  • Which camera should you buy?
    This the question that I get asked most and I'm here to help you figure out which camera is best for you! Or at least which category of camera you should be in. I shoot Sony for all of my professional work, so all the camera's I'm going to recommend are Sony.

    I mentioned to my girlfriend that I'd love to start automotive photography. I've never really practiced or used more than a point and shoot. She surprised me for my birthday and got me a sony A6500 and 4 lenses.
    I still barely know what I'm doing, only now I live in constant fear of dropping it.
    It's absolutely amazing though. Best gift I've recieved ever

    This was great. I ended up with an A6300, and I love it. I use it for backpacking and rock climbing trips and it’s perfect for what I need it for. I might be better suited with a point and shoot, but I love geeking out on all the lenses and the learning process of it all 🤷‍♂️. It works for me

    The fact that you explained everything so clearly and thoroughly made this video so interesting. We are currently using Lumix G85 and is looking forward to upgrade to a camera that can both shoot decent video and take nice pictures. Should we stay with the M43 ecosystem or jumping to Sony? Also, we are so going to get the GoPro 7. The stabilization under the water is crazy good!

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you so much Audrey and Huy! That's a great question about making the switch over to Sony. Like I mentioned in the video, if you're heavily invested in one system, then stay with that system and upgrade within. So you'll need to look at how much gear you have that is Lumix specific and decide how painful the switch to Sony would be. If you're shooting one camera and one or two lenses, then maybe making the switch to Sony now would be a good option, that way you can grow within Sony's ecosystem. It was a HUGE leap when I switched to Sony from Canon, but ultimately I knew that long term, I wanted to grow with Sony, so it made sense. I think it's best to work through some numbers and see what making the switch would actually be for you! Hope that helps guys!

    Love these videos! I’ve been so reticent to buy a point and shoot because I got a super cheap one once as a birthday gift and it made my iPhone photos look genius by comparison. Horrid, so grainy, super blurry, tried everything and it just couldn’t fix. Sounds like my experience was just bc of that one bad camera tho!

    I own 4 out of 5 of the cameras in your video, and you are so right. I keep buying entry level DSLR and then not using them. I just bought a6500 and I'm really going to try hard to actually use it, but for 85% of people RX100 V or VI is the best camera out there. The only thing I wish you mentioned in passing is the aperture difference between RX100 V and RX100 VI. You made RX100 V sound inferior, whereas low light capabilities of that camera are superior. I like taking picture in circus shows (when allowed of course) and for that having F1.8 is way nicer. I know you were trying to make the video is more of a quick category overview, but still, I feel that's an important point. Anyway, definitely subscribed to your channel. And "liked" a couple of videos I watched so far. I think your channel is going to do amazing.

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  5 лет назад

      Thank you so much Alexander! Stoked to hear how you like the a6500, I've heard nothing but good things about it, but like you mentioned, sometimes that category is more pain than it's worth. I totally agree with you about the RX100 V vs. VI and I probably should have mentioned it in this video. I did sort of mention that the RX100 lineup needs it's own video at some point, but you're totally right about the V being better in low light because of the wider aperture. With the VI clocking an f/2.8 though, I don't feel terrible about that stop and 1/3 of light being made up with a bit more ISO. Obviously on the extreme ends though, like it sounds that you're shooting, that stop and 1/3 might be the deal breaker! I appreciate you mentioning this and it's definitely making me want to create a whole video for the RX100 series! Super appreciative to have you subscribed Alexander, love your perspective on things!

  • @ClareGPhotos

    Heyo! Congrats on 1k!! (I'm a little late, haha) I really enjoy this video and how you say how you can put these categories into different companies (sony, canon, nikon, etc) instead of saying "buy the canon 1D" "buy (insert specific name here)" I really like that! And you do that, but it's good how even though you say specifics, you can also take all of this information and apply it to the equivalent of the other brands! Like for example, the equivilent-ish RX 100, I would say g7x mark ii, as a canon user I feel like that is a good starter point and shoot camera of canons! I love photography and I'm looking forward to getting into it more as I head off to college! I'm happy I found your channel and I can grow as you do!

      @DavidManningvlog  5 лет назад +1

      Dang Clare, another super kind comment! You're amazing! You're also totally right that the Canon G7X Mark II is the perfect Canon counterpart to the Sony RX100. Hey David, great video as usual and useful since I am considering buying an rx100 V to carry on my motorcycle trips. I think you may have missed an important category in your video which is phone cameras. In your opinion, how do you think the rx100 stacks up against the newest iPhone cameras - say the iPhone 12 Pro with its slightly larger sensor and ProRAW capability. Would truly value your opinion.

    Hey dude! Congrats on 1k, been a long time fan of your content. This is the first one I’ve disagreed with a bit. I think for most casual peeps who are interested in ‘documenting’ but doing it better, I’m totally with you on Rx100 or 10. For a photography enthusiast though, at least someone starting out, but is into the art of photography, I’d have to send them to film. Either that or a very low-frills older digital camera (think canon 5d classic or a7 mark I or Fuji X-T1) with a 50mm prime. An old 35mm SLR can be had for ~$50 and can teach a whole lot about shutter speed/ISO/aperture. Of course this doesn’t work for video, in which case maybe I’d suggest trying to use their phone first? Maybe an a6000, idk. Not a video guy myself. Thoughts?

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  5 лет назад +1

      Ohhhh a purist!!! I love this idea and in my dream world, I would LOVE to do an old school darkroom class with everyone! Having started in high school on a film camera myself, there's nothing that can help you understand photography better than shooting film and then developing it in a darkroom! But there is another side to this and I mentioned it briefly in the video; people don't usually take the time to get there.
      Usually what I hear is that someone is looking to get into photography, so they buy a cheap DSLR or mirrorless, maybe a Canon Rebel or A6300. Then once a week, they pull it out and go outside to take pictures of flowers or their dog. They put it back in the bag and don't touch it again for another week, eventually not pulling it out at all.
      My pitch for the RX100 is that it has all the manual functions that you need AND it's super small so you can have it with you more often! Also, instant results! So you get an RX100 into someone's hands, they shoot with it for an hour a day instead of an hour a week, tweaking and adjusting settings as they go. Maybe they pull it out at lunch to mess around with it, even play around with it at their desk when they're bored with work. They learn faster, they can immediately see the results of their decisions, and hopefully that leads them to dig into photography deeper and THEN move to something like a DSLR, mirrorless, or film camera.
      I guess my whole video is to address that one thing I get told so often about people buying a low end interchangeable lens camera and then being bummed about the results, not ever having their camera with them, and not ever really learning; dropping the hobby completely. Think of the RX100 as the gateway drug of photography! Give em' a little taste so they keep coming back for more! Hahhaaa!!!

    • @DbackNF26
      @DbackNF26 5 лет назад +1

      @@DavidManningvlog Ha!! Not really...I have a stack of Sony gear myself, and started with an a6000. I only later started shooting film and was turned on by its merits. It sort of forces your hand in a way the Rx100 doesn't (auto mode is still always there, along with the zoom). But honestly I agree with everything you said in your response here, especially the last paragraph. The cheap modern ILC's are a serious trap for beginners.
      Maaaaaybe it's a hard sell now-a-days to expect someone to stick with film long enough to learn without getting bored. Hmm. I think it's definitely still a worthwhile venture at some point though, no dark room needed! Loads of camera shops still have film labs or ties to them.

    I've recently started vlogging and capturing moments with my fiancee. I'm using a Canon Elph 300 HS right now but want to upgrade to something thats more interchangeable and adaptable to everything we do. (We go to professional football/soccer games, outdoor adventures with our dog and I take photos sports but would like to video some and vlog my experience while there.) I'm leaning toward the GoPro because of how flexible it is but I would like to create more content, I'm just not real sure of what I want to do right now. Would you steer towards the GoPro or Sony RX100 VI? For photography I am using an older Nikon D5000 but the video is very sub par and it is quite bulky. Sorry for the long comment but you're videos are very inspiring!

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  5 лет назад +2

      Great question Alex! The gap between the GoPro and the Sony RX100 VI is pretty big. For me, I choose the GoPro when I want to be able to bang my camera around quite a bit more and put it in places where my other cameras can't fit or aren't tough enough to go. The RX100 VI though is an incredible all around camera! It has a 1" sensor, flip up screen for selfies of you two on your honeymoon maybe ;) , and can zoom into 200mm for those football/soccer games you're going to. The RX100 VI would replace your Elph and the Nikon D5000 for you! It's definitely an investment, but if you don't think you would use the long zoom very much, you can also look at the RX100 V that's a bit cheaper and has a larger used market out there for it. Hope that helps Alex!

    According to you, I overestimated my need and got A7 III. But I have spent enough time with points & shoot and zoom cameras that my iPhone photos look better than those old cameras so I jumped all the way right. Happy to get into full frame and not A6xxx lineup.

      Michael, thank you so much man! Just watched your "Do the work and just show up" video and it's an awesome encapsulation of the creative struggle. I love the bit when you lean into the idea of seeing all these crazy talented creatives and just thinking, "These people are amazing! What do I even have to offer?". I think that's a constant struggle for any creative, but you nailed it when you said, "what does that even have to do with me?"
      I'm just trying to keep doing the work and leaning into trying to be helpful for others! Stoked to have you follow along and stoked to see what you're going to create! I'm subbed!

      @@DavidManningvlog that's funny and I totally didn't expect that. Well sir, keep up the great work because your videos are sweet! I did have a question about drone footage. And perhaps you could shed some light on it in a separate video. Could you explain the practical application of polarizing ND filters for drone footage? I live near so much water and will be featuring it heavily in most of the shots I'll be taking this summer and would like to better understand how these types of filters can help me and how to actually go about doing it. For reference I'll be using a mavic air 2. Thanks!

      Hey ben, a few changes for sure! The Sony ZV-1 is now my main recommendation for cameras over the RX100 series. It's a pocket camera with full manual controls, a flip out screen, and INCREDIBLE video capabilities! Up from there, I would go a6600, then A7III for most people 👍

    David (cool name btw it means beloved). Congrats on growing 177K more subs 2 years on. My question for 2021 is...do I move from bulky DLSRs and heavy glass (smashed Canon70D during last adventure) to say an iPhone 11 Pro for my wild camping, New Zealand hiking channel where the stills are used manly for my RUclips thumbnails & Instagram uploads? (I use GoPro Hero 7 for the videoing).

    Thanks! Love these videos. I snagged a Nikon6500 (with a crappy 18-55mm + 70-300mm lens) on a Black Friday deal to try and fuel my interest in shooting...but I'm not all that happy with it. I am still figuring out how to confidently shoot on manual mode, but I just want to move to a mirrorless camera with a 2.8 aperture (I think?) because the quality of the photos I'm shooting just aren't the same as the ones I'm idolizing! Such an expensive hobby, but if I got it down I'd love to shoot professionally. I've assisted for years and want to run the show.

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  5 лет назад +1

      Gahhh!!! You're the exact example of who I made this video for! It seems reasonable that moving to an interchangeable lens camera is a good move and I totally get why you did. For the money though, you can either get the best of the best point-and-shoot or the worst interchangeable lens camera. I'm really working to push people towards the RX100 because when you make the jump to interchangeable lens cameras, you really need to buy decent glass to get those images you're dreaming of.
      You mentioned you bought the Nikon 6500, but did you mean 3500? If so, there is a lens that can make that camera pretty sweet for a decent price! Checkout the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Lens. It runs about $375, which I totally realize is almost the price of your kit, but like i mentioned, the glass really does matter. If you're looking to do portraits, that lens is going to get you a LOT closer to what you're imagining than the kit lenses!

    • @ladylonglocks
      @ladylonglocks 5 лет назад +1

      Hah, yes its like it was made to educate me! I just saw the super deal on BF and snagged it without even really doing proper investigating. I do want to buy nicer glass/body in the future but thought I'd enjoy learning on the lower quality set up. Oh man was I wrong!
      You're correct, its the 3500 that was just a mistake on my end. Thank you for the tip! Im totally going to look into the lens, thats not much at all when it comes to buying glass. Would you recommend only buying new? I've seen some used on B&H and craigslist. Maybe it will make this set up more doable while I'm learning and then once I'm comfortable ill move up to the next stage. Trying to keep my stuff in good condition so I can resell it in the future. My friend just got a Sony A7iii and as beautiful as it is, its so overwhelming for me to start with. I can see how you need to start lower and work your way up. Thank you for all the tips! I swear I have a hundred questions but won't overwhelm you, haha. @@DavidManningvlog

    • @ladylonglocks
      @ladylonglocks 5 лет назад +1

      Okay, one question - have you ever rented gear before buying it? I've thought about that before but don't know much about it. (maybe you haven't since you know what you dig)

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  5 лет назад

      Absolutely! Renting gear is an awesome way to try out a lens or new camera before making the sometimes daunting step of making the purchase! Sony has a program for professionals and rentals is a part of the deal.
      Checkout borrowlenses.com though! They have everything you would ever need on there. I saw that you picked up the 50mm, which I'm crazy stoked for you, but for your next pickup, you can always give it a test run first! Stoked to see what you get to creating :)

    Your honesty is so greatly appreciated. I’ve been dipping my toes into a hobby of photography since I took a class back in college and was made to feel like I had to have a DSLR in order to do so. I found this when looking into upgrading from a point and shoot to a dslr and now I feel like I don’t need to.

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  5 лет назад

      I totally get that Taylor! It's a bummer that there's that misperception out there. Whatever camera you're using, you can play with it to understand ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. If you haven't checked it out yet, I made a video to understand the three! Hope it helps!

      David Manning yeah man I understand each event has a appropriate lens to be used. But what would you say 80-90% of the people would be using for a good all around lens? And I mean probably something like having a basic lens that would fall under when you want to vlog and then take videos throughout the day.

    I've been a very satisfied RX100M4 owner with it's low light abilities, and am considering upgrading. I'm torn between the low light abilities of the M5A vs the extra zoom of the M6. Do you think the low light abilities of an M6 are that much worse in practical use?

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  5 лет назад

      That's a hard question Larry! I was torn myself and I think you framed the question perfectly, zoom or low light? For me, I like the extra range and compression that I can get out of the 200mm focal length. It's a look that you just don't see usually in a point and shoot. When it comes to low light, the sensors in both cameras are the same, but the Mark V has a wider aperture, so to get the same light, you need to bump the ISO on the Mark VI. For things that I'm shooting with the RX100, I'm usually more looking to capture a moment, rather than create a perfect image, so a bit more noise is okay, and I can tone it down a bit in post as well. For me the Mark VI was the way to go, but you'll have to answer the question of which is more important for yourself! Let me know what you end up going with Larry!
