I was lucky to have had contact with a professional makeup artist in NYC who gave me this advice before I started working with clients. In all of the makeup books I have read, no where has there been information stating makeup should be disinfected, or how. Thank you for sharing this exceptional advice.

And 10 years later you still teaching people how to clean their makeup, thank you so much...i just did this with all of my eyeshadow palettes, didn't find a 90% one but a 70% one.

Another tip I highly recommend, with a napkin wipe the makeup first, take off the excess oils on the makeup, then spray with the alcohol.

Thank you for showing this. I wanted a way to disinfect my makeup but was afraid that any method would ruin the products and I'm frugal with a lot of products and can toss them and replace, no big deal. Its those outrageously expensive ones, the investment ones I can barely afford to begin with that I needed a way to disinfect. Thank you so very much for actually showing this doesn't destroy the products.

With lipliners and eyeliners you should also use a sharpener to take a full layer off otherwise it is not safe. Another thing is sterilising as spraying with alcohol is not going to kill viruses, fungi etc. That is why you rather dish out everything you can onto a mixing palette and use disposable items such as mascara wands, sponges and lip product applicators.
I would walk out as a client if the MUA wasn't disinfecting or working with sterile tools.

Noemi Keddle alcohol 91% does kill bacteria and viruses by denaturing the protein or by disrupting the cell wall. The virus or bacteria is less stable outside the body. Look it up if you are unsure.

You’re right about cream products. However alcohol kills bacteria and fungi and other things don’t thrive as much in a dry powder environment and it is standard to be able to spray your palettes with ONLY 70% alcohol bc any higher and it doesn’t disinfect

Virginia Owensby 90% doesn’t have enough time to kill bacteria and other illnesses here’s to CDC telling us 70% is necessary bc any higher and it evaporates and cant properly disinfect only clean.

I am so glad to see you do this. I'm a cosmetologist and am highly concerned with sanitation. Years ago I did make-up, and am getting back into doing it, this time for a tv show, after years of doing just hair. I've had make-up artists come into the salon to do weddings and some of them had horrific hygiene habits.
I use Cinema Secrets Brush Cleaner on my tools, and 99% isopropyl alcohol on my make-up. I order it through the local drugstore.
    Thanks again and blessings!

+ Wayne Goss THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!!! A lot of my friends do not believe me, when I say it's very important to disinfect your makeup, they use dirty brushes or sponges for months on end, don't even bother to see whether there is an expiration date on the product, and wonder why their eyes get all red and itchy when they use mascara's that (I kid you not) are sometimes more than a year old, interchange their makeup, and complain when I don't want to lend them my lipstick or eyeshadow palette. So, again, thank you, you're a Godsend. I knew that already but this is the first time I see one of your "old" vids. By the way, you look so much more handsome now, not that you didn't then, but now you're so...mature and "manly, sexy"...you make me wish I was a guy...I'd take my chances for sure ! xo's 💝

My niece is like that. I've given her instructions for washing her brushes with dish soap (to disinfect), a device to hang her brushes upside down to dry, and a thorough explanation as to why she needs to be disinfecting her makeup and brushes. I've also given her 70% rubbing alcohol and shown her how to disinfect with it. I always spray my makeup with alcohol before sharing it with her, and I've explained to her that certain products cannot be disinfected (liquid products, mascara, etc.), but it goes in one ear and out the other. I end up disinfecting her makeup for her lol

I can vouch for this technique. When I was going to school for Cosmetology, we sprayed our powder products down with rubbing alcohol between clients. As Wayne stated, with liquid & cream products, we'd use a clean, beauty spatula to take product, place it on a clean palette. 😀

bookerdog1234 it's a good idea to do it with your own makeup because a build up of oil ruins eyeshadows. You can just wipe the surface of your pressed powder products after using them, rather than using alcohol spray because the idea is just to get rid of the layer of oil so that it doesn't permeate the eyeshadow. I never used to but as I'm building a makeup kit atm for professional usage I spray my products with 100% isopropyl alcohol (lower percentages contain water which can rust or ruin products, especially tins that are suitable for magnet palettes) and it dries really quickly! I also use spray alcohol on lipsticks if I want to use it from the tube
