I watched this a couple nights ago, gearing up for my first stain. Popped up again on RUclips so went at it again just to see what I might have missed. Saw your comment and thought, "wonder why he says that?" .......Then DAMN! He attacked that pour spout like he hated fingers." He's kind of hiding his left arm during the video....maybe he got one? Oops nevermind...he just pointed with it."
I used to do stuff like that. But, in a very similar act, the object let go, driving the point of the utility knife into a bone. One of the most painful, slowest healing, wounds I've ever experienced. Retracted blade--always when not immediately in use.
Oh brother! I made the mistake of buying one of those pump sprayers. The fan pattern was horrendous, the coverage was horrendous, the overspray was horrendous, the product waste was horrendous for semi transparent stain, with the 2 gallons of semi transparent that I wasted I could have bought an electric sprayer that atomizers the transparent paint better! I liked your video for the algorithm, I’m just leaving my comment here for other people to see. Whatever you do, for the love Of God, do not get this handheld pump paint sprayer! With the amount of product your waste, you will be able to purchase a high volume low pressure HVLP, or something much better to spray with! Oh my gosh I am still traumatized by this horrendous experience I went through this afternoon.
Wish I would've seen this comment before. On the plus side I tested it out with 1 gallon and immediately realized it was a waste. I spent $22 on the 5 gallon backpack sprayer from harbor freight. I should've read the comments first!
One question I have , did you have much over spray on the back side? I have a privacy fence with neighbors and I do not want to get the stain on their side of the fence.
For all the folks commenting on “why is mine clogging up my sprayer tip?” Note: The person in this video is using the product “Ready Seal” this product is much thinner than other products out there. Many other products out there easily clog sprayer tips.
Hey Naughty..., All I can think of is that it did not get fully mixed / shaken enough. I would shake it , stir it, and shake it again. If that still doesn’t do it, car paint stores sell paper filters/ strainers which might help by straining it as you pour it into the sprayer. Also, the nozzle might adjust - turn it and see if it opens up the nozzle a bit. Thanks for watching,
Good stuff! Ive got a 4 rail fence which I'm getting ready to stain, but I'm more than willing yo pay for easiest "best" stainer, so any recommendtaion on an electric one (perhaps cordless) - whatever is to make the job easiest?
We were considering budget 1st. I would look at various reviews and stars. Just make sure you mix the stain thoroughly because stain can have " solids " settle out at the bottom of the stain container. thx for watching!
Is November a good timing to stain a fence? I was planning to stain my fence this weekend. How long does it to for an oil solid stain to dry during this time of season?
Hey Let’s.... I’d guess temperature would be the deciding factor and that can vary widely in the USA. Probably should look at the temp range - should be listed on the can or online product specs. 50 degrees F is a common dividing line. I’d have no problem waiting till spring to stain as I’m in my yard way more in spring than winter. But that just personal preference. Hope your project goes well - thx for watching and commenting!!
@@Jesussaves869 This product, ReadySeal, can be applied it ANY temp, since it's oil based. Just make sure the wood is really dry (around 12%. You can get a wood moisture meter for about $15). WATER based stains probably need to be applied around 50F.
Hey user.., No problem but I had to keep the stain solids from settling. Keep shaking it. I’ve heard from other viewers they had issues. Something to be aware of at least. Thx for watching!
Did you have to add water to your stain. I tried a regular pump sprayer like you're using and it won't come out properly, it just dribbles out in a stream. I've pumped it like crazy, and have played with the spray setting, and it's all the same.
Hey Eric, I did not add water. I did vigorously shake the stain. It probably depends on how many solids are in your stain ( which give stain its color. ) Maybe a different nozzle? Or last try - try to enlarge the holes a small bit to encourage flow? Thx for watching!
I bought a sprayer like this that said it was for stain. I am using a valspar semi-transparent stain and it coming out thick and splotchy. Do you have to add water to thin out the paint?
Used a Wagner power paint roller on the outside of the fence and a Wagner HVLP sprayer on the inside due to the metal posts and stringers. The only issue was the power roller wouldn't cut off pressure due to the thin stain being pressed thru it. I fixed that issue with a cheap remote controlled power outlet to cut power on and off as I went along. Roller was tube fed and sprayer held about a quart. Enough to cover about 10 feet. This method does a great job of complete coverage between your pickets.
Hey Juan, If the if stain is water based , then water is fine to rinse out the sprayer. I would check stain manufacturer directions to be sure. Thx for watching!
Hey James, Might be a different stain? I know that the stain we used wanted to settle to the bottom of the bucket - so mixing was important. Thx for watching!
How many gallons did you use for your fence in total? I just started in my fence and used 5 gallons about 1/4 the way through my fence. Think I am doing something wrong as my fence is 1200sq feet.
Hey Bruce, We did it once a year later and some of the color settled to the bottom causing a clogging issue. Maybe call the stain manufacturer for tips??? Thx for watching!
Good video ;) Thx Next time use a roll instead of the brush, especially if you have loads of fencing to do. And if you got a solid color (usually thicker consistency) dilute it with 15-30% water if waterbased or turpentine if oilbased. It tends to spray more evenly.
In the south its peCan, soda is coke (“you want a coke? Ok what kind”?), and people aren’t grammar nazis - we share bbq and beer with anyone walking by
Cringing with that razor blade!!! Thanks for the vid; very helpful!!
I recommend a pump zero. It is a battery powered pump sprayer. No more manual pumping, constant 20psi no fluctuation of pressure at all
Have you tried staining using it? just curious how many more people have used a pump sprayer for stain.
Buck wild with that box cutter
Hahaha, I was thinking the same thing, all yanking on shit....

Add mineral spirits to it to help it spray better.
@@bangarang74 gonna have to show proof before it try that
My garden sprayer (tried two) didn't spray anything close to that. Mine was a GD mess. I thinking of thinning it and trying it again.
Hey Drundel,
I guess all sprayers ( or stain) aren’t created equal.
Thx for watching!
I appreciate the quick tutorial.

You are so awesome sharing on spraying the fence on a budget.
Hey Lin,
Thank you and Thx for watching!
Great summary, doing this soon but with Li-ion battery Scott's cart sprayer, too much pumping need more time for that spray+brush work. Thanks!
Hey Positive…,
Thx for watching!
Thats what i use, constant 20psi no pumping saves time and equal application rate start to finish. PUMP ZERO
great idea iv been thinking of doing this and saw your video! super helpful!
Hey Yummy,
Glad you liked it! Thx for watching.
Thank you. Great advice
Hey David..,
Thanks much and thx for watching!
Well done. Definitely helped
good vid buddy! thx
Hey Buddey,
Thx for watching!
How do you clean the sprayer when you are done?
If the stain is water based, run water through it. If it is oil based, run mineral spirits through it.
How new of fence required? I have fence that was installed about 1.5 months ago. Anything I need to do to prep it for the stain?
You're fine if it's new. If it's more than a year old I'd pressure wash it first then let it sit a couple of days to dry out then stain it.
Great video! Are you able to clean out the sprayer thoroughly and use it for gardening purposes afterwards?
Hey Shyrai,
No! I keep that sprayer only for staining. Since staining is done every year or so, it will get good use.
Thx for watching.
Cutie 🙂
Great help!!!! Thanks.
Can you use oil base or waterborne stains in the sprayer that would be helpful
Hey KC
Hmmm. Probably depends how many “solids are mixed in for color. Seems doable.

Or just add mineral spirits until it's thins out enough for the nozzle.
Big fan of Jim Jordan! Love the work you do in congress and on fences!
Jim Jordan the politician would just open his mouth and what comes out his mouth would stain it I'm sure, but then that smell...

I guess you could try that. Semi transparent is thicker by design -closer to paint. Might need a larger nozzle. Thx for watching.
Be careful with that utility knife!

Hey Low,
Nice! thx for watching !
Is this oil based stain? Semi-transparent??
Hey Fred,
Semi-transparent. I had to keep it shaken to stop the solids from settling.
Thx for watching!
what kind of wood did you use on your fence?
Hey Kevin,
The fence is 1x6 cedar with cedar tone treated posts.
Thx for watching!
How long did it take you to do those five sections time wise?
Hey Don,
To stain - it went pretty fast. With the sprayer and final brushing 60 min I’d guess.
Thx for watching!
Will this paint fall on the neighbors home if house is near ?
Could happen. Watch out for wind. Better to hang up some plastic to be safe!
That sprayer looked like it was spitting a bit. I have a wider angle sprayer tip that'll do my job.
Does it matter if it's water or oil based??
Hey B,
Oil clean-up is no fun. But if I had to guess, oil would hold up better.
Thx for watching!
How much stain total did that job take?
Hey Bill,
We started with a 5 gallon bucket. Our pump sprayer wasn’t very efficient. So could of used less most likely.
Thx for watching!
Awesome.. very helpful, thanks for the reply
Great video.
Thank you!
Did you power wash the new fence before staining?
Hey Hilda,
No. It was a new fence install. But,
It is a good idea to dye so if the fence has any real age to it.
Thx for watching!
Wow🎉
Awesome video. Did you have to use some kind of paint thinner to clean out ur pump sprayer? I plan to do mine same way but might take 2 days or so

Hey Brian,
Glad to hear that. Thx for watching!
I just tried this and it kept clogging up my sprayer tip. Can you use paint thinner?
Hey Scot,
Not sure. You may want to try the stain manufacturer to see what it would do to their product.

Are those pickets?
Hey rodrick…,
Those are 1x6 cedar.

Hey smiley….,
Thx for the comment and for watching!
It’s tedious but Nothing beats a brush.
Good point… thx for watching
I’m not an expert but aren’t you supposed to stir not shake?
Hey Manuel,
I think you are right. I just took the fast way... and I’m not really worried about bubble formation on the wood.
Thx for watching!
Anyone else get anxiety with that box cutter handling? Oh man...
Heard it was better to stained seasoned wood instead of new
Hey Kritical…,
Yes. Typically it needs to be dry to accept the stain. If the stain won’t soak in the wood, it’s not yet dry.
Thx for watching!
Use the drill to stur
should have used old oil from the local gas stations(FREE) and then use a roller with a 5 foot handle
How many gallons did you use for your fence in total? I just started in my fence and used 5 gallons about 1/4 the way through my fence. Think I am doing something wrong as my fence is 1200sq feet.
