his shop, but I would never actually pay it any attention.

Swingtown has an awesome drum riff. Jungle Love has great lyrics. Fly Like An Eagle is epic synth and keyboards.
Wish we could get a time machine and go back to 1973, I was cruising in a 68 SS 396 Camaro listening to this tune with my first girlfriend sitting in the passengers seat. Those were the days. She looked just like Diane.

Another good song by this band is "Abracadabra", released in 1982. It did well on the charts in a good number of countries. It's a bit more uptempo from this song, but it still sounds pretty good. The video is a little odd though.
Everyone knows this song...(it's like Steve's "Brown Eyed Girl")...but most people think it's called "Space Cowboy". Steve already had an earlier song "Space Cowboy"..... which is why he's able to quote it in this song.
This album dropped when I was in Jr. High. This song was played so much on the radio, we would turn the channel when it came on. Hardly anyone bought this album in '73 when you had other options like Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, McCartney & Wings, etc.
Love Steve Miller, and so did my Dad. He's been gone 10 years now, but one of his all time favorite songs, ever since it came out in 1976, was _Rock'n Me_ by Steve Miller. He used to play that song over and over.

_Fly Like an Eagle_ is a kind of spacey prog type number you might enjoy. _Abracadabra_ was a popular pop rock song of his from the early '80s. He did a lot of great stuff.

Early Steve Miller music was his best in my opinion. His album titled "Number 5" released in 1970 is a favorite.

It was a very good show
Saw them around the same time at Spartan stadium in San Jose with Eric Johnson, Extreme and ZZ Top. It was for ZZ Top's Recycler tour, so they were heading with the big stage production they had at the time. imo Steve Miller band stole the show. ✌️&🎶

I have seen Steve Miller in concert 2 times in early 2000's. They were still fabulous & rocked us until the venue pulled the plug (it is in a residential area and has a limit of 12"30 a.m. for any concerts).

Orchestral? Maybe you were thinking of The Glenn Miller Orchestra. He was a jazz/swing trombone player, composer, bandleader..very successful in the late 1930s, early '40s. His most famous pieces is called "In The Mood".

FYI..... A little nugget of info. The creator of the Les Paul guitar (Les Paul) is Steve Miller's Godfather.
Two things.
First, yep, the Steve Miller Band is currently touring North America with Def Leppard and Journey. (You've already reacted to the latter, maybe it's time to check out the former?) They just hit Minneapolis at the beginning of last week.
Second, as far as "classic rock" goes, here are a handful of other bands to add to the ever-growing laundry list of bands...Foreigner, Kansas, Boston, the Cars, Rush, Loverboy, ZZ Top.
I first heard this song way way back in 1992 when I was 16 and working my first job at an amusement park. There was a ride called the Himalaya and the owner only allowed classic rock to be played. Steve Miller is a legend! I think the reason you thought of them as a big band because there’s a big band called the Glenn Miller Band. Oh yeah and this song was sampled by the rap group Geto Boyz for their song Gangsta of Love. I wouldn’t suggest you listen to that one if easily offended as it’s down right vulgar. It’s old school rap though.
That album was pretty much the sound track to my high school years. Just very mellow and summertime carefree. Thanks for putting a 🙂smile on my face.

Happy Weird Wednesday Diane! This song and "Fly like an Eagle" are Steve Miller's biggest songs. "Swing Town" is a good one too. And one of his former bandmates, Boz Scaggs, went on to have a huge Yact Rock solo career with songs like "Lido Shuffle" and the Dirty Lowdown! Great artist, highly recommended. Boop!

I had to look it up, but it was Vernon Green that coined the word pompatus or actually 'puppetutes' which according to Green meant "A secret paper-doll fantasy figure who would be my everything and bear my children".

The sound in Steve Millers song the Joker is the first thing everyone recognizes about the song. At 2:22 Steve Miller guitar sounds like its whistling enjoy seeing Your Reaction. At 3:21 that sound from the guitar rocks. At 3:58 enjoying the sounds to the music and Your dancing sways to the music. Steve Miller Band 'sounds like an orchestral band' because of the much earlier band named "The Glen Miller and his Orchestra" or "The Glenn Miller Band". They mainly played Big Band and Swing songs between 1938 and 1942.
"Pompatus" means "to act with pomp and splendor." The word is probably a corruption of-or imagined variation on-the word "puppetutes", which was itself a coinage, originated by Vernon Green at the age of 14. Green included the word "puppetutes" in the lyrics of doo-wop song "The Letter" (1954), as performed by him and The Medallions. "The Letter" also included another original coinage, "pismotality". Presumably in homage to the Medallions' song,
The lyrics of "The Joker" include the quatrain:

Each line references a track on a previous Miller album: "Space Cowboy" on Brave New World (1969); "Gangster of Love" on Sailor (1968); and "Enter Maurice" on Recall the Beginning...A Journey from Eden (1972), which includes the lines:[1]

Although Miller claims he invented the words "epismetology" (a metathesis of the word epistemology) and "pompatus", both are variants of words which Miller most likely heard in a song by Vernon Green called "The Letter," which was recorded by the Los Angeles doo-wop group The Medallions in 1954.
Green's "The Letter" as performed by the Medallions had the lines:[1]

Green describes the lyrics as a description of his dream woman.[1] "Pizmotality described words of such secrecy that they could only be spoken to the one you loved", Green explained. He had been part of the same San Francisco scene that gave us Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead and Santana. Unlike the rest of his friends he hadn't broken through to the mainstream yet. So he decided to sit down and listen to the Top 40 and see what was popular. "The Joker" was the result of that experiment. Steve decided to write the biggest and dumbest song, and it worked giving him his first hit and #1 in the process.
