Thank you for chattering alone while driving and looking around places in my home country. It was entertaining and a kind of sad to hear it at the same time. 🙄😁 The autumn is not the best time to ride in Finland. The weather here is quite unpredictable and there are no many other riders on the move as you noticed. And definitely not many nice coffee places open any more. Welcome again during our beautiful summer time. 🙋♂
Happy day and welcome to Finland. The ferry looked pretty abandoned. Now, some advice in Finland. The Finnish speeding tickets are not based on the actual speeding but it is based on income for the day. Usually half of the income you have on the day of the speeding. The lowest fine in Finland is Euro 6, and the highest is euro 200. Norway has also an income based speeding ticket but it is waaaaaayyy more. Now, the speeding cameras in Finland is different from the ones in Sweden. Not only in looks, but also they you dont have to be identified for a ticket to be sent out, the owner of the vehicle will get the ticket, and they have to figure out who was driving to pass on the ticket. In Finland, especially in road works, there might be (often in vans), a speeding camera that takes pictures from behind. Be careful speeding in road work zones or if you just pass a van parked on one of them side parking along the road. They dont have to have your face for identification, just the plate. Now in Sweden it is different, first, in Sweden the cameras only take front pictures. Driving bikes from a European country, we dont have front plates. To my knowledge only bikes from India and Indonesia have that. But also, you need to be identified. Kind of hard with a helmet. But lets say you drive a car and you are not fully visable, then they cant send a ticket because your identity need to match the picture of the photo of your license or passport, or family members of the owner of the car. Most of the cars you seen in that car graveyard were Saabs with a few exceptions. The white car with smashed turn signals was a Saab 900. I dont know what your route is after Finland but I have a suggestion for you unless you plan to go to Estonia. Go to the Finnish city of Åbo/Turku, reason for 2 names is that Åbo is the name in Swedish Language while Turku is the Finnish language. The area have a large Swedish speaking population. From there, take the ferry to the small island nation of Åland Islands, the capital and where the ferry goes is called Mariehamn (means Marie Harbor). Åland Island is its own nation with free association with Finland. Kind of like how Cook Islands is with New Zealand. The Aalander has their own laws, although Finland is part of EU, Aaland Islands are not. Basically the only thing Finish there is that they have Finish passports. The rest is autonomious. That will give you a new country on your list. Furthermore, worth to check into. Usually, to take a ferry from Åbo to Mariehamn, then to Stockholm, or even better, Grisslehamn, is often cheaper than taking the ferry all the way from Åbo to Stockholm. This may have change since I took those routes, but worth checking into. Also, Åland Island is a very nice place.
Those cars are all from the people who stayed the night and never came back😩😩 Skelingtons were probably in that timber shed. Could have peeped in and seen them dancing with each other🫣 You were very lucky to get out😂😂
Remember to say the name of towns you are passing or stopping. Roadsigns with name of the places are nice to catch on video. You are amazing to follow, so keep it up and stay safe.❤
Cool videos Liz, good to watch. Scetchy wet metal ferry ramps are always a pleasure hahaha. I know what you mean when some times it can get lonely but always a great experience at the end, also low coffee levels never help haha. Think i rode passed you quite a while ago near cheddar gorge, i reackonise your bike i think.
Finding coffee became a top priority when I started heading east - before this trip I hated the stuff! Now I’m home and weaning myself back off it so it doesn’t become an expensive problem. You probably did! I am in that area a lot and I’m not sure there’s many bright pink RRs about…
Haha one of lifes great pleasures is coffee, and certainly helps on long days. I take my own on tour to help keep the cost down. I nice coffee sitting at the top of a mountain pass enjoying a great view is always nice, easily can get expensive though. Thats cool, i live in shaftesbury dorset so around that area a bit, if i spot you again ill wave or stop and say hello. Keep up the cool videos and fun trips.
Yay yay great! nice chatterbox came to Finland. This fall autumn was unusually colorful in southern Finland. The big rocks are boulders from the end of the ice age.. transported by the glacier. Small villages are "dead" when there are not many inhabitants, there are also lively small villages, but more so in the summer. Big respect to you, you are visiting Finland :) really a lot of nice winding country roads, asphalt but with a suitable bike there are dirt roads available. (I apologize for using a translator) 🤭I like you👍
Yes! Finally Finland! I was so happy to be able to go even for a short while. I’ll definitely be back. I liked the ‘dead’ villages - but I did miss the coffee shops and places to warm up. Summer will be more fun, but I am glad I came to see the autumn colours.
Honest. It's not all blue skies and unicorns on a road trip...but seeing either one doesn't half lift ones spirits. The BMW Navigator doesn't seem to be up to the job, which does not help your spirits either. Epic stuff Liz.
The hang wasn't good, but if I'm to be a bit more serious than in my earlier comment about BMW using the same navigation as on their adventure bikes I think the reason for the car park detour is pretty simple. The navigation wasn't entirely wrong when checking a map. It should've been the third exit ("left turn"), and then the first exit ("right turn") in the next roundabout which it showed correctly. The first roundabout is pretty new and to start with the first/right exit was closed off. I would guess BMW Motorrad is using Here (BMW is one of the owners) and if I check Here WeGo on my phone it doesn't show the first/right exit yet, so the navigation probably wasn't wrong given the information it had. But I have to say that I do not like navigation in roundabouts at all because of their "take the n:th exit" which is not how I mentally picture a roundabout. In most cases it just makes things more confusing that neccesary. I've seen other similar roundabout mishaps to the car park in Liz's videos and sometimes you can even see what's going on if you look closely at the screen and read all the text and comparing to road signs. But it's one thing doing that when you can pause a video and another when driving at the same time... Since there's no actual map on the screen you lose the context as well and just see what it expects you to do in x metres.
Was happy seeing my old home town - Vaasa. All Finnish towns and cities are really summer cities. And yes, you found an old elderly home to spend the night at 😅 Hope you'll have time to visit in the summer at some point.
Hi we are all bouncing into winter blues But with you could be turning towards home together of course a lack of coffee shops well the lack of anything doesn't help great vid none the less you and pinky ride safe
I loved Alta when I went to Norway last year, and I was so hoping to be able to go back but I left it too late this time. Really hope to be able to visit again on my next northern adventure.
The boarder patrol officer in Finland just waved you through cuz he'd heard about the crazy British woman riding in the artic cycle, in winter on a sports bike.🤣 Safe travels.
Hi Liz! 😍At least you got a roof over your head!... 😀The car that you looked at and that you said quote,..."that someone in England would absolutely like" end of quote!... Is a Swedish SAAB 900 coupe. (The white one) The one next to it, on the right in the picture and which seems to be a little light brown in color, is also a Swedish SAAB! Namely a SAAB 9000 sedan. BTW... Google Maps is much better than your BMW Navigator! Try it out and compare the wealth of maps and roads/cities and more.😉😊👍
Poor abandoned cars 🙁 they’d make some people very happy I’m sure. Yes, proper maps and satnav is better than the BMW system I’m using, but i prefer to keep my phone in my pocket and my dash clear of too many accessories, so I put up with the problems
Nice roads in the Nordic northern climate means roads which are practical considering the construction and maintenance requirements, which are different from places like the UK. The Nordic climate isn't very nice to road constructions and especially destructive for road surfaces. The need to use spiked tires in icy winter conditions wears out surfaces fast. With a low population density and long distances the equation of funding yearly road maintenance is difficult. But ice roads are significantly better than in the UK😊. Those happy "roads" in Finland are mostly unpaved nature paths, which are for pedestrians, cyclists and perhaps for snowmobiles. You don't ride the right type of vehicle for those paths.
I assume BMW uses the same navigation system on the GS series given where it took you... :) As said in other comments, that's a SAAB 900 of the original generation that was developed out of the 99. I think I've only driven one once, a pre-1989 with a carb and no servo.
@@R1_Liz The only time of a year that is more depressing than in this video is November. This time of the year is mentally hard even for Finns. I recommend coming back during summer. It's the polar opposite to this. It's also the only time of the year when there's any life in rural parts of Finland.
I have come to the conclusion that BMW connected ride sat nav is a piece of software that picks turns at random. The other day the route the app on my phone was showing different turns to those on the tft!
It absolutely does - I just followed my friend who was following her BMW navigation and it took us to the train station 2 towns over from where we were trying to end up 🤦♀️
You should continued going south in sweden and aimed at gothenburg and there jumped on a boat to England. This cant be fun for you. You are a real trapper to continue i must say.
There are no boats/ferries to England (or the UK at all for that matter) from Gothenburg and hasn't been for a long time. You'll have to go via mainland Europe in one way or another. The ones from Norway and Denmark are gone as well as far as I know. They lasted longer though.
@MrStonegrove okay,i dident know that. How ever ,the weather in balticum could be mutch harder i think, with bad roads and snow. Lets hope it works out find for our little traveler 👍
No boats north from England at all, but there’s a part of me that wishes I went south in Sweden, but I also think no matter what I did I’d be met with miserable weather due to the storm that had come in that week. And I’d been excited to do Finland for so long. I’m aware that I’ll just have to come back another time but for now I’m just pleased to have experienced the two countries even for just a little bit, in the miserable weather…
To add at least some context Finland was a part of Sweden for several hundred years, until 1810. That's why there are people primarily along some parts of the coast closest to Sweden, plus the semi-independent Åland islands, that speak Swedish (or Finnish Swedish/Finlandssvenska) as their first language. Do note that there's a marked difference between actual Finnish Swedish, which is slightly but not very different from modern Swedish, and Swedish with a Finnish accent. Actual Finnish is completely incomprehensible, since it as mentioned above belongs to another group of languages.
That’s horrifying to be honest 😬 this place was an ex- college - it didn’t feel particularly haunted, just creepy and empty, except for one little old Russian man boiling meat and making the whole place smell.

I hope happier days are ahead, I'm very jealous of your solo adventures and full of admiration. There is no way I could do it, I'd need company.
I felt quite lonely in Finland, until I got to the city but by then I’d decided to leave which is a shame. It was good to start seeing more bikes
I'm sure there are lots of people who would love to ride with you if you ever want the company on one of your trips.
When in finland you have to try suana´s now and then. It warm you up and it´s relaxing
I wish I had brought my bathing suit 🥲

It can be depressing in autumn when it's raining and cold, welcome in the summer. There are still biked riding today in Helsinki at least.
The speedcamera takes the picture of you and the front of your bike. They can't see your licence plate so you are not getting a ticket from Finland.
