- DIY Gull Wing Window with locks using Lexan.
This gull wing window did turn out pretty fantastic, however, there are a good bit of minor issues that came up. One, obviously, is the use of the lexan. Now, in other applications, lexan would be a fantastic choice but just not for my application, so I will need to update it in the near future. But, the Lexan Gull Wing Window looks sooo good on my 1999 Chevrolet Astro Van. Although it is flimsy, I am very happy with the results.
If you are thinking about doing this, DO IT. All you have to do is be creative and you can create your own masterpiece, even if it isn't perfect.

This guy and his girl are just too likable. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your journey.
Thank you for the kind words 😁
Bad ass work dude. Im going to go to a junk yard an see if i get lucky maybe a flat piece of metal like off of another van or a hood of a car idk
You rock. Great job man.
Oh😲 I just thought of how it can be done.
Home Depot has metal angle iron and these other strips of hard metal just like angle iron, except not angled,😅 but flat, around an inch or two wide and in different lengths.
Put one strip on the top edge and one of the same length on the inside top edge and sandwich the lexan between them them and drill holes through the layers and rivet it all around. Same for the bottom edge and left and right edges.
The curved corners would have to be fabricated and cut into shape with an angle grinder or jigsaw with a hacksaw style blade on it.😎
What do you think?😁
Some black vinyl on that instead of black paint would be better and easier.
Very creative thank you for your video,I have a SAFARY and I starter to think about it, GMC made a mistake by not design open windows in the back
yes , I would like an open window
Ayyy congrats on 17.5 k Broo keep up this amazing workk
Thank you Tj 🙏🙏 always trying my best with what I have. Hope you are doing well!
Easy to break into.
It definitely is. I'm planning to replace it very soon on my other channel
Good job for a beginner!
I appreciate it! I’ll be replacing it with aluminum pretty soon
I would recommend 3/16 aluminum. Great job
I’ll take note on that whenever I redo it. Thank you
Nice
Been here since 2.5k, good stuff bro!
Ayyy! Thank you 🙏🙏 I appreciate the support!
What content do you enjoy most?
Hi bro.
I know you already changed that window to another material, but I had an idea that could have stiffened up that lexan glass. Even though I don't exactly know how to forge one myself, or where to have it done for you.
You could have made or gotten a metal frame made for the edges. It would have closed tighter and less flex.😁
Looks good! Cool idea! Just be aware if you replace it with metal that the thicker you go, the more sturdy it will be for the struts, but also the less it will be able to bend to match the contour of the body of the van when closed. I wonder if a factory window would work to make a gull wing door? because then it would match the contour lines perfectly, but still be rigid and sturdy. But I don't really know if its possible to drill through glass....Haven't tried it :)
I actually don’t think that will be a huge issue, especially since there isn’t a huge amount of curvature. However, I’ve been contemplating on using thicker gauge aluminum, which should bend a little to the body lines all while being sturdy. Not 100% sure though. I’m planning on changing it sometime when I paint the van.
I think the factory glass would be too complicated to make work and expensive. The windows alone are about $150.
I have tried to drill through a car window after be5told not to and they were right just when I thought it was gonna work it shattered
You should wet sand and polish the paint so it will have a nice glassy smooth surface. Instead of metal, you could just use a thicker piece of lexan, as the one you used was pretty thin.
I'm not sure what would be best to use either, there would be issues with light gage metal as well. One thing I would be worried about with the Lexan is the when you drive it how much flex and vibration the wind will make. Great job though, looks good.
That is actually one of my concerns. I have yet to test drive the van because I still need to change all the fluids, install new tires, windshield, and battery. But all that costs money I can’t spend at the moment.
I was thinking of using a thicker gauge aluminum. What do you think?
@@AutoMotivate That may work really well, at least now, if you do change it, you have a template that you know works. Yeah, projects always cost more than what you think they should. Just think next summer you guys will be sleeping in it!!!
lets see this driving down the hwy. flap flap flap flap wow bro 10/10 for imagination
No flapping, however, I do intend on upgrading it soon.
Great Video. Great editing. Great sound.
You should also show your teammates' faces and give credit to them.
I have 2002 Safari. I am vicariously rebuilding my van too.
Your videos teach me with imagination, one can do anything.
You look even greater after the hair cut. 😎😎
Which town are you located in.
(Would love you to work on my van)
Thanks for such fun videos. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎Home Depot has clear thin plexiglass that you could have used and cut to the same size as your plastic and you could have glued it directly over your plastic.
It would have matched your tinted windows perfectly.
No off color.
Just be sure to paint the back of the plexiglass with black paint before gluing it over your original plastic. Then add the rubber seal trim around the edges like before.
These can be glued directly to a cargo van that has no windows, to fool people into thinking that it has windows. 🤔😲😀
I was actually thinking of using a single plexiglass sheet and “window welding” it into place. That is a pretty good idea, though.
@@AutoMotivate 😡😡😡😡No! You must do it my way!😡😡😡
Just kidding bro. 😂😂😂😂😂
how thick was your lexan young man? Wonderful job young Man
Thank you Jody! If I remember correctly, it was 3/16th, however, I would use a thicker piece of aluminum next time
What was your cost for doing it yourself?
inspection?
will this pass
I’m actually not sure of the particular rules, and depending where you are, rules may be different.
However, the plastic is flimsy and I’m going to redo it with 3/16 aluminum pretty soon.

or you can use plexiglass at least 1/4 or thicker.
😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎Use a black silicone adhesive to stick on a thin quarter inch plywood to the inside of the plastic hatch.
Cover the entire back of your plastic cut out, except about a quarter inch to half inch from the edges. Your homemade hatch should shut flush and be much more rigid and wont be flimsy.😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
I think I’m going to take you up on this idea. Very feasible and seems easy enough to do. Thank you for the idea! I’ll probably start working on that whenever we start building out the interior
You need to invest on a workbench/table in the future for your health.
I totally agree. But, I am moving in about 6 months and would hate if I built/buy one and it didn’t fit in my next location.
Maybe I’ll invest in a fold out table, especially since I’m planning on building out the interior soon.
@@AutoMotivate the fold out table is a good option but you gotta make sure it's on even ground if you're planning on building up the future projects you got on mind for that van or other stuff.
Cause men it's a pain in the butt when that uneven surface screw your project over.
you looked better BEFORE the hair chop job.
Haha, I have my girlfriend cut it and we are slowly figuring out the best way to cut it.
I miss your energy
It’s always nice seeing a notification like this 🙏
I actually started a new channel dedicated to me working on stuff like this.

Thank you Shore 🙏
Messy I'd be ashamed of it myself. Should of done a trial fit find better hinges, for your 1st time guess it'll be alright, I always say I've learned by my mistakes dude just keep it going never mind my comment Sir! Catch you on the next video.
😂 your comment had me all types of ways.
I actually re-did it (with the same hinges because I don’t want to deal with the holes) but with better latches and a thick cut of aluminum on my other channel
doesn't look good to me
