The group around the Toripolliisi statue ( market square police) were probably freshmen of Oulu University and people with them in colourful overalls with patches were older students showing them the town and telling student habits and traditions.
And the student overalls are color coded. These guys are studying electrical engineering at University of Oulu. Mechanical engineers have black overalls, medical students have white, etc.

Great that you enjoyed my home city! "Toripolliisi" (with at least two l-letters in Oulu dialect) statue ("Market square policeman") was erected in the 1980's to guard over newly renovated square. It commemorates the policemen on duty at the square in 1934-79. Today the statue is an unofficial symbol of Oulu. Oulu ("Ou" rhymes with "oh", "lu" with "put") is a cycling capitol of Finland. When walking follow the signs or keep right.
Another ouluian here. it's indeed a great cycling city, which i recommend for touristst. you get to experience the city and outdoors way more. there is something like 1400km of cycling roads in the city, and the offroad paths are so much fun for a more adventurous cyclists, and you get to see the nature on those as well. cycling is a year round thing here, as the roads are well kept even during long months of harsh finnish winter.
It's funny how we get used to how stuff looks like at our home country and go "wow" when we see something different; I was amused as I was driving around in Nevada, California and Arizona and I had similar reaction to all the desert areas, odd looking little flat mountains and other stuff I never see here in Finland. Awesome that you found cool stuff too on your travels!
Yes, Finland is called "The Land of a Thousand Lakes", while Minnesota's nickname is "The Land of 10,000 lakes". This is a little backwards as there are roughly ten times as many lakes in Finland as in Minnesota. It also turns out that Minnesota( along with Michigan and Wisconsin)has one of the highest percentage of people with Finnish descent in the US, at roughly ten times the national average. Since the Northern part of the state is similar to Finland in many respects, this is not surprising. I was born in that part of the state and am of Finnish heritage.(In fact, my paternal Grandfather was born just 50 mi NE of Oulu, in Pudasjärvi)
I'm a finn and have distant blood-relatives in Thunder Bay, Canada. Probably the same, thinning bloodline. Might be a good thing as we die of heart disease.

Yeah, there was indeed a castle in Oulu once, but it was destroyed when the castle's powder cellar exploded in 1793. And as you saw, only the foundations are left of it. If you are planning another summer trip to Finland in the future, I warmly recommend the town of Savonlinna in Eastern Finland, where the medieval St. Olaf Castle (Olavinlinna) is located. This place is situated in the heart of the so-called Finnish Lakeland, where you can find lakes everywhere. And if you're lucky enough, you might catch a glimpse of one of the most endangered mammals in the world: the Saimaa ringed seal. 🦭
Glad you enjoyed your stay in Oulu. It's wild how fast the season changes towards winter. It's now cold, wet, and windy but it went below freezing last night. I live a few kilometers from the Oulu city center, yet I saw my first Northern lights of the season couple of nights ago from my own window ❤. The first ones of the winter are always special.

Oulu is nice place mostly. Not all parts of the city of course. We spend (with my ex) there over five months as my son was born almost four months too early at Oulu university hospital. He was born 740 grams (1,63 lbs) and was so small 25cm (0,82 feet). This summer he turned 16 and he is over 6 feet tall and weight is over 220 lbs. You should have visit northest beach in europe called Nallikari which is located in oulu, its very popular for norwegian tourists. Also place called ”Koitelin kosket” is one of the most beautiful places in northern finland and it is located maybe 20 kilometres from centrum.
So beautiful! It’s so different than in the winter. BTW, we’ve had the Northern Lights visible here in the Northeast for over a month now at least. I finally saw them for the first time ever. 😀💗
Thank you for visiting Oulu! We don't get a lot of tourists here, since almost everyone seems to ignore Oulu & just go up North to Lapland. I think we should somehow promote our city for tourists more, there are so many possibilities. Cycling infrastructure is world class, like Copenhagen or Amsterdam level. Also you can do water sports like SUP boarding or kayaking in the summer... in wintertime, maybe less things to do, but at least you could walk on ice at Nallikari beach :)

You should have walked a bit further from Pikisaari to see some prettier sea views, to Toppilansaari and Nallikari beach resort :) And then next to the cathedral there is a nice large Hupisaaret Islands city park area with many small islands and creeks, where you might even see some trouts. With a car you could drive to Koiteli rapids (30 mins drive), take a ferry to Hailuoto island (30 mins to the ferry and then another 30 min to Marjaniemi), or even to the Kalajoen Hiekkasärkät beach resort which could be called as the "Finnish Riviera" (1h 45min drive). Looking forward for your next adventures!
If you were wondering about the unfinished building near the market hall. I think some rich guy wanted to build a hotel there, but ran out of budget and now the building is in kind of a limbo. I think the city is waiting for someone to start rebuilding it, instead of demolishing it.

Western, eastern and northern Finland have nice and different nature and diffient things in general. Of course southern finland is more like capital area more global minded. And in very old area western finland southern ostrobotnia actually there are no lakes at all.

I have a good Finnish friend in Oulu. I was there last summer in June. He took me all over Finland and we met people we knew from the Twitch streaming community. I want to go back!! Trivia: Did you know there's place in Michigan in the UP named Suomi (Finland)?
Was about to say the same. You can see those fairly regularly in Oulu levels. You can see those in south Finland too. Helsinki is not very good place for those because of light pollution. So you see those just when those are really strong. But bit outside of Helsinki with less light pollution it's not uncommon. Several times a year and now when solar activity is on it's peak probably several times per month is very much possible, but unfortunately clouds often block the view.
Well about water, Finland is called "The Country of Thousands lake". And with thousands lake we mean, here we have more than 188,000 lakes. Also about bicycles in Oulu is, Oulu is known as bicycle capital of Nordic.
Those "tour guides" were students. You can tell from their white hats and overalls (blue university student = electrics). The folks without overalls were likely first year students who haven't yet gotten their overalls. Thanks for visiting, it is always interesting to see how people from elsewhere see these corners!
In 2:12 You saw finnish folkdance called Tanhu. Nowadays it's very rare to see. In the 60's and 70's It was very common tourist thing. Tanhu does not look at countrys borders. Western Finnish and Eastern Finnish folkdance cultures have a lot in common, even though the influences of one come from the western neighbor and the other from the eastern neighbor.
Always love seeing foreign tourists like Oulu! As for the Oulu Castle: The brick wall thing is part of the original medieval castle. Yes, there's been fires and such, but the big reason it's in ruins because it blew up. (long story short, incompetence from Russian soldiers.) The wooden tower is the original observatory built by University of Oulu. (They have a considerably more modern observatory at the Linnanmaa campus, I think. /mild sarcasm) Oh, and the cathedral isn't the only thing under renovation. Sooo many places have been unavailable this past year and a bit. Can't wait until the main library opens again.
The present-day ruins on the Linnansaari island remain from an even later castle, which was built in 1605 by order of King Charles IX. The king's power of attorney of April 8, 1605, first orders the construction of Kajaani Castle and then orders the rebuilding of Oulu Castle. According to the order, the old wooden structures had to be demolished and a rampart with fire shelters had to be built around the island. The castle was badly damaged in 1715, when Russian forces burned it during the Great Northern War. Final destruction of the castle took place on July 31, 1793, at 10:45 p.m., when lightning set the other one of the powder magazines on fire; as a result, the powder cellar exploded and destroyed the building almost completely. Wooden constructions on the remaining powder magazine date from 1875 when the Oulu School of Sea Captains built their observatory on the site. The building was designed by architect Wolmar Westling. The building has been a cafeteria since 1912 with a small exhibition on the castle history.
@@kognak6640 Aaah! I admit I was befuddled. I was thinking of Russians burning the wooden parts down in 1715 during the Great Northern War, so it was not an act of incompetence but actual dipshittery on the part of Russian soldiers. The explosion was indeed in 1793 due to a lightning strike, so no one's fault really (more of an engineering disaster, why the hell was anyone storing gunpowder unsafely to begin with.)
The Italica Taberna on the corner of the square, visible on 2:12, is a really good Italian restaurant. The statue got its name (Toripoliisi/market police) from the three market police officers who worked at the market between 1934 and 1979, who supervised order in the area. Toripoliisi was financed by a public collection started in 1985, which also sold postcards, small plaster sculptures and Antelli statue-themed gingerbread. The statue was unveiled in September 1987. Oulu is the bicycle capital of Finland. And all year round. ruclips.net/video/04US2_V4aTw/видео.html Finland, the land of thousands of lakes. It's funny that you mentioned Minnesota, because the Great Lakes region has traditionally been an area where American Finns have been abundant.
Wow that is sooo amazing! We are glad you finally got to see them! The solar storms have been so crazy lately😍
Lots of Norwegians come here every summer…
Great vlog! Could you please share which month you visited Finland and what the weather was like?
Thank you so much :) we were there in September and the weather was perfect, around 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit!
Excellent video about Oulu! You are very good at this whole video making business.
We really appreciate that. Thank you so much :)
You should go to Tampere!-It's surrounded by lakes there are very much to do there, see.....Great video, guys!
Tampere sucks it's a moron communist foolish neo marxist Lenin Capital of Finland.
We definitely will someday!! And thank you so much :)
I spent an Erasmus semester in Oulu, living in Tirolintie 2A. Trip down memory lane!
That is awesome! Thank you for your comment :)
Looks great!
It was a great time!!
Next time when u come to Oulu, check out Ainolan puisto since u like nature!
Going to Oulu this friday, got three bands to engineer.. But most likely not going to the city center at all this time.
That sounds awesome!! Thanks for watching :)
Hi Jacob and Jenny, so happy you guys are enjoying my Homeland. I live in Sydney Australia now. This is Not meant to be a criticism of you.. please don’t take this the wrong way. Finnish is a phonetic language, No silent sounds, no sing song pronunciations. Every letter is pronounced much like kids learn in Kindy.eg: OULU: O sounds like it does in when you say On ..U sounds like the Oo in LOOK. NOW TRY IT AGAIN.See? Simple.KOTI PIZZA: K,O( as in ON,T.. AS IN CAT, I As it sounds ( IN). The Z.. sounds like TS….Now you speak Finnish.CONGRATULATIONS. If you ever come to Sydney, I’ll be happy to teach you Aussie English. Enjoy your time in my old Home.👍
We do hope to come to Sydney very soon!! We appreciate the help friend :) thank you!!
Hi 💕Ookkona pelänny poliissia.Local thing... Nice to See that you 👩❤️👨enjoy 😍Greetings from J&E 💕
It is such a great place!! Thanks for watching :)
Jenny ❤️When you 2💕were near church and there was wedding, I little bit cry 🥲Have a nice stay In Oulu. How long you are💕 visiting In Finland? Have a good thursday and also weekend. I send to you hug 👩❤️👨🌻🌹🤗🍁
That is great to know!! Nallikari beach looks amazing. Thank you for your comment :)
If you were wondering about the unfinished building near the market hall. I think some rich guy wanted to build a hotel there, but ran out of budget and now the building is in kind of a limbo. I think the city is waiting for someone to start rebuilding it, instead of demolishing it.
Well, he’s the founder of Microcell and UROS. I think he owes 300 million euros and has multiple lawsuits awaiting in Finland and Switcherland... Well, according to the newspapers…
Wow that is so interesting!! Thank you for the information :)
My friend was playing the fiddle there.😊
@@KristinaWes yes👍🏻 typos are lovely.
That is so cool! He was great :) thanks for watching!
If you thought western Finland has a lot of lakes/water. Check out eastern Finland, the area called Lake Land(Järvi-Suomi) :)
Western, eastern and northern Finland have nice and different nature and diffient things in general. Of course southern finland is more like capital area more global minded. And in very old area western finland southern ostrobotnia actually there are no lakes at all.
@@gabrielgabriel5177 What are you on about. Southern Finland is not like capital area at all and not globally minded at all. :D Have you ever been past the third ring road of capital area?? :D
@@jakemaanimeikalainen248 i am from southern ostrobotnia. That is not southern finland nor even close to capital area.. Actually its definetly one of most traditional areas in the whole finland. By southern Finland i meant the area south of Hämeenlinna close to capital area. Yeah maybe there are also small towns that are not like Helsinki.
@@gabrielgabriel5177 No matter the definition of South-Finland all of Häme is always included.
@@jakemaanimeikalainen248 ah i did not know that. Well acutally i am living in tampere right now and this is totally different than my hometown. So much LGTB and rainbow propaganda here.
I have a good Finnish friend in Oulu. I was there last summer in June. He took me all over Finland and we met people we knew from the Twitch streaming community. I want to go back!! Trivia: Did you know there's place in Michigan in the UP named Suomi (Finland)?
Wow that is so fun!! We did not know that, so interesting! Thank you for sharing :)
@@JacobandJennyTravel And there’s also a county named Oulu in Wisconsin. I have distant relatives there.
This far south?! I see the northern lights in South-Finland around the year multiple times.
That is great to know :) thanks!
Always nice to stumble across a square. Gotta wait until nighttime for Taco Bell. Jenny is always right!
Hahaha ain't that the truth 🙌🏼😉
Nice, my home city ❤One thing you missed is Nallikari ocean beach ☺
It is such a great city! Thanks for the tip :)
That water is called Bothnian Bay, so it's not a river nor an ocean :P
Ahhh good to know! Haha thank you :)
MAN I WISH I LIVED THERE
It is a great place! Thanks for watching :)
@@JacobandJennyTravel how hard was it for you to move there or was u born there?
@@Holyorderofkeith_053They’re just happy travelers from Arizona, USA… I wouldn’t mind them living here, I like their attitude on life!
The castle was destroyed when lightning struck in the storage of gun powder. It started huge fire that destroyed most of the castle.
Hope you tried Soy Wrap in Hesburger, sooo nice, amazing flavours and texture. Yum!
Yum that sounds delicious!! We will have to try it :) thanks for the tip!
Aww, my hometown
It is amazing!! Thank you for watching :)
My hometown, welcome to Oulu.
Such a great place :)
"this far south" :D
If the context is Lapland / north Finland. Then it's kind of south point or starting point of that.
Hahaha!! 😂
Well about water, Finland is called "The Country of Thousands lake". And with thousands lake we mean, here we have more than 188,000 lakes. Also about bicycles in Oulu is, Oulu is known as bicycle capital of Nordic.
That makes sense!! Lots of water and lots of bikes haha! Thank you for your comment :)
Those "tour guides" were students. You can tell from their white hats and overalls (blue university student = electrics). The folks without overalls were likely first year students who haven't yet gotten their overalls.
Thanks for visiting, it is always interesting to see how people from elsewhere see these corners!
That is good to know! Thank you for the information :)
Go truyin east Finland,Joensuu and near City and willages!
Thank you so much for the suggestions :)
Minnesota is called a land of thousand lakes, Finland is called a land of 188 000 lakes!
And not coincidentally, most Finns who migrated to the US went to Minnesota and the upper part of Michigan since it's most like Finland.
Hahah love that!! Thanks for sharing 🌲
Wow so interesting!! Thank you for the information 🇫🇮
kotipitsa is the best 😍 but even tho its a chain, the quality varies between locations
We agree!! It is so delicious! 🍕
H&M are Swedish, so definitely popular in Europe.
That makes sense! Thanks for your comment :)
next time you should visit the Pancace House (Pannukakkutalo)
We will add it to our list!! Thank you for the recommendation :)
/mild sarcasm)
Oh, and the cathedral isn't the only thing under renovation. Sooo many places have been unavailable this past year and a bit. Can't wait until the main library opens again.
Incimpetese of Ruskies, no thing had changed In centuries🤣
Why there would be Russian soldiers in Oulu when the black powder cellar blew up in 1793?
The observatory was built in 1875, more than 80 years before the university was founded
yayyyy! ❤❤❤
♥️♥️
I also quess H&M is popular in Europe, mostly cos it´s Swedish company. :D
Right haha! Thanks for watching :)
Beautiful nature
It is gorgeous!! Thanks for watching :)

Finland, the land of thousands of lakes. It's funny that you mentioned Minnesota, because the Great Lakes region has traditionally been an area where American Finns have been abundant. In the United States, Michigan and Minnesota have been the most significant migration areas for Finns. There is even a town in Minnesota called Finland. Surprise.
But I still recommend visiting Hailuoto before you return the car, if you are still on your way.
Any chance you would be visiting also Kuopio? The heart od Savo area ♥
We aren't this time! We will put it on our list though :)
@@JacobandJennyTravel That would be great! Both, winter and summer are beautiful here, as in everywhere in Finland. But maybe I would recommend you to stop here on a summer visit. Beautiful town and so alive at summer! Loads of fun (and inexpensive) things to do! ☺
10:34 there's northern lights all over Finland, have seen many times at this year in SW Finland near Turku 😄

Yes, Finland is called a land of thousand lakes, but in reality we have ~ 170 000 lakes. Also the Finnish WRC rally used to be called "Thousand lake rally"
Wow so crazy!! 170,000 lakes! Thanks for watching :)

@@JacobandJennyTravelIt’s my home base and I always seem to be coming back. I lived in the US midwest for about 5 years and loved it there too. I drove my big Oldsmobile 98 to Florida, Louisiana, New York, and “everywhere “. I still miss that car, it was so reliable, fun and always ready to go. Of course in Finland everything is overtaxed and I drive a sensible BMW now. It doesn’t like me but complays about almost everything I do, even adjusting the seats. It’s a fine car but only as long as I obey it perfectly. Sorry for the rant.
You can't rent air bnb at Pikisaari all of those houses are privately owned and they're expensive as fuck, like 2 bedroom apartment there is 400K+.
Show the food! :O
Cafe's are always very expensive, just one coffee and a sweet costs as much as eating in a pizzeria or a buffet. Never going there myself because of it being so expensive. Too bad you couldn't get to experience the whole city

You should visit Oulu during winter: bitter cold, chilling wind and darkness and of course loads of snow.
Haha maybe we will someday 😂❄️
@@JacobandJennyTravelI suggest not to, unless you love snow and wind. I’m used to it, so I manage. Snow reflects light really well, so it’s not as dark as one might think.
