Found your channel yesterday. Now let me tell you as a 66 years old happy dilettante from Vienna/Austria: To me you are the most likeable, motivating, encouraging and unpretentious tutor on the web. Never saying more than it needs but always all of what I want to know. Thanks a lot, you wonderful hell of a young musician.
Great comment. I'm 67, played classical guitar all my life. I've often thought that if I were to play electric, I'd like to play like Gilmour. If I were going to try to play like Gilmour, I'd start with this video.
Are you kidding me? It was not only a "good" representation, it was an AWESOME one! You, Sir, are truly an inspiration, and a God-send for all of us Floyd Junkies. Thank you so much for the time and effort you take to share these videos!
Blind Jack and Poor Li Well gee,...thanks. I have to say...that he, Jake, is one of the BEST online technique instructors. He's very clear, and precise in his teaching of it. He's definitely helped ME a great deal in my playing....so I know he's GOT to be helping others acheive better technique playing Floyd leads/licks. Rock on my Floydian friend!
I'm 52 years old. Been playing since 1973. Have loved Floyd since the early days (of my life, not theirs); I play jazz and blues, but damn, now I want to abandon everything I know and start over... I've got an Epiphone Riviera, a vintage Fender ultimate chorus amp, and a 1970s Phase 90. Damn! Thanks for letting me feel like a kid again. I love it. You're the best, Jake.
I used to do a couple of covers of Pink Floyd and they are one of my favorite bands. One "pro tip" if you want to sound like Gilmour. Listen to when he isn't playing. There are a lot of rests in his playing - he doesn't necessarily string all notes together constantly which I think is partially a blues influence. The other tip is "percussiveness". He'll rake into a bend for example. Like a couple of muted strings into a full step bend. Add that to what is in this video and you'll sound a lot like Gilmour.
I often tell my students that great guitar playing is often about what you don't play as much as what you do play and David Gilmour imo is the best at that!
Another brick in the wall part 2 solo has the rake with bend. Hard to get that tone on my metal hsh Floyd Rose, my acoustic gets closer to that tone. Probably need another guitar leaning towards a tele, though obviously I have to hide it from the wife or I will get a different tone that I do not want to hear.
@@stevejames6860 I think this is true with Philosophy too obviously an aphorism is saying something, but the emptiness of meaning is balancing the meaning. Blues is constant playing, but it is about feeling, but I think Gilmour riffs are more like philosophical aphorisms.
In my opinion Gilmour needs a lot more practice to sound like Gilmour. No hate on the guy, just he needs to review the greats from the prog rock scene.
A Golden Voice for radio, a Golden Presence for Video...we are soooo grateful you do what you do Jake. I am certain you've forgotten more than many of us will learn.
When imitating the Legendary David Gilmour, one CAN NOT forget to mention the incredibly smooth and strong vibrato he has. One single note with a 1/2 to whole step slow consistent vibrato can be as tasteful as an entire vocabulary of licks.
" 90% of anyone's guitar sound is the way they play it. I could go into any music store & buy any guitar, an amp, & some pedals & sound exactly like me. There is far too much fuss made over the gear. " - David Gilmour
@Lewis Cassel I am literally the biggest Pink Floyd and David Gilmour fan ever, I've heard David say in an interview that effects and pedals are an extension of their instruments and music. I don't want you to think that I'm disrespecting him, it's quite the opposite. It is just the way he plays, using effects to express emotions.
@@saby8765 It can be a bit of both sometimes. As a guitar player, when I'm trying out different efects, sometimes I'll start playing a riff off the cuff as the sound of the effect will inspire me to do so. but then I'll switch to another effect, play the same riff and it doesn't sound as good, in fact sometimes it sound awful! But yes, I know what you mean, no amount of effects or fancy kit will make you sound good if you can't play to begin with. Sometimes I'll play the guitar clean or even play an acoustic, it really helps to tighten up your playing, somtimes effects, especially distortion, can hide a multitude of bad habits and sloppy technique
EXACTLY! I think the 3 guitarist people try to emulate the most are Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour and of course Eddie Van Halen, if anyone of them were playing their guitar with their complete rig and then handed you their guitar you're going to sound exactly like Yourself. The same thing holds true for them, you hand them your guitar with your setup and they are not going to sound like you. No matter how hard any of us try there's only one Jimi one David Gilmour and one Eddie.
Wow, I am mostly an acoustic player but always wanted to play leads. Your video taught me more in 5 minutes than in 20 years of trial and error! Shine on you crazy diamond!
Dude, this video helped me a lot. I realized that you are not *really* talking about how to "sound like Dave Gilmour" but rather how to put a couple of boundaries together for improvisation in this style. I have only been playing for 2 months and this single video unlocked an entire new realm of understanding for me. I committed the E minor scale to memory and started messing around and got exactly the sound I am looking for. Super fun! Thanks so much!
Amazing video ! In my opinion, one of the most clever videos tackling the topic. David Gilmour's magic was never about gadgets and tone, but about thoughtful blues-inspired licks and a very melodic-driven mind. I think you come very close to his style, especially his recent solo stuff ! Keep it up !
not true, gilmour was very into tone, he spent years shaping it. and hes very perfectionist about it. he used the gadgets to get the tone but wasnt super into the nerdy tech side of the gadgets for sure.
Gilmour was definitely about tone also. In 1985, he was introduced to active EMGs. He had multiple pedals including the Big Muff, delay, reverb, etc. You're crazy to think it wasn't about tone. The genre Syd Barrett created was all about trying new sounds. Gilmour picked up where Barrett left off.
Paul Booth wow I assume you must know gilmour personally then to know his ins and outs of what he did and didn’t use throughout his career!? Tell him I said hi

Seriously dude, the guitar lesson, as a guitar lesson, is great. But, man, you're good at presenting it. Of course you've got a radio announcer's voice, but on top of that, you've got a way about you that is so cool and easy. Kudos bro. Not to take anything away from the great lesson , and your skill. Just sayin, you've got the 'put me on TV quality' - whatever that means - but, you know what I mean. ;)
All his videos are very focused and are presented clearly so that no words are wasted. And yes, that voice and the guitar audio are absolutely perfect.
I'm not an English native speaker and you talk too fast but even u talking fast I can understand every single word, your voice is clearly amazing man hahhaa
you really are a good teacher. and so humble. I had a few private lessons with a friends dad who spent about 50 minutes of the hour long lesson just showing off and telling me how good he is
That double stop is AWESOME!! So many variations you can pull off with it. Used this lesson and was playing outside.... loud. The cops came and actually COMPLIMENTED my playing..... before telling me to turn down a bit. They were pretty cool if you ask me. Just an awesome lesson for Gilmore lovers and trying to sound like him.
I've seen a lot of videos on capturing the Gilmour tone, but this one is the best yet, because it captures the Gilmour "approach." I learned more in this video than from all the others I watched on this topic combined.
Great channel... I think you're the only guitar instructor that jumps right into it without the shameful self promoting in the first 2 minutes of the video. Every instructor seems to do that and then hawk everything the viewer can buy from them. Bravo for setting your ego aside.
Am self taught on an acoustic for a little over a year. My love of Pink Floyd is why i got a modest electric set up. Very much beginner steps but this is a big help. Many thanks
Gotta say man, i love your jam track series. Ive been playing forever, pretty technically sound, but always considered improvising my weakest area. Throwing on your jam tracks and just going apl over the neck in pentatonic, or whatever else you have listed, is like the funnest thing, brings me back to when i started, when i first realized i could play along to kirk hammett solos!
Very glad you're enjoying them! I can seriously noodle to jam tracks all day long, it's ridiculously fun. I try to make tracks that I think would be fun to solo over and I'll do a few more in minor/major/pentatonic before I start introducing the more "exotic" scales and progressions.
January 2022 - just seen this - ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT tutorial and what a musician - 100% pleasure to watch ( again % again ) and I rarely do this !! Well done young man.
I'm only 3/4 way through this video and I've learned a tonne. Very well explained, exactly what I'm needing as a "rythm guitarist" new to lead. Thanks 👍
When you do the E minor arpeggio with bending to reach another note I've noticed that David sometimes does these double to triple bends that sound very Ghostly but very Floyidy. I'm not sure if you know what I'm talking about but David always freaking does it in his solos and I always love it lol. You sort of did it in that part but I know on his solos he does an extra bend sometimes where he plays the original note then bends it but the third time he bends the note he digs a bit deeper as he eases the bend to the sound of the original note. I'm not sure if I'm making sense but it's one of those very niche nuanced things that are a bit hard to describe lol.
Such an accurate description in this lesson of what makes David Gilmore 👌 The notes played without accenting or bending sounds like someone just came out of guitar 101 course at a community college, and adding the accents makes you stage worthy.
Your communication is very clear, concise and well-thought out. I'm sure you are a very good teacher. Well done. Of course some haters will say that you don't quite nail it, or that Gilmour is an unattainable guitar god (which he kinda is), but these techniques are good tools for the tool kit.
This young chap is a hell of a teacher! Just love the simple way in which he lays out the theory and translates it into a useful exercise associated with great guitar playing. Furthermore, he has a pleasant voice with a fast flow, a gift of nature. He should look into working for a radio.
I’ve watched this video at least 5 times and it’s scaffolded beautifully. Gilmour is my main guitar 🎸 inspiration and I’d love to see another deep dive. Thank you for this lesson.
That lick from "Mother" is sweet as hell! Like you were sayingt, I tend to find my root on the 2nd string and blast off from there. I guess that would be in the Lydian / Phrygian modes, right? Excellent video!
Dude I beg of thee, Please please please do a part 2 of these Gilmore licks! This is the tastiest shit I've found on the net yet! Holy smoke, I just cranked up the delay and it was Pink Floyd floating out of my amp . Everyone I've played it for was blown away. The backing track is awesome and long (which is good) but it don't take long to run out of Gilmore licks. I can improvise till the end and it still sounds good but, if we had a few more Gilmore licks, I think all the stars would align and we could finally achieve world peace!! All kidding aside, your a great teacher, I've subscribed and I just became a Patron! Thanks Dude, keep um coming....I think your lessons are going to take me to the promise land.
Very good catch! I didn't want to bring up Dream Theater in a pink floyd video, but it's absolutely true that the lick you're hearing is identical to the one from Change of Seasons. I would assume Petrucci did that intentionally as a reference to Gilmour.
So many guitar teachers. ... Too slow, too complex, too boring... You have got it bang on mate. Just the right speed, amount of content and high reward for the required input. Love it mate . xxx
Hey, just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the fact that when you play, you don't resort to contortions and grimaces as I see in so many other videos.
Rewired my strat last night...strung up some Super Slinky 9's ...only had 8's, 9's, and 11's...I think the 9's were right. Combo'd with Hardwire DL-8 Delay/Looper and an Orange Crush 35RT. Amazing tone. I've been chasing that Gilmour sound all day and this lesson was just what I needed. Great video, new subscriber here. I've had guitars since I was 19, never took it seriously, just fumbled around the fret board like the guy at a party making people's ears bleed. At 46 I decided to play an hour a day and focus on certain areas and actually COMPLETE lessons. In thirty days I am amazed that I can actually play some basic leads, can use scales, my ear is improving, and I found out my pinky finger actually works!. It's all been through watching videos from people like yourself, so I have the utmost gratitude and appreciation. I'm going to look through all the different things you're offering online. Thanks, man!
What a lovely little tutorial, I love the way your not flogging snake oil stomp boxes . Kudos for taking an honest approach and focusing in on the musicality.
Hey man, totally loving your videos! I have been following pretty much all of them. In the Maj7 arp. video you commented about that section on Under a Glass Moon from Petrucci/DT, and I would like to say that if you can do any type of breakdown/lesson/anything on some more Petrucci/DT material I would be immensely grateful! I'm sure others here would appreciate it too. I think Most Petrucci solos have something good to take for you guitar playing in general because it is very often conceived with a technical approach of hitting the right notes of the right chord in the right rhythm, if that makes sense. But anyways, thanks a bunch already!
Thanks dude! I think this channel will eventually "graduate" to harder stuff like DT as I continue doing lessons. I want to be able to refer players back to earlier concepts I introduced before diving into the insane stuff. Thanks for watching!
man I really like to watching your videos you are kind, calm and experienced. that's triple things exactly I want from as a youtuber. your voice is giving me calmness and so trustable.
Excellent! My biggest problem with trying to play lead is that I can't string-bend to save my life - I'm lucky if I can bend a note up a semitone. I have a Fender Telecaster so I can't blame the guitar.
If you're not playing 9 gauge strings, try switching to them and setting up your guitar with them. They're substantially easier to bend. Bends in the middle of the guitar (near the 12th fret) are easier, so try working up your strength there on the 2nd and 3rd strings. Also try using your fingers together as a block, and have them all push together as a unit to get the string to bend. It's tough stuff, no doubt, but over time it starts becoming natural.
Mike Nash : Get yourself a cheap ass acoustic and practice on that. That's what I do. You can build your strength on an acoustic and then the electric is no problem!!!
Also just practice it over and over. play your target note, and then bend up to it again and again. Really listen to get the right pitch rather than busting it as quick as you can. Eventually you’ll just be able to throw it on.
You're the man. You make it so easy to learn the way you teach. I've been playing for years and can play with plenty of speed and skill but you always keep me pushing myself harder. Truly, thank you!
Jake, man, you do the BEST videos! You and most of the people commenting here are way over my head, skill-wise. The way that you communicate your ideas is incredibly clear, intuitive and very thorough. This video is especially meaningful, as Pink Floyd w/ Gilmour is my all-time favorite band. I'm going to give this a shot, and thank you so much for this and all of the other videos you do. TOP SHELF!
I fucking love this channel. Went to school for music. Wish i wouldve worked at a factory, and gigged/really learned the concepts on this channel (and a few others) for 5 years. Would be just as capable a musician and 50k less debt The harmony/songwriting stuff on this channel is the perfect foundation
May be nit picking but when you play the slide up to notes, you are ending with vibrato. When not sliding up you don't use any vibrato which of course make a lot of difference. Just saying
You're very right, to be honest I didn't even realize I was doing that! I should have mentioned the power of vibrato to making a single note sound more floydian.

Such an accurate description in this lesson of what makes David Gilmore 👌
The notes played without accenting or bending sounds like someone just came out of guitar 101 course at a community college, and adding the accents makes you stage worthy.
Dude I learned more in 10:27 from you ,than 2 years from my teacher
Curt Brooks you need a new teacher dude
@@zoranallen5205 hope you're teacher won't read this comment ahahah
Jake, you're a legendary teacher/Instructor!
If only you had hordes of female backup singers for that PF sound...
That's one small element.
"They love their 'aaaah's"
-one of the background singers on "dark side" in an interview
And for backstage afterward!
AND YOU RUN AND YOU RUN TO CATCH UP WITH THE SUN
Beautiful. Gilmour does a lovely rake in the wall solo too.
Do one on brian may please!
spent my entire evening playing with this. Thanks for the lesson. You're the best!
4:15 This is a very common boob...uh...pentatonic bending move, I mean. 😁
Just found your channel. Great and logical tips, thanks for sharing and the encouraging tone of the lesson. Nice Stratocaster and Music man. Cheers.
Great lesson. I saw this when you first made it and came back to it. I'm not a speedster on my guitar and LOVE playing Pink Floyd. Spot on bro.
It's like getting guitar lessons from Barak Obama
...except that it actually works!
my first impression too
Bad day..?
Predictable much?
Jimmy Crickets because his tone of voice and speech pattern is similar to obama
Very humble in your precise understanding of, wisdom and the physics of sound.
Anyone noticed the lick he's playing at 8:00 is also on the solo of A Change of Seasons? Very informative video by the way, subscribed.
Very good catch! I didn't want to bring up Dream Theater in a pink floyd video, but it's absolutely true that the lick you're hearing is identical to the one from Change of Seasons. I would assume Petrucci did that intentionally as a reference to Gilmour.
It kinda sounds like the 2 am solo from Iron Maiden too!
Hi, you mean here: ruclips.net/video/mZKrwJzGg0k/видео.htmlm17sIt's similar, but maybe you're talking about another part.
Signals Music Studio Petrucci is a pretty massive Gilmour fan so that would not surprise me!
Sounds like a transposed versiono of the last lick out of the solo from “Mother”
So many guitar teachers. ... Too slow, too complex, too boring... You have got it bang on mate. Just the right speed, amount of content and high reward for the required input. Love it mate . xxx
This will be my homework for the next week. Love it. The rest of my life begins ....
When I think of great guitarist DG always comes to mind. Love his style and will work on this. Thanks
You deserve about 500k more views man
lol thanks, i'll get there one day!
Signals Music Studio I'm sure, great work!
Hey, just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the fact that when you play, you don't resort to contortions and grimaces as I see in so many other videos.
Nice video man!
Awesome. More of exactly this please.
Damn Jake, I forgot where I was during that solo. More of this please...maybe a few on phrasing. Thank you.
Your optimism is refreshing.
9:53 _"becoming David Gilmour is a life long process"_
*Gilmour be like:* I know right?
Great job sir. I saw him in 2016 on his 5 city North American Tour (The Forum in Inglewood) and he was AMAZING.
David Gilmour has the pick of god
Pick of destiny
If David Gilmour and Ben Stiller had a man baby
bahahahahahah
Still laughing....😂
AgMissTilly 😬😬
lol dude
lmao!
What a lovely little tutorial, I love the way your not flogging snake oil stomp boxes . Kudos for taking an honest approach and focusing in on the musicality.
Did you match your shirt to the speaker? 😂 Great lesson though!
Getting details of great guitarrists is a great way to build our own way to play guitar. Thanks!
Thanks for the advice - that's great! I'll try this.
^Yep^
You're the man. You make it so easy to learn the way you teach. I've been playing for years and can play with plenty of speed and skill but you always keep me pushing myself harder. Truly, thank you!
Why am I watching this, I don't own a single instrument
Well maybe you should consider getting one xD
Did you buy an instrument yet?
did you BUY one YET?
Did you BUY one YET?
2020 global lockdowns, did you BUY one YET?
I truly enjoyed listening and inwardly digesting your lesson on DG’s licks. Excellent. Thank you. I’ll be trying it tomorrow…on my Gibson SG copy!
Who doesn't love the Comfortably Numb solo? My sister, cuz she thinks Pink Floyd sucks. One day, she will see the truth.
Or maybe he should let his sister have her own damn opinion
Rafael Silva I would if she doesn't allow me to play my songs and instead plays a bunch of pop music just to sicken me.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
Not suggesting your sister is a horse...
2whl4re She is about as loud as one.
Hayden of Everything : women are more likely to dislike good music. I wonder why.
Dude your channel is like a Crazy Diamond.. Shine on, You
Should've seen this coming after that pink floyd jam track
Gilmour's guitar solos are always beautiful and impressive. This is why there are many Pink Floyd's guitar solo covers on youtube.
Forget David Gilmore. I wanna learn to play like you!
TOP SHELF!
1:34 i think he just made the halo theme lol
I fucking love this channel.
Went to school for music. Wish i wouldve worked at a factory, and gigged/really learned the concepts on this channel (and a few others) for 5 years. Would be just as capable a musician and 50k less debt
The harmony/songwriting stuff on this channel is the perfect foundation
May be nit picking but when you play the slide up to notes, you are ending with vibrato. When not sliding up you don't use any vibrato which of course make a lot of difference. Just saying
You're very right, to be honest I didn't even realize I was doing that! I should have mentioned the power of vibrato to making a single note sound more floydian.
Great video sir. David Gilmour is my all time favorite guitarist and I can’t wait to try the techniques you showed. Thanks for posting
Great video. These are some of the best guitar videos on the youtubes. I also think you might be Obama's secret son
