  • This is my take on the Thien Baffle design for a single bucket dust collector.
I've used this dust collector in my home workshop (small apartment) for the past 6 months, and I'm very happy with it!
It collects successfully almost all saw dust, fine particles and wood shaving, and clogged only once in this entire time.
I plan to make some improvements such as anchoring the bucket to a stable surface and making the lid more rigid.
There are many builds of this collector on the internet. I started this one as a proof of concept but it was so good that I just kept using it :)
check out J.P. Thien's web page describing this design: www.jpthien.com/cy.htm
and also his forum page for discussions and: www.jpthien.com/smf/index.php...

Absolutely, it's small and easy to set up . I used it a lot with very good results even on thick pieces. Thanks!

Nice Job! Going to try it on a larger 750 CFM dust collector. Did you notice any suction performance downgrade?

Sorry for the late reply. There wasn't any performance downgrade, but I wouldn't recommend the plastic bin anymore. It tends to collapse when the vacuum head is blocked. I'd use a metal bin instead, and I plan to rebuild it for this reason.
Also, the plastic is a little too light which throws the bucket off balance. Make sure to secure it well. Thanks for watching!

I am new to dust collection. Shouldn’t there be a separator to separate the fine dust from the large chips?

Maybe too late to respond, but you're not wrong - this is a relatively simple design and not 100% dust proof. From my experience it collects 90% and even more. I'm using a household vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter as the suction source, so dust is not an issue

doesn't the cover leak vacuum or pop out ? Does the bucket get deformed from suction ?

Excellent questions. The cover doesn't leak but the bucket actually deforms whem the vacuum is blocked. This is something I should have thought about so a metal bucket would be much better for that
