Great video Jeff. Congratulations on your new promotion! Great tips and they do work. You have been lucky with your manager. Not many are plus a size of organisations we work for also matters. Small to medium size organisations aren't as great as large ones when it comes to promotion processes in my experience. I would add gather feedback proactively from your colleagues, customers as you do all this work and share when relevant with your manager. What timing! Big thankyou . You are the angel i needed today. I had my job raise negotiation meeting today and i prepared a powerpoint and all that. This video gave me a boost in confidence and I was able to present it better and tweak my talking points with all additional tips in the video.. The boss matched my desired pay and said he was really impressed with the approach. I am ecstatic
Thanks Jeff ! This is golden advice ! Very few people are lucky to learn this early in their careers through a proactive approach and with an immense drive for career progression. No problem! It seems you might be a bit too senior to benefit from this video (😅), but yes I wish I was taught these concepts when I just started out as well!!
I work on cybersecurity industry. I simply need to work for a new company every year and get a big salary raise/better position with so many job opportunities.
So funnily enough my director told us that the reason he was able to move so quickly up the corporate ladder is that he switched careers a lot (then he told us not to do that 😂)
Ah, if I only cared about being promoted. I usually find that I am just there for the job and to do what I can, and then move on when it is time. I am really more one-on-one and advocate for the little person in the office, which generally doesn't cater well to moving up the ladder. I usually have the pattened footstool that I carry around with me as a reminder to not seek promotions. However, this advice is great for people who do and it also showed me why my boss struggled so hard before they let her go.
Hey to each his own right Matthew? 😁 But dam, sorry to hear about your ex-boss. Super curious - How does a footstool remind you not to seek promotions?
@@JeffSu Simple. We use the term "climb the ladder to success" far too often and think of these grandiose things we can scale (especially in the start-up world). A footstool is a handy prop when a manager is trying to motivate me to do more for free (much like today) by using the "climbing the ladder" trope. They make a very funny look when I slide it out in front of them and remind them that is my ladder and I am already on top. What can I say? I am not subtle when it comes to office politics. Why use tools when various sizes of hammers can do?
Same here 😂 I was passionate about overachieving when I joined the firm, now I just want to satisfy my responsibilities and don’t really care about promotions

Why do you think I have a RUclips channel :)
Keeping scores is essential and easy to do! After I am aware of what the annual review system looks like, I will keep a document of what I would achieve once we set the OKR. Usually there's not enough time for us to fill in the 360 reviews, and keeping scores saves me tons of time! Oh Happy 2023 Jeff
Exactly Beiyu! You don't want to be scrambling during performance review season and risk forgetting to input some important stats and results!
It’s all bullshit. If they want to promote you, they’ll promote you. If they don’t, they won’t.
Having said that, congratulations on getting promoted.
Haha thanks!
