    Where do I begin with this one.... Absolutely giant piece of furniture and the most money I have ever spent on a project! Took over a week to restore but the results are absolutely amazing !

    I love the contrast between them! I visited many artist's schools and almost all of them had these. I guess they're convenient to store new paper and students' finished work :D

    I think you made the right choice by staining the drawers a lighter color. The contrast made this piece really pop!

    I’m in the civil engineering/land surveying field and we call those plan cabinets and kept our large scale maps in the drawers. You did a beautiful restoration on that cabinet!

      I live in Australia and way back in the 70s I worked in a drafting office and we called them plan cabinets, too.

      As incredible as it may seem, this type of furniture is also widely used in museums. At the Bahia Clothing Museum (Brazil), the pieces from the technical reserve are kept in furniture similar to this one. I remember when I saw a set of stoles and cassocks from the 18th century preserved in the collection, and to be stored they are placed in drawers of that style so that there are no creases or fold marks on the pieces.

    Cherry veneer with plum stain turned out quite lovely. The hardware makes it sing!

    That was a MONSTER project! I love the cherry veneer and the contrasting colors on the drawers! It came out beautifully! The cats definitely earned their snacks on this one. They are wonderful supervisors!!!

    THATS THE ONE! Absolute perfection. I’ve always known these to be called ‘plan chests’ and in the 70s and 80s every architect, art studio, ad agency etc… had them. They are worth an absolute fortune so whatever you spent on the restoration was worth it. So incredibly beautiful. I’m very jealous.

      My late father was a structural engineer and he had one of these monsters for his drawings! Lovely restoration.

    That was an expensive redo... but it also looks like an expensive piece now. Love it. I enjoy the 2 tone look, and the plum mahogany is my favorite color. Another fabulous job done!!!!😊❤

    These units are also called flat files, and I use them for unframed artwork, mat board, and anything else that is better flat than standing. I love your color choices and attention to detail ... and the drawer pulls. Everything works together perfectly. 👍

      Yep. I worked at Print shop and we called these flat files. We put proofing materials and old proofs in there. Still use them, but they are metal.

      Yes, they are flat files. A company I used to work for sold these. Most that we sold were metal and not wood based.

    That is a planners blueprint drawer. My grandfather at one time at work had one! If this is for you, then make it like you want!

      There have been and still a number of different fields that use this storage cabinets. Their (non-field biased) name is Flat Files.

    Its enormous!!! I dont know what you plan to use it for but it IS beautiful! I love how you used the various colors of wood to their benefit to make the piece a definate stand out! Its gorgeous!

    Amazing transformation!! You did an awesome job!! 👏👏 I think you made the right decision to not stain the drawers. $650 is a steal for an architect’s cabinet! I’ve been wanting one for years and can’t find one that is made this well for an affordable price.

    Great result, the contrasting colours are really pretty! This probably would have been an even greater pain in the peach if the base was in one piece. These kind of cabinets would also have been used in museums to store artworks on paper.

    Hi Carel, love the new intro. Wow, $500! That’s a lot to start off from scratch! But you’ll make it wonderful. I sure hope you have a really good use for it! I can’t imagine working in such a confined space. You really are patient! My hubby would have been swearing and given up ages ago…Nah, he would never even have started on it! But you won out in the end…and it looks truly beautiful! Good on you for keeping it! So you should, too! You’d never get the money back for all you spent on it, time and money-wise. You are allowed to keep some of the work you do after all. 😊❤️🦘🇦🇺

    Oh my goodness, Jay, you’ve outdone yourself! That is just beautiful! I was kind of rooting for the Jacobean stain, but the mahogany turned out great. As soon as you put the drawers in, I said aloud, “Ooh, leave them natural!” I’m so glad you did! I love the touch of gilding wax too. You truly did an amazing job. 😊

    I’m a graphic designer in the US. We call that piece of furniture “flat files”. We used to store printed pieces, printer proofs and art in them before the industry went digital. Love the linear quality and the color blocking!

    I'm an architect. One of the most common sizes for drawings in the US is 36 x 48 inches. That requires big drawers exactly like the drawers you have here. One office I worked in had a special 36 x 60 inch drawer for a special project that was long and narrow, requiring a 60 inch sheet size.

    Really nifty drawer handles. I sometimes have issues with handles that aren’t finger-friendly and these clearly pass! You have good judgment on the finishes and this turned out perfectly stunning.

I also love how you embraced your kitty inspectors…and it makes it even more amazing that they are not your cats! Maine Coon cats (which they seem to be), love to be a part of whatever you are doing. While we were renovating our house, our Maine coon kitty would totally have to watch everything…and then have to go through every square inch when we stopped working!

    I love how this turned out. For me, due to the colors in my home, I probably would've stained it Walnut or Jacobean. I love that you didn't stain the drawers. The contrast is gorgeous!
