Amazing repair and restoration of these old plan/map drawers

- These old incomplete architects plan drawers were purchased for $50. The seller believed they had originally been used in city council offices or a library. They are made from Rimu, a New Zealand native timber. As they were originally made in a rudimentary way I have tried to keep this in mind with the restoration process. With 2 drawers completely missing I used the remaining drawer bases to construct new parts. Although I was unable to accurately date this piece I was able to confirm the original handles were at least 70 years old.

Very nice work!! This is a real "charm" of a piece here. It's great to be able to save nice furniture like this. It certainly adds value to this item. We need more people like you. The saw mills need to stop killing off too many trees.
Thanks for watching and the kind words

Impressive. Just subscribed
Much appreciated!
Great restoration, lovely end result ❤
I have a similar cabinet, I use it to store part of my collection in.
Thank you for watching
Beautiful! ❤
Thank you! 😊
I like how you sacrificed the drawer bottoms to make new drawers. Better to have the part you see be original wood than to make the drawer itself out of new wood. But it did confuse me for a bit until i saw the before and after at the end and realized what you did.
Thankyou, I agonised about calving up the draws and adding ply but thought it was the best way forward.
excellent
Many many thanks
Absolutely gorgeous and amazing job🎉

Can I ask what you do with the restored pieces when finished, i. e. is there somewhere we can buy them?
Thanks for watching. Most projects end up on trademe in New Zealand. It’s hard though because my wife seems to want most of them when they are finished lol
goog job

@@truetinyresto Long Tall Glasses - Leo Sayer 😊
I ❤ It 😍🥰💯👍🏼👍🏼
Thankyou for watching
Bellissimo lavoro ma molto impenativo praticamente hai dovuto cambiare quasi tutto il legno.. Complimenti perché il risultato. finale è davvero magnifico
Thankyou so much for watching
So, wait. Maybe I missed something. Did you actually cut off a split board end and scarf on a new piece of wood instead of just gluing the split? Not a criticism, I just wouldn't have thought to do that.
Also, please please PLEASE God don't do the POV: headin' toward the whirling sawblade camera trick again. 😅
New subscriber! Love your work!
Thanks for watching. That part of the board was full of Bora (woodworm) so it was very weak and crumbly. lol, glad you liked the extreme POV
@@truetinyresto Got it, wondered if it was something like that. Don't change a thing, man (well except the blade POV lol). I watch every furniture resto channel there is and you're unique. You do things in a slightly odd, almost insouciant way. I keep finding myself going, "What the fuck ... Why is he doing it like that?? The hell is wrong with you, sanding the dowel before the glue is dry ..." But it turns out great. 😂
Just goes to show, many roads to the top of the mountain. Thanks for your awesome work!
Stunning. Man, flathead screws drive me up the wall, just did a whole 1940's kitchen door set full of them 😮💨😅 Also where do you get those wax sticks?
Thanks. I’m in New Zealand and get them locally but you can get them here on Amazon www.amazon.com/Furniture-Repair-Crayon-Restore-Scratch/dp/B08FLZXKBZ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=2UV2XPL22HE74&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.U2pbKdXB29LUmPtnsXyuHJmi9s0APi_RMZfUG5VXN-U8LPDkBXbxZPE_xJhSOv64Qh84HMXI-YbP3O-4qGUevY7WtckLA2okzCRbGUPRrBlpfSWQ1UnoIYAfbECGNMIVRbMHwd3l14vdk92DWi--Y0DkR1YkWIVQG6irNpRGzdq6hbYgs62Kz-vX9eMqSUhOBu_dJZEjyqTmuAtOSZ2inQ.m6N-OUywld5o14XtA35CKcJs59AIzC_ss_7WIBY_W8E&dib_tag=se&keywords=wax+repair+sticks&qid=1721792113&sprefix=wax+repair%2Caps%2C345&sr=8-3
@@truetinyresto Thank you
About 3 years ago, I quit derusting & saving them because my "collection" had gotten rather large. Not sure how many I've used over the years restoring old furniture, but I should have enough for the rest of my life. They just look right in old furniture.
I am suffering from equipment envy here. Do you find the Ryobi planer to be a sound piece of equipment. I have the scroll saw and am disappointed with a few of the features especially the u shaped piece used to hold down the wood. It appears twisted and does not hold thin pieces of soft wood at all. Just wondering if the brand has problems with other tools. 😮
The Ryobi planer is about 16 years old, it’s only really been used for hobby stuff. Most of my tools are used for my day job so that’s why they are higher end brands like Milwaukee, Festool etc but I did have many Ryobi hand power tools for more than 10 years and they all performed well.
I’m so confused what he did like what was old and what was new wood but it still looks awesome!
The original drawers had 2 of the 4 draws missing. I repaired the existing 2 draws and manufactured 2 new drawers. Thanks for watching
@@truetinyresto OH OK! 🤦♂️ it did not click in my head when I saw the drawers missing lol. Also what was that wood from was it wood you just had in your shop that you took apart from other things and repurposed because if it was that’s awesome too!
I took apart the existing drawer bases and this gave me enough timber to make the sides and backs of the new drawers however the new drawer fronts were made from some other reclaimed stock. All the timber is Rimu, A New Zealand native species.
@@truetinyresto oh wow that’s really cool! I’ve seen people use table leaves to make table legs and other stuff like that but what you did was very cool!
