I truly mean this when I say that this is one of my favorite videos that Ginger Root has made thus far. Sound wise I wanted “Only You” to be my last “on the nose” attempt at writing a classic “driving down the highway at night time type city pop track”, but I think it turned out to be something much more than the genre I’ve been so closely associated with. Video wise, I told David I wanted to try to push for something more abstract. I wanted to push ourselves to make something out of our comfort zone. So we filmed it separately in two completely different countries. God I hope the algorithm lets people see this one because if there’s any video I wish people watch from the “SHINBANGUMI” cycle, it’s this one. Of course, could not have done it without GR team USA and GR team Japan. Thank you for taking the time to read and watch.
Genuinely an achievement - congrats to everyone involved! I now have my onboarding music video to lure people to the October show in MN, or Chicago, or both.
I'm not gonna lie, something about this video made me genuinely cry. I dunno if it makes sense or if it was the goal, but in my interpretation, this video (especially in conjunction with the plot with the singles of this album so far) is a metaphor for the feeling of being an artist surrounded by your creations -- your pride and joy, your expression of your soul, your culmination of your life's experience as an artist -- and suddenly buckling and being overwhelmed by everything all falling onto you. You've created something beautiful and poignant that means a lot to yourself and a lot of people, but now the stakes people have imposed about it and the consequences on your decisions surrounding it have caused it to turn on you -- making you feel like you're trapped in your own dreams until you feel like it's become a nightmare, and with the knowledge that you'll eventually have to wake up and make a very tough decision that's going to affect you and everyone around you on whether it gets to continue. As a struggling creative trying to make it in the world, dealing with concerns of my ability to pursue my dreams and create what I want, especially under the understanding that there are extremely big people in high places of corporate power who want to do very troubling things to me for my artwork... it's quite sobering to see all those concerns manifest into such a well-made, tense, but beautiful music video. Thank you Mr. Root, long live Ginger Root Productions.
I won't lie, I am bit saddened that this will be the last on the nose city-pop esque sounding song you'll be making, but make no mistake I'll still continue listening to your future tracks!
Well, Ginger Root is an Agressive Elevator Soul™ project who happens to have a so-called City Pop revival era. Expect the unexpected from them. (Exhibit A: They have covers of Merle Haggard and Britney Spears songs)
1:58 is my favorite part ! Each times it goes back to Cameron and he is like "wtf" ? And the stance, the body language, how he moves omg, it's so iconic ! Love it. I could just rewatch these parts on replay, haha. So satisfying. Be wary you might become an anime/comic character ! (maybe he's on the way to.. !)
At this point I don’t know if I’m hurriedly clicking on these videos because I like the music or I’m invested in this story. But I’m going to be here for every video.
The "SHINBANGUMI" timeline has already been, by far some of the most creative & original compositions ever to come out on youtube. no one directs like you mr.root
Proud member of Juban Network, the TV station conglomerate of your dreams. But really, this video has resonated with me the most out of all of them so far. It's relatable to have anxiety about making life decisions, especially when it affects others around you, and when it feels like you could be "missing out" on whatever you don't pick. Sylvia Plath's Fig Tree analogy and all that. Also sometimes wanting to chase outside opinions to give you the answer when really you just need to make decisions for yourself. I took 2:58 as an attempt to explore multiple options at once but it turning out to be unfeasible and chaotic. Anyway, that's my takeaway, and late to comment but just wanted to jot down my thoughts. The ambiguity of this video will lead others to have different interpretations, which is partly what's so great about it. I get Charlie Kaufman vibes, which is high praise coming from this cinephile 😅 Really well done 👏
This song is touching. I was moved to tears when I saw the Ginger Root worldview pass by. It's fantastic. Maybe I will think that it is the best song and direction. You are a best always!!! Those were my best four minutes.
I don’t know how many times I’ve listened to this song. Especially the video itself it’s so colorful and it brings me early 2000s vibes of visual edits
This whole music video blows me away. I found it on instagram, and was pretty intrigued, and honestly that was an amazing position. I used to be so picky about music, and I feel that this song in particular really broadened up my taste (in like the best way possible). Thanks Ginger Root :)
This MV is a visual representation of how I sound when I try to explain the Loonaverse to an innocent bystander. I love it and will show it to all my friends.
And here I thought “No Problems” was going to take the cake for me, but no lie this track is growing on me everyday like crazy… “watch for the signs cause I’m already broke…” love it! Keep on Ginger!
What a masterpiece from a narrative, visual, and sonic perspective. So beautiful on lighting, editing, stylistically. Thank you so much for this❤. It is so cherished and will continue to be for generations im sure of it. So excited for the album and totally seeing yall live! Cheers!
This video is incredible, I love everything about it and it gives a bit of a Michel Gondry vibe. I can't think of a better way to describe it. It goes so well with this banger of a music !
keep coming back to listen to this, it just has such a raw emotional vulnerability to it that i cant describe. definitely one of my favorite mvs of all time now
The music video reminds me of a character called Alan Wake and his whole premises is that he's a writer stuck in his own works of fiction so everytime he writes himself in another one of his stories he has to desperately get out.
Well. I've listened to this and watched it at least 500 times in the last week since it was released. Here are my thoughts. This is without a doubt one of the most powerful pieces of media I have ever seen, and I don't say that lightly. The music is masterfully construcuted, the video has a deep level of metaphors and I can tell it meant something very important in the way it was portrayed. The amount of catharsis you must have felt to put this out into the world even gives me relief. Thank you so much for releasing this, I'll treasure it always and so should you Cameron.
I grew up on music videos, watched them all the time at every opportunity as a younger kid. Watching your videos today reminds me of those times and makes me just as happy as I was then. I love your work so much! Thankyou for creating all this amazingly nostalgic stuff!
To face the new challenge as it should be, now without the treacherous and annoying ex-manager fired🤣, with your new team and with the help of Kimiko...to recover the lost hegemony!👍
This music video really hits all the spots, I love the feel and design. It's really what everyone who loves 70-80s retro media's inner brain looks like.
This is probably the coolest video I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Your music and videos bring me so much joy. I hope as many people as possible can watch this!!!
I don't know what it is about seeing straight-laced salarymen cut loose and dance their hearts out but between the fellow at 3:10 and KIRINJI's Jikan Ga Nai it sure does my heart good. Similar musical vibes, too, probably why I like Ginger Root.
The cinematography and editing is incredible! Such a chill beat, yet it's got some spunk to it that makes it stand out. And you can't just leave us on that cliffhanger! I'm hooked!
Every time Ginger Root uploads, the quality increases. The consistency here is crazy, keep it up man! And the little easter egg for “Le Chateau”, *chefs kiss*.
Basically he is imagining how his control over the IP will completely be lost, and that handling things himself will avoid him a disappointing outcome for his life and career, and that of his story. His hands would be tied. but he has the choice to change that right now. Love Ginger Root, love life.
I saw this live in Montreal Canada! It was a great last song before he came back on encore! I love the fan engagement you had on your show in canada! I look forward to seeing another show in the future maybe in Japan!

It was amazing! Great pacing, creative cinematography and awesome song!
Pls release no problems ringtone
I never found any GR song to be "on the nose" it's all well and truly, Ginger Root.
You make really unique stuff, thanks

I second this beautifully descriptive comment.
Yooo wtf it's not dat deep 😭

It made me cry too. The love of the creation. The struggle to make it.
Honestly, ginger roots unique sound is everything to me. No one can make agressive elavator soul music quite like Cameron can.
Bro. He pulled a Shinji. A+
I’m so glad I’m not the only one to have caught onto the NGE reference in the video 🤣

1:07 It would be so easy to convince me that Mr. Root made this whole video just to show off his absolutely sick drumstick spin.
Oh yeah, we're GROOVING with this one
The effect this song has on animals is amazing, my dog did a flip! :O
