  • I walk you step by step of the process I took to replace the Transmission Fluid and Filter in my Chevrolet Astro van. This is a identical process in the GMC Safari and it is a similar process with an GM Vehicle with a 4l60E, 4L65E and 4L70E Transmission.
    The link to the products are only for the 4L60E Trans, so be sure you look up the proper parts and fluids for YOUR transmission.
    Hope this helped you out!
    I like to show you all my faults so you dont have to make them.

    This video saved me an enormous amount of grief! I had no idea that the filter gasket was up in there in a way that it wouldn't just pull out easily. The screwdriver/pliers/socket method worked perfectly, and the new gasket went into place very easily. Thanks for the video!

    Next change in trans. Install a B&M drain plug kit they are about 10 bucks makes it so much easier. Also 1/2 of the fluid is still in the torque converter so you may want to change it again soon.

    • @Deucealive75
      @Deucealive75 2 года назад +3

      Yeah that's been the way with most automatics for years. You are putting 4 quarts on top of 4 quarts or more of bad fluid. Year ago many Fords and some Chrysler had drain plugs on the converter. GM never did.

    the only way to check automatic transmission fluid is to start the car, shift into all gears (P, N, Dr. S, L, R) for a few seconds each and check the fluid with the car in Neutral with the car running.

      AstroSafariVans.com & some other forums but yeah not a whole lot of good videos. Bought mine for $600 beginning of year and it overheated bad driving it back to house, was leaking a lot of coolant and I ended up towing it thanks to AAA. I'll be putting in a radiator, water pump, fan clutch, tune up kit. Looks like someone tried to cut the floor to get to fuel pump but no opening was made, weird. I think the float is busted on fuel pump so will put in a fuel pump/fuel filter. Van is in good shape being a no rust Texas truck, same color as yours, mine is a cargo but does have windows on back doors & sliding door. I'm adding two new side mirrors along with two door handles. Then like any older vehicle start making things work & look better with some elbow grease. I'll probably do the transmission fluid change after watching your video so thanks for that...I hope. I know you said stealth but I'm thinking I want to do a small lift kit like from Journeys, not sure but in the mean time will be chasing down some codes I scanned thinking about the build I want to do. Thanks again

    Thank you for such awesome videos! I just sold my 2003 astro with 250k+ miles, and bought a 1998 astro with only 60k! I never committed to the camper build in my old van due to high mileage but psyched on building out my new one. I'm already planning to use some of your other videos to fix a couple easier things.
    Have you ever had any issues with the gear shift indicator? It seems to be shifting just fine, but its just the indicator light that's all wonky (flashes on and off, doesn't align with which gear I'm actually in, etc.). It's been through some really cold temps, as well as driving through some flooded areas lately so I'm not sure if that may have something to do with it.

    • @AutoMotivate
      @AutoMotivate  3 года назад +3

      I had zero issues prior but I only really drove it once with a failing fuel pump (I bought it barely running). The previous owner neglected the hell out of it. I decided to add fresh fluids and replace most of the common issues on the van to prevent any future issues.
      I'm sure if you replace the fluid and filter, you should be okay.
      If that doesn't fix your issues then there are quite a few writeups that explain different issues with the 4L60E transmission and the potential fixes.

    Everything shifts correctly after changing the fluids?

    • @AutoMotivate
      @AutoMotivate  Год назад

      Yup! Nice and clean. The theory behind just changing the fluid and the trans going bad is folks not dropping the pan when the oils hasn’t been changed for a very long time. The old fluid wilL get broken up by the new fluid and clog the trans oil pump. By dropping the pan, you get rid of all the thick bad oil and prevent that from happening.
