- James Lough is the former director of the writing program at the Savannah College of Art and Design, where he currently teaches full-time. His book "Sites of Insight" won the Colorado Endowment of Humanities Award. He is also the winner of the Frank Waters Southwestern Writing Award for short fiction and has published more than 80 articles, short stories, and book reviews. He lives in Savannah, Georgia. His book This Ain't No Holiday Inn: Down and Out at the Chelsea Hotel 1980-1995 explores the lives of Bohemian artists before Bohemians became an endangered species.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. i genuinely belive i was a bohemian in my past life. i’m a 15 year old girl from london and i’m so obsessed with the bohemian culture and i really want to live a lifestyle simular to that however when i try to talk about this subject with my friends or family they laugh at me because it’s “unrealistic” and i just really want to find some like minded people.
it all starts with a dream ~ don't betray your desire ~ it is easier to say 'it will never work', however you are young and you have time ~ start the process ~ baby steps ~ and don't forget your (not your parents goal, not your friends goal) YOUR goal. Enjoy the process.
You can do it ! Becoming anything can be difficult.

I want to live in a national park for artists
Lets do it... Most say this, but never do.
If you travel through the country you will see small towns that have been all but abandoned. Entire little towns- empty buildings and empty streets. I went through one on my boat travels- nice little town on the water and not far from the ocean. A three square block of a town- cool buildiings coming straight out of the little harbor up the little street with fairly large two story buildings and storefronts on street. It was a ghost town. A highway was built that by passed it and essentially cut it off and the business moved to strip malls alongside the new highway.But what an amazing opportunity for an entire little town to be an artist colony. A respite from the cities or a permanent spot. Sadly all it takes is money and people willing to support the arts- two things that seemingly don't go together. I shake my head at the billlions spent on sports stadiums- which is fine- it just seems a shame we don't spend a tiny fraction on something that may produce another Scheile- DaVinci or Rothko. What a shame we are squandering this immense wealth on transient and throw away.
I love this video James. You are so fluid and energetic. The subject matter is close to my heart, as I'm sure it is to so many like minded people. Long Live The Arts!
Wonderful man! Artists make greater art by collaboration and being inspired by one another. I wonder which will be the next artist hot spot that will be taken away by rich people once more.
Perhaps the trick is to inspire a rich person to help with funding. Get out there and make it happen. Trade art for space, offer classes, get a group together ~ a think tank, "rich" people can help! Negativity stops the flow of creativity. Maybe turn your thinking around.

We are here (Bohemians). A lot of u do not have the cash to live there. I would give my left arm to live there
I assure you Bohemians are not endangered, they are ubiquitous among universities and youth cultures, though many of them are false-bohemia, like the hipsters who are merely aesthetically lead, it;s rather superficial with them, but there are many musicians, writers and artistic explorers knocking around.

As with any counter culture most likely had a genuine start- I suppose this is why the word "poser" is used.I ran into a young 20 yo- he was all punked out- leather-studs-punk shirt from old punk band- pegged pants- but all of it tight and clean. As a punk from the 80's I struck up a convo with him. He eventually looked at me and said "its just a look man" how disappointing.Just enough to pull off the look- but mainstream to still be accepted in the norm- no counter culture there.
jackchorn Yea I did mention the "look" but I assure you there are many individuals who follow a certain outlook to life, a sort of liberal, exploratory, creative outlook, a sort of new-hippy, beat-backlash. And I say that empirically since I'm quite rooted within that culture, but having said that I do live a particularly liberal county, in fact we were one of the only three areas in te UK to have voted liberal democrats, so that might be a factor in my experience.
While I agree universities are filled with hipster poseurs, you might be kind of missing the point of Bohemians when you say "merely aesthetically lead". Terence McKenna has some of the best ideas I've heard on the importance of aesthetics.

a problem is that our increasingly conservative culture has stopped valuing bohemian liberalism and mainly values 'bobo aesthetics' which give the appearance of edgy change while coming mainly from the well to do artists and institutions. I realize it's a blurry distinction but one that's mostly true when you see most non commercial oriented artists getting pushed out of huge cultural hubs.

Bohemia is part of the Czech Republic. It is not in Romania. I'm trying to learn more about Bohemia because family history and it's so confusing because all I can find is videos taking about "bohemian" as a style or synonym for artist, not as a people who actually lived in the area of what used to be Bohemia. Am I missing something here?

I don't have an answer either. This is 9years old and it's more relevant than ever. My bohemian friends can't afford hardly anything, yet they sacrifice everything to make art: financial stability, a solid living situation and proximity to fellow artists
the romani came to bohemia and had some caravans there. the vast majority of bohemians were not gypsies. Bohemia is the westernmost and largest historical region of the Czech lands, where my family migrated from. and the romani have very little to do with bohemian culture. modern day flower children just adopted some "gypsy culture" and call it bohemian style.
Bohemia is in the Czech Republic not Romania.

They were called Bohemians in Paris because they lived in the same slums where the Gypsies lived and the French believed that the Gypsies originated from "Bohemia".

I lived in Savannah & it is not cheap & unless you are part of the SCAD "Art" scene being a very exclusive scene at that, any creative endeavor wil bet met with scrutiny judged. & if you don't drink, social scene in Savannah you are screwed.
May I ask what is a bohemian lifestyle? I an completely unaware of this being a thing I just found this video while searching up stuff about Bohemia.

What artists need is a UBI (Universal Basic Income).
The old way of living the artists lifestyle is not really workable anymore. I'm an artist from a family of artists who grew up around nothing but artists, so I know what I'm talking about.
A UBI would give artists a small income they can use to stay alive while they create.
I used to think RUclips & the Internet could be that help artists need but the payment schemes are to convoluted & haphazard.
Lough makes a huge mistake. He believes that the Place makes the Artist, when it is the Artist that makes the Place.
It isn't Gentrification that is ruining art at all. Granted there are thousands of people who wasted their parents money (or went into debt) for a degree in art who would love for Lough to find some sort of corporate sponsor to subsidize their rent in an urban loft so they can crochet cat ears to sell on Etsy. And that is what these sorts of initiatives always result in. We have to remind people that Max Beckmann made some of his best work while hiding from the Nazi's in a candle lite basement.
We live in an age consumed by academic art, art taught in schools, prescribed and canonized by Post Modernist theory. Much like the academic system of the 19th century that shunned Van Gogh, in favor of art approved by the galleries and easily judged with a check list by critiques. The great art of our current age lies in an attic or basement somewhere, and has no relation to any of the social causes and isms (socialism, feminism, gender studies, anti-colonialism, what-have-you etc) that our academic art dictates, to be discovered by a generation not yet born and removed from the BS of our current age.

I can tell that you're either not an artist (or not a serious one) with your crack about getting subsidized to crochet cat ears to sell on Etsy.
Making a living AS an artist is harder now than ever before. I know this first hand. Also people I graduated with many years ago are struggling harder than you can imagine.
It's also harder to do the BS day job/ Art at Night thing. Day jobs somehow pay FAR worse than they used to, which is quite an accomplishment. Rents, utilities are FAR higher than they used to be. So it leaves very little (if any) surplus income and no real time to do anything. Art isn't like working down at the bank.
What really is needed is a UBI, so artists can go off and do their thing without wasting all that time scratching to get by because that doesn't really work anymore.
The same thing is happening in London in Soho and St Giles in front of our very eyes. You mention Savanah Nashville and Berkeley/Oakland as if they are small towns. They are not and real artists neither need nor want your help, but, they are congragrating in certain small towns - populatiion under 2000.

Second: don't Bohemians live a Nomadic/Vagabond/Gypsy lifestyle? Bohemians are notorious for traveling and spending only a few years in select cities. I dont think they would be too thrilled at living in the "National parks for Artist"
