- "Loneliness" is the first single off of Ginger Root's next EP, "Nisemono" out Sept 9th on Acrophase Records. The year is 1983, Ginger Root is asked to write and produce songs for up-and-coming Japanese idol, Kimiko Takeguchi. Right before Kimiko's America debut, she quits, leaving her manager to make the last minute decision of having Ginger Root perform in her place since he knows all the songs. By coincidence, a new star is born. "Nisemono" or 「偽物」means fake or fraud. The EP touches on imposter syndrome, and not feeling like yourself.

ロレッタがオススメに出てきてその流れで聴きにきたのだけど、映像から何から本人のプロデュースでやってるとかで何この才能溢れる人。
曲もストーリーも日本の80年代のシティポップや、意図せずスターダムに突然登り詰めてしまったりする状況を的確に表現してる。
当時の作品へのリスペクトを残しながら、現代の楽曲になってて英語での歌唱がマッチしてて天才。
素晴らしい。
同曲の日本語Version，竹口希美子のも80年代を意識した映像でイイですよ👍

I love the voice on the singer girl trowing the tantrum. So Showa. You don't hear those kind of voices anymore, which adds to the authenticity.
Proud of you Kimiko, there's enough history of idol's being treated poorly.
Really too bad about Cameron though. My man just wanted to be a song writer and now he's going to get eaten up by the idol industry, damn shame. Who knows though, maybe he'll be able to break away into film and get some autonomy from the agency.
Unless Kimiko had a plan B or was super-rich, she would be very struggling to live through rest of her life in Japan.

The only person to perfectly nail the VHS 80’s TV look. For more people, you can tell that it still looks modern when they try for this aesthetic but this feels like you jumped in a time machine for this. Great tune Ginger Root

They nail the 80s-90s aesthetic pretty well too.
The team uses the actual equipment from the time, based on their TikTok. And uses it properly too. But this guy has really captured the "feeling" of the 80s in some intangible way.
I said 90s because that's when I grew up, but honestly the old TV's before flat screen and LCD screens... I feel like I need a composite cable to watch it. (The red white yellow ones for people who didn't grow up with it)
I am Japanese, but I feel very nostalgic as if it were a Japanese song show from the 80s and 90s. Literally this music video is the best.
The idea of imposter syndrome rings true not just for Ginger Root but also for Kimiko in this video. This sense of whether something is destructive or benevolent. Passing on a possible opportunity because it feels like a cage, and then seeing someone else thrive in that environment, resulting in FOMO. There's so much happening here. It's wonderful. I mean, it's sad and tragic, but it's amazing.
And that bassline.
I have to agree I'm excited to see if the other song plays along with the storyline of this one because I love how the themes are applied. Also the fact that the new EP is called Nisemono or 偽者 in japanese means impostor or liar ties in really well.

I kind of hope things work out for Kimiko as well. She left her label hanging, which isn't cool, and outwardly it seems like her motivations were selfishness and ego. But maybe the moment just felt too big for her. She wondered if she could handle success, if she even deserves to be successful. In other words, maybe she has some imposter syndrome as well. So if there's more to this story I kind of want her to be OK too.

Ginger Rootは単純な懐メロ指向やパロディでは留まらず、今の時代から観た当時感みたいなものを再現するのが上手すぎる！もちろん曲も良いし新曲なのにノスタルジックな日本のアイドルソング感あるの面白すぎる
I guess surely that Kimiko Takeguchi was inspired by Seiko Matsuda (松田 聖子). I think the airport scene was also inspired by the Japanese programme "The Best Ten (ザ • ベストテン)" in the episode that Seiko's song "Ao i Sangoshou (青い珊瑚礁)" was ranked in the programme for the first time in 1980.

I remember my business trip to Tokyo back in early 1984 (back in my Enron days) there was a radio playing this song on every street corner.

Something about the manager in the red power suit is cool, even when panicking about her star quitting out of the blue she scrambles to figure out a solution, that's so 80s/early 90s.
EDIT: Just noticed in the video that during their success story interview her name is subtitled as "Manager-san" from "Acrophase Company", which happens to be the name of the label releasing Ginger Root's records, amazing attention to detail. 😆
