Before the unification of Germany, the watch industry in Glashutte was centralized under one brand: GUB, and Lange was a sorte of a spin-off of GUB. Glashutte original was created from what was left of GUB after A. Lange & Sohne separated. So the panoreserve and the panomatic are actually original designs based on GUB’s heritage.
Concur. Reason for vague description is the confusion with Lange under communism (and after) and the legacy of 1933-1945. Not all history is something to boast about.
I think part of the reason they don't really state the founding year very clearly, is that it's actually pretty difficult to define in this case. Is it 1994 or maybe 1951? To be fair, A Lange & Söhne doesn't exactly advertise the fact that it was actually (re-)founded in 1990.
Walter Lange bailed to the west before the formation of East Germany. Afterwards the Glashutte companies were centralized into GUB, thus in a way, GO has more of a right to the designs of GUB compared to that carpetbagger Walter Lange (not judging Walter for bailing before the Soviet takeover). To the best of my knowledge, Glashutte Original, as a brand, came into being after the unification of Germany in the early 90s. Prior to that, all watchmaking in Glashutte was under the GUB brand, as part of the communist era. The GUB also incorporated A Lange & Sohne, and technically Glashutte Original is the legal successor to Ferdinand Lange's company, with Lange a whole new company. Watchmaking has been an industry in Glashutte since the 19th century. The term "Glashutte original" comes from the fact that watchmaking from the area was so well respected that other companies adopted its styling, so in the same way Swiss brands use "Swiss made" to identify the quality of their products, watchmakers in Glashutte adopted "Glashutte original" - as in, these are the originators of the styling and manufacturing. When the Communist party took over Germany, all the watchmakers in Glashutte were combined into the one company - GUB. After reunification, Lange split off and became (or revived) A Lange & Sohne, while most of the other companies that had been consumed into GUB remained together and rebranded as Glashutte Original.

The history of Glashütte Original dates back to the mid-19th century, when Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded his watchmaking company in Glashütte, Germany. Lange was joined by other skilled watchmakers, and over time, Glashütte became a center of precision watchmaking in Germany. After World War II, the East German government nationalized the watchmaking industry in Glashütte, and the various companies in the town were consolidated into a single state-owned enterprise called VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB). Despite the challenges of operating under communist rule, GUB continued to produce high-quality watches, including the iconic Spezimatic line of automatic watches. Following the reunification of Germany in 1990, GUB was privatized and eventually rebranded as Glashütte Original in 1994. Under its new name, the company began producing high-end mechanical watches that were entirely designed, developed, and manufactured in-house. Before Swatch acquired Glashütte Original in 2000, the company had already established a reputation for producing exceptional watches, including the Senator, which was introduced in 1997 and quickly became one of the brand's most popular models. The Senator was notable for its elegant, understated design and its range of complications, including a power reserve indicator, a panorama date, and a moon phase display.
I love GO. My biggest problem is when JLC offer similar products for a similar price point but with an 8 year warranty and the story to go with the watches I buy JLC every time. If GO increased their warranties to match a JLC it would make them a far more interesting proposition when forking out £8000
I partially agree - I love both brands. My biggest issue with JLC is their QC and after-sales service leaves a lot to be desired. Lots of examples on the forums too. I had a less than stellar experience after a 4 month old Reverso started having an issue with its case. I also had a poor experience with Panerai so maybe it’s a Richemont thing - I had another forum member share his horrible experience with VC after having a problem. I’ve never had issues with Swatch Group service so that alone would tilt me to GO.
The modern name "Glashütte Original" is a reference back to the early days of watchmaking in the Glashütte region. In an attempt to sell inferior movements for a premium price, other less renown watchmaking areas were adding the terms "System Glashütte" to their timepieces and often simulating traditional Glashütte decoration and finishing work. As a response, the watchmaking houses in Glashütte started inscribing the word "Original" to their watch movements and clockwork to indicate a given timepiece was really from Glashütte
I honestly don't think that people outside the watch world would know what a DateJust is. Most people would just say that 'Rolex' is a good watch or make good watches.
They are the original. Tim Mosso has stated the story many times. Also, comparing their price to a Rolex Submariner is a joke because the workmanship is not in the same world. The Rolex is machine made. If it had a glass back the Glashutte would make it look like a Timex. I have 3 Rolex watches and 1 Panolunar in gold.
Exactly. I sometimes feel other watch RUclipsrs need to watch a few videos from Tim to do research before creating their own videos. Tim Mosso - watch GOAT.
It seems like y'all didn't do any research on where this brand came from. GO has such an interesting history that ties into the Cold War and Soviet controlled East Germany. Another comment already explained the brief history with GUB, GO, and Lange so go check it out!
19:18 that is exactly the story. Other regions and countries were copying Glashutte and using the name "Glashutte Process" to indicate that the way the watch was made was in the Glashutte style. GO became a stamp to indicate the actual region the watch was made from.
My understanding is that Glashutte Original is a descendant of all the Eastern German brands including Lange after they were unified into one state company (GUB) ( under communist control) until Germany's reunification after which Lange split off as an independent brand leaving what was left as Glashütter Uhrenbetrieb which uses the brand name Glashutte Original. Speaking of brands named after a location with "Original" tacked on... Where did the two of you do your clothes shopping for this episode, "Hackensack Original?"
The Glashutte segment of this episode bothered me so much I had to come back and write this. From Michael seemingly surprised (how does someone in the biz not know GO well), how is it a copy (rip off??) of Lange One, though similar, not arguing that. Also, SeaQ same price as Sub? Except the GO details are off the charts, it's a vintage design (from GUP I think) and you CAN'T GET a Sub! Talk pre-owned, there's not even a question. Although the assessment on their branding is spot on everything else was shaking at best. Lange and GO were the same compani until Germany unification in the 90s, they have as much right to be there and use that design as ALS. Sorry for the drawn-out post but I love G.O. not a company to show off your wealth but to enjoy true artisanship and watchmaking .
With regards to the idea that GO copies Lange design on some models, does it come into the play the idea I’ve heard/read before that GO actually has the best lineage claim of the brand the FA Lange originally started, rather than current-day A. Lange & Sohne?
From what I gather Glashutte Original was started by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in 1843. In 1845 Julius Assman, Moritz Grossmann and Adolf Schneider joined in.
I wanted a rolex sub or sea dweller. But as I've delved deeper and deeper into watches I changed my mind and now want a glashuette original seaq pano and a green/gold lunarpanomatic
So glad to hear your comments on the Datejust. Let's face it no Rolex is easy to get and they are all quality timepieces and expensive. For me, the Datejust fit my style anesthetic the best. Still had to wait 3 months for it. I would love to get a GMT or Daytona next but if it doesn't happen it's not the end of the world. I would be happy with the Datejust. I am tired of "only a Datejust" comments or even worse "only a ladies Datejust."
Took me ages to decide between my reverso or a datejust. Glad I got the reverso but I still wish I had the dj sometimes. Got my heart set on a buckley dial one next.
Would make an epic combo! 36mm Datejust was my first luxury watch and I've recently added a Cartier Tank Must. I've always admired the Reverso, you never know 🤷🏻♂️
I think this is the worst episode I watched and I did enjoy you two guys. How can you talk about a watch brand (GO) without doing your homework so if you not have clue be careful to judge. The name Glashütte ‚ORIGINAL‘ was well choosen, because they are the real remains of GUB, Lange was a marketing excercise that came out of it.
In regards to GO, I have been staring at the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date for quite awhile - it just keeps beckoning me to the rocks like a siren...
When it comes to German watches have a look at Dornbluth & Sohn, in an age when high end watches are made by computers and then put together by a person, these are genuinely hand made by artisans in house. Incredible value and the history is fascinating.
I second this - Dornbluth and Sohne make some exceptional watches, not just for the price point, but overall. They're all handmade by a very small team, and the quality and attention to detail is outstanding. Also, if budget could stretch to it, Moritz Grossman and Lang & Heyne make small batches of watches that rival - or even beat - A Lange Sohne, nevermind the mass produced, so-called Holy Trinity of PP, AP and VC. Even Tutima has higher-end offerings like minute repeaters that could be from the House of Stern. German watchmaking has different aesthetics to Swiss watchmaking, but the quality cannot be denied.
Op, Explorer and datejust are the best rolexes. Depending if you want something more casual, sporty or dressy you buy one or the other. The next level of the datejust is the day date with the president bracelet but It has a differenti price point
I followed much the same logic when I thought of buying a. Rolex. I don't have mad money, but the OP just seems too "entry level." Getting a Datejust says you didn't cheap out. You got a real Rolex. I got on the list for one, but I've kinda given up on the brand honestly. The AD experience is terrible, and I don't feel right giving them my money. And (no offense) I don't want to go vintage. So I'm buying an Omega Aqua Terra tomorrow, which to me is a much better watch, and while it doesn't tell the world I've made it as well as a Rolex would, I've decided that's not as important as treating myself to a comfortable buying experience. Also we have the same birthday. That and our love for watches are probably the only thing we have in common. ;-)
@@stevenjm12 I said I don't have mad money... meaning I don't have the money for just ANY Rolex... but I appreciate your contribution because it illustrates one of the problems I have with the Rolex "enthusiast" community and how they think they know enough to gatekeep potential buyers who they deem not financially qualified to buy one. It's just another form of snobbery that turns me off the brand.
Jaquet Droz is actually one of the oldest watch companies in history. Weird, I know. Their website says they were founded in 1721 - way before Swatch Group existed.
Ah Datejust... ❤️ After several years of watch geekery, owning an 1861 Speedy, then an Aqua Terra 2003 black dial, Hamilton etc, and obsessing over the Sub and Explorer, I've made up my mind .. after several AD visits, I've realised how amazing the DateJust 36mm is.... I'm on the list for silver dial, fluted on jubilee... it changes colour in different light, it's timeless, gorgeous and so comfy... I'm so glad I didn't go with the hype and those impossible to find sports models.... the DJ really can be the one watch for life, and if it helps me get something else some day, like that Explorer, then why not..I do feel that building some kind of relationship with the AD is worth it... Edit - forgot to mention my watches while I wait for the call - F91W casio golden accents and the square 5600e G shock... God Tier !
I have 2 GO's. Panomaticlunar Green dial and just picked up a SeaQ 39.5 Blue dial. I love both. My issues with the Lange 1 is the lug are just too long for my small wrist. 47mm for the GO vs 50mm for the Lange 1 lug to lug. I also prefer the date wheel on the GO. It took me a while to get the SeaQ because of the price but finally pulled the trigger a couple weeks ago and so glad I did. The size is perfect and the on the fly glide lock bracelet is amazing. Oh and you can get a discount of GO's
Guys, you should check out the 2 great watches from Glashutte; The chronometre and Panograph. Thanks for bringing them up, kind of forgotten about them
I don't have a problem wearing a Burei until a Datejust becomes affordable for me. I think the thing I love the most about Harrison Ford is that he went to Ripon College.
They're named after a location and called original because they were the original! Thats the point. All the clocks in the airport lounges in Frankfurt are Glaushutte Original. 99% of the world won't know the difference between GO and Lange, probably easier to service the GO as well. I have no German watches and I'm a fan of both brands. I do agree a lot of the GO pieces are overpriced relative to other brands, I would not pay $22 or $20K for that diver in a million years, I'd go with something vintage or Tudor or whatever, that is just too expensive for what it is.
My first Rolex was a Yacht-Master Rhodium. Preferred the case and dimensions, and I was never keen on a GMT function I don’t need, or a Chrono I would rarely use. My AD said I could get a sub if I wanted but I went with the new mint green DateJust. I chose the smooth bezel and jubilee bracelet so I could wear it all the time. Also I wanted the jubilee bracelet but with the fluted bezel it looks too busy. I don’t think I’d want any bezel on any watch fluted. I prefer the DJ to all the sports watches including my own Yacht Master. For me, I have no interest in the sub, gmt or Daytona and I barely wear the Yacht Master these days. Always want to put the DateJust on. Funny thing is I was originally going to get an ALS Saxonia. But I knew I wouldn’t wear a leather strap watch much and a steel bracelet would be more versatile. I’m so glad I got the DateJust instead because it’s half the price and it’s exactly the watch that suited my tastes/needs. One of the best all round watches. A lot of these other sports watches are overrated imo.
I wanted the Paul Newman Datejust, from the Movie The Colour Of Money. That was the watch that got me into all things watch.. I almost purchased it but I fell in love with the 36mm OP steel dial after reading a Hodinkee article from 2015, amusingly enough it was referred to as a woman’s watch lol
Glashutte and that valley was in Cccp hands until like the fall of the Berlin wall. Nomos was started i. 1992 I believe although that valley was making watches since the beginning. The Us bombed the civilian population of Dresden during the War so much that there is still bad blood towards us in that area.
Its funny because Ive always felt the same EXACT way about GO as Michael does. Absolutely LOVE the brand and will still buy one but I completely agree on the name thing.
Hot take: I far prefer the Panomatic Lunar's dial to the Lange 1's dial. Something about the way the small seconds subdial on the Lange is tangent to the main dial bothers me. The Panomatic's subdial placement seems just more visually satisfying. GO's problem is that it is essentially the surviving company of the old GUB state-owned watch factory.
On the topic of a date just, I’m split. I have a place in my heart for a vintage one but going from 36 to 41mm, it annoys me the date just doesn’t have an in between .
In some ways the GO is better executed than the Lange 1. For example, just look at the date wheels on both. The ALS date wheels are on different planes where the GO is on the same and looks a lot cleaner. PS, I love ALS.
there is a reason why GO designs look like lange. I wont spoil you, go chech it out. i was expecting michael at least to be better informed on this matter.
I don’t get the idea of name of the brand being after a place. In the Uk a lot of things are at least styles of things. Chesterfield Sofas, Derby shoes, Harris tweed and lots more
It’s hard to explain the brand story because Glashutte Original was the same company as A Lange Shone. All watchmakers in Glasuhutte were nationalized into one company. An example of Eastern Germany’s communist past. So it’s an interesting story but told terribly. So GO is not a copy of ALS.
I'll beat this dead horse: how about applying the same level of analysis to the Girard-Perregaux Laureato? Surely G-P has an even more compelling claim to brand distinctiveness than GO, and certainly more history; and the Laureato - "ripoff" of the Royal Oak you may say it is - is likewise a tremendous piece of haute horology for a fraction of the price. And I would go further and say this: its much less of a ripoff of the Royal Oak than the Panomatic is of the Lange 1. Oh and by the way, I own a Panoreserve and love the sh*t out of it, despite the fact that I admit to a bit of shame at having the "poor man's" version of another watch.
From my understanding Glashutte and Lange and son wear one company and they split in times of Berlin Wall broke them up to two company ,from my understanding what I was told
I feel younger guys or younger taste tend towards the Sub while older guys or older taste enjoy the DJ. I wanted a DJ since I was a little kid. I loved that old guy taste of getting dressed up and having a DJ on the wrist.
I didn't realise this until recently, but the screw crown down on a Rolex isn't used for waterproofing. It's just to guard against the user accidentally popping the crown out and damaging it. The seals provide the water proofing, the threads used on all Rolex crowns don't offer any waterproofing properties at all
Not correct. Screwing the crown down compresses the seals in place as part of the triplock waterproofing system. “As part of his Oyster Case Design, Hans Wilsdorf also patented the screw-in crown. The advantage of the screw in crown is the ability for it to seal against a rubber gasket. Although some crowns already possessed some type of rubber seal, the combination of a threaded stem compressing against a rubber o-ring made the seal much more water tight. Rolex utilizes the closing of a submarine hatch as a metaphor for describing how the threaded crown works.”
@@strapped2time The modern Rolex crown design is completely different. Take a look at the Rolex crown patents for the modern sports watches or any contemporary screw down crown design for that matter. A crown's compression has the potential to be under or over tightened by the user. The master gasket, which is responsible for the primary IP rating of a watch/Rolex, does not rely on the crown thread compression force at all.
The problem is people buy what others will appreciate. I have one GO in my collection and it's my favourite piece. It is way nicer than Rolex in terms of finishing quality, and movement.

Presenting watches in pyjamas ?🤔😂
Ahah I had the same thought, was searching for this comment 👏😂
Hodinkee article 2015. I have the GO Sea q. Panorama date 43. Immense watch high homology. The history is widely available but Hidinkee nails it
In regards to GO, I have been staring at the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date for quite awhile - it just keeps beckoning me to the rocks like a siren...
When it comes to German watches have a look at Dornbluth & Sohn, in an age when high end watches are made by computers and then put together by a person, these are genuinely hand made by artisans in house. Incredible value and the history is fascinating.
best watches under $10,000
I second this - Dornbluth and Sohne make some exceptional watches, not just for the price point, but overall.
It's not a Lange rip off it's the original...
Op, Explorer and datejust are the best rolexes. Depending if you want something more casual, sporty or dressy you buy one or the other.
The next level of the datejust is the day date with the president bracelet but It has a differenti price point
Oyster pep supremacy
That and our love for watches are probably the only thing we have in common. ;-)
Why buy if you don't have the money?
@@stevenjm12 Who says I don't have the money? Who decides whether or not I have enough money to spend on a watch? You?
@@mrdisco99 you said in the post you dont have the $$$
@@stevenjm12 I said I don't have mad money... meaning I don't have the money for just ANY Rolex... but I appreciate your contribution because it illustrates one of the problems I have with the Rolex "enthusiast" community and how they think they know enough to gatekeep potential buyers who they deem not financially qualified to buy one. It's just another form of snobbery that turns me off the brand.
@@mrdisco99 you are very much projecting, sir
Those hands on the watch that was gifted to Churchill are so cool for a Rolex Datejust.
The Explorer is an OP with a different dial. Different clasp, sure, but otherwise fundamentally the same watch
No rolex is hand made and assembled and its a charity trust foundation! No watch company has this privilege

About your comment of them being original, that’s exactly what they tried to do because they are the successors of GUB.
I just got my DJ rose gold, fluted jubilee with a Wimbledon dial! I love it
Nice pijama Christian!
You'd think he'take the time to get dressed to do a video.
The 41mm datejust with mint green dial is stunning.
@Christian, Datejust 36mm or 41mm?
Heinz W. Pfeifer founded Glashütte Original in 1994. One of the youngest watch companies in Europe.
I was fortunate to get both me and the wife black datejusts 31 and 36 mm on the same day in dubai
Just found your channel today and LOVE it! Just curious about why the channel is "Theo and Harris" but you are actually Christian and Michael?
I found a shop on gold row in Florence selling a GO panolunnar for about 9k, at that point it's value is simply unparalleled.
The worst ROLEX you can buy is one your head and heart hate, but someone is pressuring to buy it!
Great show guys!! What model or size was your AP? Is there a video about it?
The Explorer is the epitome of a Rolex sports watch. The DJ is more of a dressier piece. You forgot Blade runner when talking about Harrison 😎
This is so sad. These two watch personalities don’t know the history of Germany before 1950
They're named after a location and called original because they were the original!
Hate fluted bezels... one of the reasons I held off buying one..
Glashutte Original is very fitting for the brand's name, only when you read their true history, not the stuff on the website.
How much of this piece was a out Rolex, which is the title?
Thank the heavens, theo and harris watchsop has a curator!
I think the Datejust was better in the older models before the polished bracelet and case.
I appreciate the history lesson on the Datejust as I didn’t know much about it and an incredible insight.
Glashutte and that valley was in Cccp hands until like the fall of the Berlin wall. Nomos was started i. 1992 I believe although that valley was making watches since the beginning. The Us bombed the civilian population of Dresden during the War so much that there is still bad blood towards us in that area.
“People are to caught up in there bullshit.” 💯👌Love it haha
Little known fact: The Dalai Lama had an uncredited role as 'tabloid press reporter no4' in Spice World the movie.
i love you so much! for me you are hands down the best watch channel on youtube. Iam supporting you from Germany. Tanti saluti e un abbraccio.
I would also go as far to say thr Explorer, in the same size as a Datejust, is also considered equal or more entry level as it is cheaper in price.
The Datejust is 100% THE iconic Rolex. Period.
As opposed to not period?
Its funny because Ive always felt the same EXACT way about GO as Michael does. Absolutely LOVE the brand and will still buy one but I completely agree on the name thing.
GO is the Original.
Brooks Brothers Pajama top Christian? Looks good
Hot take: I far prefer the Panomatic Lunar's dial to the Lange 1's dial. Something about the way the small seconds subdial on the Lange is tangent to the main dial bothers me. The Panomatic's subdial placement seems just more visually satisfying. GO's problem is that it is essentially the surviving company of the old GUB state-owned watch factory.
The GO is the Original.
Glashutte Original - too broad, lack of presence, location-based.
Universal Geneve - ?
One is about a town in Germany, the other highlights the intergalactic ambitions of the Swiss empire!
Just put myself on the list for the 36mm Green, Mint dial datejust. Can’t go wrong
On the topic of a date just, I’m split. I have a place in my heart for a vintage one but going from 36 to 41mm, it annoys me the date just doesn’t have an in between .
the DJ41 is 39,5mm
In some ways the GO is better executed than the Lange 1. For example, just look at the date wheels on both. The ALS date wheels are on different planes where the GO is on the same and looks a lot cleaner.
PS, I love ALS.
For amazing value in solid Rose Gold… the IWC UTC Antoine De Saint Exupery 44mm … picked up for sub-€10k in the second hand market. A stunning watch
You’re planning on getting killed in that watch!!😂😂 I almost fell on the floor!! 👍👍
there is a reason why GO designs look like lange. I wont spoil you, go chech it out. i was expecting michael at least to be better informed on this matter.
Going to show her the video now !
Where can I find a nubuck alligator watch strap like the one from Glashütte Original? Any suggestions?
I don’t get the idea of name of the brand being after a place. In the Uk a lot of things are at least styles of things. Chesterfield Sofas, Derby shoes, Harris tweed and lots more
Genesis example with Rolex is perfect
Most expensive Homages ever made. LOL
I agree with Michael, I also get hung up on GO's name
It’s hard to explain the brand story because Glashutte Original was the same company as A Lange Shone. All watchmakers in Glasuhutte were nationalized into one company. An example of Eastern Germany’s communist past. So it’s an interesting story but told terribly. So GO is not a copy of ALS.
Lange and GO were one company. Also GO quality is better than Rolax. GO are hand finished.
The issue of GO is that they don t have unique design watch. Lack of flagship, l1xk of identity
amzwatch has set a new standard for replica watches. Their craftsmanship is impeccable. Its hard to tell the difference from the originals
Why are they in pyjamas?
Zero interest in German watches beyond the Sinn price point.
From my understanding Glashutte and Lange and son wear one company and they split in times of Berlin Wall broke them up to two company ,from my understanding what I was told
Love the datejust. My most favorite of them all and my very first purchase.
Is the cyclops for people who only have one eye...because it has sold extremely well.
I feel younger guys or younger taste tend towards the Sub while older guys or older taste enjoy the DJ. I wanted a DJ since I was a little kid. I loved that old guy taste of getting dressed up and having a DJ on the wrist.
I'd go for the IWC Portuguese before that Glashutte.
Op is THE real rolex
The problem is people buy what others will appreciate. I have one GO in my collection and it's my favourite piece. It is way nicer than Rolex in terms of finishing quality, and movement.
Wow urs a real NY Italian..he said decheco pasta ..living in Florida watching this . Just made me miss home ... best pasta i get here is barrilla
That was a good Rolex rant
