I made an iPad app that does this but you can change keys, play the chords and see the seventh variants as well. Probably shouldn't advertise here without consent from Jake so I won't, maybe you can find it on your own if you look for it.

I played guitar for over 15 years, and did my best to learn by ear. I got so good at one point I was able to transcribe solos from dimebag Darrell randy Rhodes by ear. But I could never tell you much about music theory, modal interchange or anything like that. I always had my own theories about how things worked, and this video really just blew me away. How did I never venture out? Learn this stuff at a younger age? I always thought music theory was too expensive growing up or that everything that I wanted to learn would eventually come to me either through practicing or watching old guitar tutorials on how to play.

Jake, thanks. You explained something i thought i knew, but didn't. It's like I now know how to get where I want to be: hearing my way through changes, etc. and hearing the finer points which to the educated ear cannot be faked. The way you take a small line through the chords is the most valid way to learn how to play through changes simply because you have to. This helped me. I know all the theory but proving its efficacy is another story. There are levels of understanding the modes. Most people have a generalized understanding but cant apply the theory live in unfamiliar territory simply by ear. This is actually the best training technique because the player proves their ability live and is limitless in possibility/creativity.

Seems like Lydian to Locrian could work very well since they both have the tritone above the root and the shift from major to diminished in the root chords is also pretty tasty. That flat 2nd in Locrian is also always fun.
On the other hand, playing in Dorian #11 instead of Locrian over the diminished chord also sounds super cool.

Bending through the change is something I love to hear in Billy Corgans playing, it really gives it that interesting feel that totally grabs your attention during a solo even if you’re not necessarily listening to a songs solo it’s definitely something that says to you “hey I’m playing between chords right now and you’re going to listen to me” it has that same euphoric effect that drawn out unison bends have in my opinion. I´m a huge fan of Joe Satriani, he is my reference on modes, but I gotta say, you just unraveled the secret for his unique sound. I watched thousands of video lessons about modes over the years, none of them sounded as good as Satch. You made it and I´m not saying you´re copying him, I´m saying you made it sound as good as he does. Thanks for the awesome lesson.

Jake, I think you're the best guitar teacher of all time! (And I taught guitar and bass for a number of years.)
You teach musical wisdom in addition to the theory. Your explanations are beautifully simple and to the point.
Your knowledge of scales is awesome. The videos are creative and your sense of humor makes it all perfect!
    Thank you, from guitarists everywhere!

This reminds me of what I call the Radiohead chord change (I'm aware they aren't the only band to use it but it's literally everywhere in their discography). Where you either change the "gender" of the chord. Example: in Creep the last 2 chords are both C but it changes from C major to C minor. Or when you start with a minor chord and resolve down one semi tone but with a major chord.

This is one of the best lessons I've heard on modes, and I've studied guitar with multiple teachers over almost a decade. You have a way of making the subject feel approachable and possible, even though it can really get quite complex.
Many teachers I had back in the day, it seemed to me, were really more just flexing to their student 'audience' than really wanting them to really learn this stuff in a usable, intuitive way.
Awesome video! I still find it amazing that you can find this quality of teaching for free on youtube now. Back in my guitar days we had show-off guitarist dvds and one-on-one classes... You could really only get as good as you could find a good teacher (I went through so many)
    Cheers

This is probably one of my favorite guitar lessons ever. I love how he plays examples of the concept he just brilliantly explained, but doesn’t do much vibrato, instead he plays all sorts of techniques, easier to understand but still soulful. Really nice.

You frequently make me smile. There's just so much emotion in what you play, and I especially noticed it in this video. At the one part, the simple drum pattern lined up so nicely with your example, and it just felt like it should've been in a song. It makes me feel like I would really enjoy being the drummer in your band if you would ever write solos that you could play the same way every time, even though I feel like you're a big fan of improv. You should definitely write more full-length songs that we can buy.
